I figured that since pulse lasers were the cheapest starter weapon that you obviously had to upgrade to a new weapon immediately. Pulse laser remains my go-to all around weapon for most ships after thousands of hours in the game. Its more like a "baseline" weapon than a "starter" weapon.

Absolutely. Pulse Lasers are one of the if not the most reliable weapons in the game on average.

You have two tiers Mk1 and Mk2. You can upgrade very soon in the game spent the rest of the game with.

​@@WatchMysh I recall from X3 that Phased Shockwave Generators were much more reliable while also devastating, best weapons against all classes of ships, stations, groups of ships and rockets, literally everything. PSG was also consuming lots of PC memory when continuously fired, my old back in it's time PC was almost choking :). I never played X4 but think of buing it. Are the Paranid PSG still so powerful in X4 like they were in X3?

@@WatchMysh btw I have to say that I haven't seen a more annoying menu system than what these idiots put together for their game... Starting with the fact that you have to double click everything in the menu, followed by the missing 'reset to default' button... But what's more annoying than that is the fact that one can't bind mouse scroll to decelerate and accelerate at the same time along with not being able to bind left mouse button to anything, because the game thinks that I'm clicking something in the menu instead of registering it.

Excellent video! Picked up this game a little while ago. Played the tutorials, but I don't recall the part about making money from missions. Very, very brief introduction into salvage and mining, but that was it. I remember being told how to surf through the menus, all the while rebinding controls for my controller. I really want to enjoy this game, so I'm taking it slowly, and learning what I can first before jumping headlong into disaster. My fear for that came from the frustratingly brutal Elite: Dangerous learning curve...

I wish space games would use a wheel menu instead of having tons of controls. So instead of pressing shift+ x, y or z, just hold 1 button and select what you want to do. It could save the player from memorizing tons of keys. And I'm talking about using this as an alternate option, not something that is forced. Great tutorial, very helpful.

I hope they update the background simulation a bit to feel more lived in, like being able to comm random vessels for unmarked missions or just people talking about lore or current events in the universe, use an AI voice program to make it cheap and saturate the world with many things to talk about with random npcs/ learn about individual npcs and potentially make friends with pilots that could be persuaded to join your faction to add to the experience!

Not that there are mods to address everything you mentioned here but if you haven't there are a good deal of mods that massively change the sandbox. I play with dynamic relations and VRO for example and that has wars starting and ending all the time given who trades with who, who attacks who, who takes what area of space, etc so its constantly adapting and changing depending on current events much like real life politics. VRO massively changes mechanics and REALLY (IMO) gives life to combat. Added ships, tons of weapons, complete revamp of damage, shields, hull, flight dynamics, etc. Base game is fun, sure but to really enjoy x4 long term mods will go a long way. (Also DLCs if you haven't gotten those too ofc)

@@dontblink9445 i still need the boron expansion, and yeah i use pretty much the same mods, i just wish they would implement a way to mod more than one single ship at a time (talking about boosting the stats of ships ingame) kinda like how you can save presets of loadouts for ships i wish there was a way to save presets for modded weapons/shields/ etc even if the stats vary id like to have that little extra edge to my ships but u have to micro everything in the shipyard which is annoying

Some advice about the rebinding of keys. 1) Show the Options so we know where to look for them. And 2) Use the game's names. Example Throttle to Zero doesn't exist it is Stop Engines. Other than that, it is a great video.

@@WatchMysh Will check the sticky notes. Some searches will not show up, like I tried Mouse look, didn't show up, but Camera Mouse Look did, so I think it is a bit sensitive to words. Mouse also showed Camera Mouse Look. (I also put Fire Primary Weapons at Cursor as R, and Fire Secondary Weapons as G just more comfortable for me)

A great beginners course. Helps on returning to the game too. Only one caveat... left handed players do not all use wsad. Personally i have to map all controls with my left hand using the numeric keypad. Up down left right is mapped to numbers 4,8,5,6 with all other keyboard mappings bound to the left of the keyboard. This is my standard wsad.

Past two saves i've gone for Untested Explorer, It's slow going indeed but wouldn't have it any other way. =] In regards to hotkeys, i only change one, i bind the e-brake from Backspace over to the 'tilde' above the 'tab' key, so full throttle and brake are not opposite sides of the keyboard.

I figure out some things by myself with next to zero guidance when I started yesterday, but couldn't find missions, and didn't know the docking computer was *actually* good (I come from Elite Dangerous where it's just slow and not worth the space in your ship). @@metalsynkk Weird. I always see them. Another guy wrote a comment here about the same issue and he solved it by removing some filters. Maybe check your map filter settings? Perhaps the problem lies there :) Also check the mission offers list on the left. All missions pop up there, too.

@@WatchMysh They just took a while to spawn it seems. Did a few more loops and kept a good eye on the mission offers, and I got plenty over time. Eventually thought I'd be good enough to do one of those for lockboxes in enemy territory, boy was I mistaken... got too used to being powerful in other games. Anyhows, thanks again for the video, helped out a lot! Gonna mess around some more, it's hella fun albeit sometimes still confusing.

Also only got 1 mission my entire fly thru that disappeared by the time I finished all the jump Gates. Also noticed since I use the Shift-Space fly mode, that any time I moved my mouse while on a highway it would drop me off of it, took me time to figure out to disable this while on highways, especially when alt-tabbing out of the game. The maintaining speed while in menus which is showed at the end of the video was super helpful, wish it was mentioned prior to highway jumping would have made things easier.

I played the first X game 20 years ago, thought I would give X4 a try, but I am totally overwhelmed, the UI is so complicated. I bought the Boron DLC and started as a Boron as I always loved them. But during the first mission, It took me 9 hours to find out that I had to discover a missing gate connection in Watchful Gaze. So stupid, I swear the mission did not state that. Being totally new to X4 I have spent 20 hours playing and have pretty much the same amount of money and the starting ship. I am therefore very grateful for this series, now on the next video!

