I feel like the only person that actually knows all of dxhird's mechanics. There's tons of obscure things going on under the surface. Boy can transform into his evil form mid match! You can discard and pick up your weapon manually! There are wall jumps and motherfucking CEILING jumps! There's sidestep jumps in addition to dashes and sidesteps, and the movement mechanics can chain into each other for schmoovement! The guard gauge is also consumable for powered up super attacks, some of which can only be done at low health! If you have no weapon you can catch the opponent's sword in your hands with a unique parry! There is a universal custom combo mode that changes the attacks assigned to each button, and all these attacks chain into each other! Chain into them too much and your character will taunt, sacrificing frame advantage and possibly becoming punishable! Most attacks can be feinted by pushing guard during their startup! This is true for some midstring attacks as well, which can lead to cancel infinites! You can diagonally walljump up the edges of a stage after getting ringed out in order to recover! Yes really! Game's still horrible though

I have, Ehrgeiz RPG mode is basically Rogue with ARPG combat. Go from room to room and descend the dungeon finding new gear and leveling up. Very simple but I found it fun. At the bottom (I think floor 120) is a final boss that you have to defeat twice, after you defeat it the first time your character dies and can't be ressed this time so you are obligated to continue on with the second character. Meaning if you sold off any gear that would be good for them and never bothered leveling them you're essentially starting from the top of the dungeon and doing it all again. The dungeon crawler wasn't very big at the time and roguelike wasn't even a thing so anyone that grew up with nostalgic feelings for Rogue likely found it a fun update to that formula

Evil Zone is straight up one of the most unique fighting games to ever exist. I'd kill for a remaster with online play. Edits: - According to Maximilian (I think? I probably heard this on Triple K.O.) Capcom apparently has what's essentially a nearly complete, or basically feature complete version of _Capcom Fighting Allstars_ just sitting on their drives. They just... haven't wrapped it up and released it for some reason, probably having to do with ARIKA. I hope Nakayama and the current Capcom team might do something with it, but with SF6 on the horizon, that's hilariously doubtful. - God, _Bloody Roar_ 2 and 3 are so fucking good. - Whenever I see KZbinrs or Streamers play *_Bushido Blade,_* _not one of them_ ever realizes that your character's eyes open back up if you continue after being killed. I always found that to be an extremely creepy touch that I loved about that awesome game. Every character also was able to use a particular weapon much better than the rest of the cast, another thing nobody seems to know. - _Garouden Breakblow_ is way more fun than it has any right to be. It doesn't feel like any other fighting game, but when you get the hang of it, holy shit does it hit hard. - For fuck's sakes Thor, play _Phantom Dust._

Kakuto Chojin is a game that focuses on meter, combos and neutral. Meter management is key for speed boosting to create combos, and setting up advanced techniques, the movelists are quite large for most of the cast, and the characters who have small movelists are quite strong as well. The game also has a dodge mechanic that gives the ability to dodge any attack by tapping forward at the right time. Movement is also very good as it's 360 movement that can be canceled into dashes, and sidestepping to allow for a more free movement system, this is useful for the four player modes like capture the crown, and battle royale which is basically like playing The Bouncer but with mechanics that are closer to a fighting game. The Kakuto/Chojin movesets is one of the main gimmicks of the game and it's hit or miss when it comes to providing two movesets for 13 characters. Some characters like Vittoria, Rena, and Daeva have different movelists when picking Kakuto, or Chojin, whereas others like J.D Stone, Asad, and Vegard are better off with the Chojin moveset since it's the same moveset but better as it offers more moves, and combo potential. Speaking of combo potential Kakuto Chojin has some pretty crazy high damaging combos as well with the use of speed boosting that can be done with any action to create new combos. It's just a shame that Kakuto Chojin would be the last DreamFactory fighting game outside of Kenju which was canceled. Because despite how rough the game is at first, it does have a pretty deep system that got overlooked back in the day, and it shows how underrated DreamFactory was as a fighting game developer.

Random person on the internet here, but i'd like to thank you for providing so much info on this game and for being so passionate about it to do so, to look so in-depth and analyze everything about this game. It's a strange one that I have never played, but it has stuck in my mind -in no small part thanks to the soundtrack- and regardless of how unlikely it may be, just like my own favourite game with a fighter-like combat system by name of Kya: Dark Lineage, i hope that Kakuto Chojin will one day get a second chanceand be able to live up to all the potential it still carries. Such as further fleshing out what semblance of a story there is into an *actual* story, for one. But also the individual characters, locations, lore... I don't know, my visions of what would be good for a second chance for Kakuto Chojin might be different from yours-- but if it ever *does* get a second wind, I simply hope it will be good and make a more positive and wide-spread name for itself. Thank you again for all your efforts and passion on sharing knowledge and details on Kakuto Chojin. Such love and dedication to this day is inspiring to see. Whatever those words may mean from a stranger on the internet, i will leave up to you. But regardless, i wish you a good new week, and take care.

