Fun game idea, an alternate timeline were Sauron had a successor. You would be that successor, rebuilding the forces of darkness. It could use the nemesis system of Shadow of Mordor, recruiting orcs and corrupting men to your army. You would also get your own dark fortress to customize and would be able to completely customize your dark lord. It would be like a more serious version of the game Overlord, if anyone remembers that game lol.

This is where the unfinished story-plot of The New Shadow happening on the Fourth Age during Aragorn and Arwen´s son rulling time which might have been or not a stand-alone story or even the prologue of the upcoming Dagor-Dargorath plot-development as well. However Tolkien didn´t liked the whole idea at the end and thus their connections with further pre-existent material are mostly closed-by, but makes a well open-field for free-fanfiction creativity sources on its own.
@MysteriesOfWesternesse
@MysteriesOfWesternesse Жыл бұрын
He didn't connect "The New Shadow" to the Dagor Dagorath. Though it would make some sense, it would hasten the timeline to have the world end before the Age of Men would have properly started, so we do not think that Tolkien would have considered connecting them. (Though, it might be possible for the delusion of the antagonist to be to try and bring about Dagor Dagorath and have Melkor return to Arda, but we as readers would already know that this was not in Eru's plan. It would cause some mild problems with how serious we would take the threat of that antagonist, but it would indeed be an interesting story to tell, if told right)

@@MysteriesOfWesternesse yeah those ideas were amazing, so sad that Tolkien saw them as useless overall, and avoided it as making the whole Middle-Earth storyline as a kind of legendary-mythological forgotten prehistorical past for the real world history, though overall it´s very convoluted to properly match anyway, so it sound as a cheap escape clause excuse for it.

The sillmarilion is a parody of the War for heaven in the Bible of course, Morgoth is The Devil, Sauron his servant who comes over to his cause from one of the Valar, also Angels. It's interesting stuff, but it's probably unwise to read too much into mythology and start stating overarching things like Tolkein meant this or that. I suppose only he knows why he wrote things the way he did.

I always wondered if Saruman might be able to return? Morgoth is still out there in the void, so if the Valar could send Gandalf back, could Morgoth do the same to Saruman? Sauron was a lesser version of Morgoth who stepped into his place after Morgoth's fall, so it would fit thematically for Saruman to do the same. Alternatively, maybe Ungoliant could still be out there. Tolkien hinted she ate herself, but that was never confirmed, so perhaps she could emerge from the far south, at the head of an army of giant spiders

Well evil.beings as the surviving Orcs, Shelob (if the lived), the Mirkwood spiders (if Celeborn & Thranduil didn´t got rid of all of them after taking over the forest and becoming it Greenwood again), the Barrow-Wights, the keepers of Cirith Ungol fortess on Mordor (if didn´t got destroyed by the whole ground destruction within the area as both the One-Ring and Sauron himself got destroyed), some dragons at the Grey Mountains (and the Withered Heath) and of course, the NAMELESS THINGS, including the Watcher-in-the Water. So still there remain a lot of diverse evil things wisepread on Middle-Earth´s world but they might not being able to do much harm or relevance of people as in the past, as they´re mostly avoided and maybe eventually destroyed or chased away too - at least while Aragorn was on rulling-command alive they did so.

Herumor´s character on The New Shadow could be either Mouth of Sauron if he actually survived so long after the last Battle at Morannon at the defeat of his master, or a random new-character from either the East or South regions of Middle-Earth where Sauron (and Morgoth)´s influence remained eventhough there was long gone a new central leadership untill his uprising on that role. Still there seems to be indeed links about he very connected with the past and some uncanny revelations about himself but... there is where the known story actually ends.

Let's recall that the true beginning of the darkness of the First Age wasn't so much a result of Melkor & Ungoliant killing the trees & stealing the Silmaril. Those events, horrible as they were, could have recoverable. The truly great evil was the Oath of Feanor. This was an event that came out of the Noldor elves & resulted in the kinslaying(s). Arguably, this was a far greater evil than the acts of Melkor.

Maybe there was an immortal elve smith in the service of sauron as an 10th nazgul equipped with a dwarf ring of power as well as lesser rings that the elves created before the rings of power that survived. With those he might me able to withstand the time, hunted down the two blue wizzards in the south/east or corrupted them like saruman to fuel their maya powers into another ring created in mount doom with the possibility for the powerless shadow of sauron to take on a physical form using the blue wizzards as an battery so to speak. This shit would be crazy as hell.
@jonrwert

I think we get the general impression, that similar to Morgoth, Sauron had power over his forces, not just fear but a general intention that compelled them, probably much more powerful if he had the Ring. When the Ring was destroyed, Sauron's "hold" over everything, including his military forces, quickly disappeared. I don't think there would be anyone left that maintained some secret degree of Sauron's power of intention, if he had a successor it would be someone who used his legacy to start a cult of personality, to assume the title of new dark lord without any actual dark lord power. Maybe a cult leader of men or orcs would emerge later, but it would be just a "normal" conflict between groups like any in our human history. Only other option would be some Balrog hiding somewhere decides to emerge after thousands of years. You mention that. But the Balrogs never seemed to want to rule like Morgoth, they seemed to just want to serve Morgoth and than lost interest after his banishment. I don't think they were quite the same kind of evil, just soldiers, not successors.