3:49 You have one odd keyboard if you have that key next to left shift and if you have letter Y where the video shows. I understand some keyboard layouts are different for other countries, but I have never seen one with a Y down there. I thought they were still considered QWERTY keyboard layouts. Perhaps I am mistaken. Long story short, on an American keyboard, that key is the letter Z.

I purchased this game about a year ago and immediately requested a refund. Seemed a little rough. I watched your "Don't sleep on X4.." video and thought it was a different game so I purchased it, again. When I found out it was the same I tried to refund again.. total play time < 30 minutes total from both purchases. Apparently Steam will auto deny on a 2nd purchase regardless of time spent playing. Hi and thanks! :) X4 is more of a strategy game than a space combat sim. But you can try to get into some different styles like boom and zoom in decoupled mode with splil mk4 engines.

7 hours in, and I had a helluva time finding any missions. I found a few I could do, but some were utter BS that destroyed my ship the moment I get near. If you get a mission that says to destroy a mine, don't use auto pilot, fly in and drop out a few kilometers away, then slowly approach until the ?'s turn into something legible for you to target. I also didn't like the fact, that there is no story to follow, it just plops you in a station expecting you to know WTF to do lol. Doing the tutorials and this video helped. Once I started scouting around, 2 enemy ships caught up with me, even though I was in travel mode, and destroyed my ship. Time to quit for the day lol.

Happiness is building your first Asgard and planting it (with an Osaka support squadron) at the incoming gate from a Xen sector to watch it eat K's all day long... then start a scrap business and farm those annoying ai's for profit. As for key binding... I bind the easy to use buttons for combat where speed is needed. I have that side key set to "match target speed" rather than zero. I found that very handy in a fight since the new enemy attack patterns have a lot of speed changes. T for get closest target and R is set to fire primary because the mouse wheel is not great for pressing. Key with X4 if you're a noob is to get in and start playing, avoid combat for a while because you can die fast early on and build some piloting and maneuvering skills either through exploration (if you have a fast ship) or mining/trading. Follow the mission line for your start for a while to give you some goals... and learn the complex UI. Once you know you're way around the UI you'll be ready to start tackling more complex activities.

Ok clearly the Xenon are monitoring youtube... I post about farming Xenon and they turn around and send an I, 6 K's and about a million S's and M's against that gate fleet. I'd not lost a L yet but lost 4 Behemoths before I realized they were attacking and teleported into the Asgard to use the main guns on them. (for some reason the AI captains don't use the main guns... very odd).

This is a great summary of basic controls! I started with the Terran cadet because I wanted to start out from Sol. Now I kinda want to do that exploration mission but need to finish all the Terran assignments first which is... Meh. There are markers for missions on your map. I don't have these. I only see missions on the list. "Others" filter is switched on, otherwise I don't have a clue why I don't see them.

Terran Cadet is a great game start if you want more guidance. Can't help you with the markers, though. Didn't even know you could turn them off.

I _did_ fumble the filters and marked the wrong one. :D So far I can do what I want with the Cadet start, but I can't join that exploration mission, and that's really meh for me. We'll see. I really hope I don't have to fight through the entirety of Terran combat missions. Unfortunately the mission just says "Finish Terran assigments first" and I have no idea what that means. The whole terran campaign? Please no. :D EDIT: I just learned that "finishing Terran assignments" is just rescuing the Boron scientist from the Escape Plan mission. :D

Nice tutorial. I just got the game and all the DLCs yesterday in a discounted bundle and did all the basic in game tutorials and I'm planning on using this to see how well I've learned from your tutorial series. I'm curious, my thumb button was "fire secondary" what do you set to fire secondary as a replacement? (maybe you don't do much fighting, but I assume later on I'll need it). I don't recall that ever being outlined later on in any of the other videos. Oh and one content creator to another, chapters are your friend. This video needs some. It'll help your search engine optimization and you'll get pushed to more people from google searches. Also it'll help your searches if you add your title 3 times in other word forms in the description, along with a playlist and full description of what the videos are. The more words google has to use, the more the crawlers will pickup your videos and push them to people FIRST. Yours was not first in any of my searches but it SHOULD be. These are all great videos. Much better than the other long form "lets play" videos I got originally that confused me more.

I use to play X4 built dozens of space stations a large fleet then they updated (massive expansion) it broke the saves no longer functional, lost everything ... EVERYTHING, I couldn't restart since then been years and two or 3 massive expansions released everytime I get hyped I remember all the glory that is lost

This was a really solid video on flight. I remember when I played a while ago, after I got flight and basics down, I had a rough time with Automated mining/selling you should definately do a tutorial on that if you get around to it. There's really so many things to touch on in this game, but like 3 or 4 more videos like this with the basics I think will make the game hella more enjoyable for most people trying to get into it.

@@WatchMysh Going to check this video out soon, still working my way thru the first video. Didn't get any missions and too broke to buy that flight computer, also replied with editing in about not changing speeds prior to using jump gates would be useful, as well as mentioning to disable any kind of mouse flight while using the highway like shift-space and shift-N I think are the commands. Probably would be helpful going into basics of setting up primary and secondary fire, as I think I might have accidently unbound one rebinding my keys to what you suggested, which makes flight INSANELY easier then the default so thanks for that! Also you jump right into missions but you zoomed in and didn't show us how to get there. I found it under the logbook off the main menu, as well as where you were looking, which I think is off the main map (M) key. This would also be helpful to mention, might want to add to lookout for missions and maybe do some while we are flying around so they don't disappear and we can make some money =)
