The labor is going to depend alot on where you live, here in socal labor is cheap so if you shop around you can get the job done inc. parts/labor for around $700-$900. Cleveland I guess $1000-$1200 would be fair if done by an independent shop using good parts etc. Job should included the whole shebangebang (belts, water pump, tensioners etc.) and yes service position for alternator replacement. GL and thanks for your comment.

No video but you need to remove bumper cover, put lock carrier in service position, remove serpentine belt and from there removing the alternator is easy. I think two bots hold it in place and you need to disconnect the wires that go to it as well. GL

Great videos!! I've done that a couple of times on my Passat so enjoyed vicariously reliving it through your videos. Reading the comments: with the locking bar it's impossible to be a tooth off. The camshaft gears rotating on the camshafts also allow you to get exact timing, not limited to half a tooth as with some setups like the VW L4s

Sorry I dont understand what you are explaining, I assume your car has performance issues between 1600-2000rpms and you dont think it has to do with timing or the ABS, well its hard for me to diagnose it like this but if I had to give you any advice, it would be to check all vacuum lines, there are alot of them on these engines and are known for going bad. Good luck

@myRatchets10 жыл бұрын
I didnt use the crankshaft holder, the crankshaft takes some force to move so you are good if you are careful and follow my directions exactly in the video. Just check that it hasnt moved after you put on the tbelt. If you want to use the holding tool, it goes in the left side of the block, you'll need to remove a plastic cover thats in there with one bolt to screw in the holder in its place. GL

Hey did any 2.8/2.7 engines ever make weird sounds when turning the engine? I replaced the belt, turned the engine to make sure it's all good. My marks and cam bar lines up good, but when a compression stroke feels like it's about to start, I hear a weird noise at the top end. I don't hear anything when it gets to the end of the compression so it doesn't sound/feel like a valve is getting hit. It's a super high mile engine so it could just be from age or something, I just wanted to be sure before I crank it. It doesn't sound like a valve hitting something, it's more like a lose metal sound, or the valve flying up real fast.

Hello friend, I have a Passat 2.8, year 99, and I have had some problems in between 1.600rpm spins at 2,000 rpm, has spent several scanners in exchange and motor, I have a doubt be the problem in the ABS or the DOT passat. DOT POINT OR here in Brazil is known when the engine is delayed or ahead. The car starts to take a tripidação, what can be? the ignition switched todo.Desculpe my English.
@Unidente025 жыл бұрын
I've done two or three timing belt replacements on Volvos with the B230FT engine, so I understand the basic procedure. There is one special tool that is used there to hold the crankshaft in place to remove the harmonic balancer. It's a bit scary if you've never done something like that (I am a do it yourself mechanic). I have a 2005 V6 Passat, and I must admit it is intimidating to think about replacing the belt, thermostat, and water pump on it, but I would not look forward to having to pay a dealership about $1,000 to do that. Is that price about correct? My experience is that a repair job that takes a trained and experienced mechanic 15 minutes to do can cost the unwitting customer one or two hours of labor, so the 'scare factor' on this job would be enough for a dishonest shop to inflate the labor time to five or six hours, maybe even 8. All that notwithstanding, thank you so much for posting these videos. They are clear and concise. I also appreciate your providing the appropriate tightening torques, which can make the difference between leaking water pump or thermostat gaskets or stripped fasteners.
@IH682D10 жыл бұрын
I have a Passat with the same engine and it has a coolant leaking from the front of the engine. Is there. Good change its the water pump? Only leaks when it runs and coolant drips onto the crank pulley and down onto the oil pan...
@myRatchets10 жыл бұрын
Probably, but it could also be from the thermostat housing and there is a coolant pipe there too if I remember correctly. Going to have to take off the covers and take a look..you dont want coolant getting on your timing belt so the sooner the better. GL

First I would replace spark plugs(make sure there is no oil in spark plug chamber) and Wires. Just to eliminate it. Then Clear the codes with VAG tool. If misfire comes up, do the TB again with proper tools.

I'm going to post a question, but I anticipate no answer, because others have asked questions of their own 4, and even 7 years ago, with no answers. Anyway, isn't it possible to replace the timing belt without using that $100 "tool" straight steel bar? My thinking is that if the camshaft tooth pulleys remain lined up (with previously marked reference marks) and the crankshaft is also lined up properly, all parts of the motor are lined appropriately.

I have an Audi 98 A4 2.8 and the heater is blowing cold air. The antifreeze is not going to the heater core. What do you think is the problem? A friend told me it might be the heater control valve and I cant find it on my car. Do you really think it's that?
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
I would bleed the cooling system and make sure all the air is out, these engines are pretty hard to bleed. If that doesnt work find the two hoses going into the fire wall to your heater core they should be about the same temp, if not there might be a blockage issue with your heater core. I am not sure where the heater control valve is either but if I had to take a guess I would say you probably have air in the system. GL
@melgaspar628111 жыл бұрын
the heater core is fine, i don't have water going into it. i took the hoses off and the antifreeze is not circulating through to the heater core. do you think the cooling system has air? what is the best way to bleed it? If you dont think that is the problem, then what do you think it is? water pump or thermostat?

Dear R&W - Need help. After daughter drove 2004 2.8L Passat to work, we noticed puddle of coolant on driveway. She put 50 mi on car during day with multiple ins and outs. No temperature lights or issues while driving. Took it to gen'l mechanic who found pinholes in coolant pipes under intake manifold & replaced with OEM pipes, o-rings, etc. No heat when we picked it up after repair. Took it to VW specialist, he tried bleeding, etc. Still no heat, and no coolant getting to heater core except for a trickle at 3000 rpm while car sitting stationary, then only some luke warm heat. Our first thought is that the water pump went out, but the VW guy put a new one in (with metal impeller) with the timing belt 35,000 mi. ago (133K on car), and it seems like too much of a coincidence, unless something happened as she drove it that day that damaged it or plugged something. Second thought is that gen'l mechanic mis-routed pipes, etc., but not sure that's possible, and he says he was very careful to put it all back correctly. Third thought is gen'l mechanic did something to plug it up somewhere. The temp. gauge stays at 190. We're torn as to what to look at first, All are expensive. It's 7 below this morning. Thoughts?
@myRatchets11 жыл бұрын
Sounds like air in the system to me, its very hard to get all the air out of the cooling system on these engines! There are two bleeding holes one on the heater core hose next to battery tray one on coolant pipe below the ignition if I remember correctly. If you google it you can find many good write ups online to help you or your mechanic to get all the air out. GL

great tutorials, just when checking timing marks you said crankshaft timing mark lined up just about right, this might be taken incorrectly. it has to be on the mark or within/less a half tooth, some may be a tooth out and think it is close enough. When you initially put the engine in TDC and remove the harmonic balancer you put a witness mark on the pulley- block then rotate 30 degrees CCW - why? Why don't you just mark the pulley-block and leave it alone?