Oh, one random fan theory I saw has to do with the mysteriously absent Blue Wizards. What if Sauron corrupted them like he had Saruman, and made them vassals far to the east? Or what if they were his prisoners, and were finally freed at the end of the Third Age? In either case maybe they could take up the mantle of dark lords, though as you say near the end of the video, Tolkien said that the era of magic was ending and the time for men to do normal men stuff was at hand, lol. So that would sort of preclude the possibility that the Blue Wizards might later get involved.

No. As an immortal he never conceived of him not being there, so would not have any though about "after" him. Is Sauron Morgoths successor? No. Morgoth as a God would not think about a time when we wasn't around and didn't have a 'successor', Sauron was just his most able servant who survived his downfall. Sauron wasn't even really Evil after the fall of Morgoth, just with time he didn't get the respect he though he deserved and thus came up with new plans for how he could be in charge. Now normally the Witch King of Angmar would be the successor as the most able henchman, but since his best servants shared in his power and with his passing the entire leadership was also wiped out. The only way there would be a successor is if someone else was able to tap into the divine power of Morgoth to have extra power, life extension and persuasion to lead the Orcs and Easterlings to gather into another grand army.

We, the followers of Sauron will bring him back to life and even greater power. For we have the blue wizards safe and asleep in a dark place so deep that no one can find it. And when the Dark Lord finds us, we will use the life force and energy of the wizards to renew our Lord ,so as to help Him to regain his strength. We have taken the life force of countless other magical beings and stored it in large crystals to aid our Lord in need. Sauron will rise again.

Morgoth could have had it all why he thought rulling arda was the best idea i dunno but i would have straight taken my bro out and then its done! And ruled it all! Tulkas wasnt around but he looses to a half elven! I mean a badass one but it just seems like he is just like sauron always destined to FAIL!

Yes. Known as Kevin Conroy The Caped Crusader. The Dark Lord his very self as is. Sadly any insane all but obsess over what could of been or what would of been. Forced to sanity once more if necessary I honestly feel that Sauron would of genuinely considered Bruce Thomas Wayne.............the only one who COULD though it would be done LITERALLY. Not killing & such as that IS insanity after all. The battle would of been diplomatic. 100% From Sauron? 50/50 like all the rest.

Why would an immortal have, want or need a successor? I seriously doubt that he ever believed that he wouldn't eventually rule Middle Earth for Eternity.

A very good point indeed, though there is a difference between a designated successor, who had to have been named as such by Sauron during his reign, and an effective successor, who assumed that role and/or title after the Dark Lord's fall. So it is in that latter sense still a valid question. 😉

@MysteriesOfWesternesse I would say that it's a very human trait to plan for all eventualities and have a named successor. My view is that Sauron would name a second in command, such as The Mouth, the Witch King if he'd survived or Khamul. Considering how untrustworthy a bunch they had the potential to be, if I was Sauron, I wouldn't have named a successor. Whether it's putting ideas into your underlings heads or showing weakness by suggesting you might fail or fall, it wouldn't have been a great move in my opinion. 😏❤️😏

Not "slay-vered". "Slah-vered". It refers to the foam from the mouth. "Slavered" should be pronounced with the exact vowel sound as "slab". It can only be determined by context. I imagined an after-Mordor where the Mouth of Sauron lived over a thousand years, and knew how to make Rings.

Yeah. Right. The gate where he went collapes. The towers collapse. Mordor fell into ruin. The army was destroyed. But the Mouth lived. You're delusional. No, you clearly expected Tolkien to mention that they went through the rubble and found his body. Geesh, if they hadn't found Cersei's body in Game of Thrones people like you would be claiming that she survived because having the Keep collapse on top of her and burned with dragon fire wasn't clear enough that she was killed.

Honestly I think we have to think on sauron like this once he made the ring he made himself mortal! More like a cat he lost his fair form in numenor with a horrible deed...He lost the ring life during his horrible deed against the last aaliance...And then same again pretty much i like to call it last aliance 2.0...Always against the free ppl! But my eyes see it once he made the ring he made himself mortal! Voldemort 2.0

IMO, The blue wizards will usher in the Dagor Dagorath. When they were together in the east, in the 2nd Age, they were strong and a formidable adversary for Sauron. But Saruman accompanied them in the 3rd age and may have ordered them to split up. One went East, one went south. Once divided, Sauron was able to conquer and corrupt them. Together, the power of 2 corrupted evil Istari wizards may possess the power to resurrect Sauron and his master, MELKOR! That's when all hell will break loose on Middle Earth - The Dagor Dagorath.

XD