@@jurtheorc8117 I mean at that point it's basically a pipe dream considering Microsoft axed the game back then because they wanted to forget about the game due to the bad reviews, and controversy with Asad's theme. The story of the game is a standard fighting game plot of a criminal organization called the Maladinia who controls Drasuka the city Kakuto Chojin takes place in, and hosts an annual fighting tournament to find the strongest fighters. Nothing special, the only character that has a interesting backstory is Vegard the masked Tae Kwon Do fighter who was isolated in his life because his parents tried to put him into rigorous training to face a great evil told by a fortune teller, he became suicidal due to him feeling like he's cursed, and lost. He stole an iron mask from his father art collection that represents a confused, and violent soul, and begin wandering around aimlessly to search his true self. As for improving the game basically add more content to the game. Have options for the 4 player modes, as well as online since it was something the designer regretted not putting in the game, remove the Kakuto/Chojin gimmick, add a quest mode into the game similar to Tobal, and add Tobal 2's grappling system into the game. However this idea can also apply to a new DreamFactory fighting game but they stopped making fighting games nowadays, and just make animations.

Man I miss clickety buttons on controllers. Everything just feels mushy now, like pressing those soft remote control buttons all printed on one big soft rubber panel. Neo Geo Pocket Color was my all time favorite. You can feel the clicks in the thumb stick and count the eight directions as you make a circle.

Not gonna lie, I was prepared for this video to be about an actually mysterious late 90s/early 2000s-ish 3D fighter for PS1 that seemingly never got released for reasons unknown, complete with no known developers nor a known publisher. Dang it, now I want a 2 hour video on video games with no known developers or publishers! Also, LucasArts decided to make their own fighting game which is why Star Gladiator is called that. Unfortunately, the game LucasArts made, Masters of Teras Kasi, became so bad that it ended up becoming the ONLY Star Wars fighting game outside of the one featured on one of the Star Wars plug-n-plays.

I think you missed "Tech Romancer" for the Dreamcast section. It is a fighting game love letter to all giant robot anime, and I will never stop singing it's name where applicable! It came out about the same time as rival schools, and was a bit stiff, but it had heart, was fun, and I love fighting in giant robots! There is no depth after it's presentation, but again, it's fun, and worth a play. (More worthly then most of this.) On the flipside, I think you missed "War Gods" as well. WG had to be Midway's attempt to bring MK into 3D, since it had the same MK controls mapped to 3D character... whom were all dieties. (Almost a callout to Raiden's first ending) I mention WG for the history... the game itself was janky trash, barely controllable, unbalanced garbage that has input lag to rival DBZ real bout. War Gods exisits, but Tech Romancer F****!

@@Gatorade69 no forreal, MatthewMatosis called it, if these games are going to lean further into “hahah gotcha” dodge and punish combat, they could at least get a little more interesting mechanically. @@phirmth Hmm, I own the first Nioh on PS Plus, maybe I should play it. I have heard from some people that they think Nioh is better than Dark Souls. While I have played a couple Dark Souls titles I'm just not a fan... I don't have the time to get good, the combat consists of whittling down health/dodging and everything punishes you and it really wears ya down. They just aren't for me, I would love to see them bring back something like Armored Core.
@phirmth
@phirmth Жыл бұрын
@@Gatorade69 Nioh has more of a character action influence that allows for you to break the game in different ways, but it IS very tough, arguably harder/more demanding than From’s stuff. 1 suffers from a lack of enemy variety, but jumping directly into 2 is gonna be an even sharper learning curve. Just be prepared to die a LOT, you’re still doing a lot of dodging and whittling down enemy health, but you have far more offensive options and can create larger openings for yourself to inflict burst damage in.

One of the greatest understated joys in life is going through weird/forgotten/obscure shit like this video is full of. Every so often I look back on those days in high school (the mid to late PSone era) where friends and I would hit up the bargain bin at various stores and come home with like a dozen games no one had ever seriously considered purchasing like Evil Zone. We would then spend a weekend just dicking around with all the various titles and developing a ton of in jokes.

Bloody Roar was hardly obscure though, it wasn't the big three with Namco, Capcom and whoever did MK, but hit pretty close. Dunno why the series fizzled out, but I know that PS2 installments didn't get many cool new animals, it kinda peaked at 2.

I had Ehrgeiz back in the day. Barely played the regular fighting mode, other than playing as the Final Fantasy characters, because you had to, but I did play a ton of the RPG mode. The game was based around alternating between two characters, dungeon diving, coming back to the town, swapping characters and repeating. Except the game never told you that you were supposed to use both characters equally. There was no penalty for overusing a character, so you'd focus on one and keep progressing further into the game. All good fun. Until. Turns out there was a very good reason to use both characters: at some point in one of the final floors of the dungeon, you'll open a chest and an explosion will kill the character. Not knock them out, not send them back to the town, but kill them stone dead. You're then supposed to use the other character to mount a rescue mission and revive them using some special Materia (the Materia from FF7 were how you used spells, skills, etc). I learned this the hard way, after having put about 30-40 hours into the RPG mode. I sat there, with my other character sitting at level 3, thought, nope, fuck this, and never touched the game again. To this day, it's still one of the most impressive/sadistic dick moves a game has ever pulled on me.

Always the same wasn't it?! I remember my playthrough of Code Veronica being ruined by _pre-empting_ a character change and putting all of my weapons into the storage chest for them to be used on the last boss. Nope. Just a ruined save file of being outside the last boss fight and severely underequipped.

No joke i'm kinda surprized you didn't poke soul edge/blade since some of it's mechanics that didn't carry over into soul calibur would probally interest you,especially when the game had 2 different soundtracks that you would probally have a good time poking at,but I still enjoyed seeing the many niche games I recognized as well as ones based on series I was aware of in other forms appear in this. I always enjoy your unique take on stuffs as a whole and how much fun and honest truth ya give while also giving this great laid back vibe to your videos that are just nice to chill with as you just enjoy these games even if they have some bads you can really find goods within their details,styles,or music or gameplay that not many would notice or cover.

Three. Soul Blade has three soundtracks, Arcade, Arranged and PlayStation. Granted, Arranged was just remixes of Arcade OST but still... that's a LOT. Funnily, the main mechanic that was later cut in Soul Calibur, easy button mash combos, returned in SoulCalibur VI, I mean things like pressing triangle or square on its own multiple times. Also, the rage pre-recorded combos on shoulder button, those are kinda back in a clashing minigame. Soul Edge aged better than first Tekken, it's faster and has proper sidesteps... I still miss Rock's moveset in later games tho.

I have... TO AGREE WITH YOU. Toshinden is one of the Best Weapons Fighters that's not perfect. I like how you showed mechanics, combos, weapons styles, controls and options. It's why they made multiple games plus a terrible anime. But the rest of those "other" 3D games you "featured" didn't get two or three... an anime? I guess they were consider gaming polygon vomit. Tekken & others are Punch and Kick gameplay for the most part-simple. Toshinden is a weapon fighter BEFORE soul edge/soul caliber and these games have different system of combos -limited, skill -not button mashy (Tekken is) and execution -timing plus movement. Samurai Shodown, Plasma Sword, Soul Calibur, Guilty Gear and Star Gladiator mostly have the big combos in supers and "some" special moves vs Punch & Kick AKA regular fighters. Toshinden 1 and 3, I feel are way more interesting with TRUE sidestepping and dodging, unique special moves and powers, desperation moves, secret moves, ring outs (soul caliber stole), juggles, counters, whiffs than those others. It was also AHEAD OF IT'S TIME with auto moves to the triggers. Which means specials and supers mapped to buttons! That means if you couldn't execute certain moves... now you can! So now a novice can fight against a veteran only worry about properly line up his/her attacks and defend to compete. Which is why my wife can play this game very well after two months a playing... Yeah way more competitive and fighting game fun with Toshinden vs the other janky and puss oozing "some" of the games you mention. Samurai Showdown games, Toshinden games and the Plasma Sword games are the BEST weapon based fighting games! Great video!!!... you did this wearing those high heels the whole time... Whew!

I have so much love and nostalgia for Deadly Arts. I don't care that it's an awkward, 2 button 3D fighter on the N64 with a mid framerate, it has a fucking character creator and a ridiculous number of potential inputs for each character. It's fun and has tons of style. I'm STILL waiting for a modern fighting game with a good character creator that isn't Soulfuck Calibur. I will only buy so many Namco fighters mostly using the same jank-ass animations from 1998 (says someone who just re-bought soul calibur 3 yesterday) and create-a-character parts from 10 years ago. I stopped playing fighting games of a competitive nature due to anger problems but you bet your ass I would buy something like a modern day Deadly Arts or even something most-of-the-way fucked like MK Armageddon. Anyway, subbed!
