I always wrote off Tekken, I was never interested in it at all and always preferred Street Fighter. After the shit show that was SFV I decided to give Tekken 7 a go when it released, and Im blown away at how much I enjoy it. Getting the movement down is so satisfying (I have about 70 hours in the game and I'm just beginning to be able to pull off KBDs consistently in real matches) and all of the combos feel so fun to do. Never thought I'd be a Tekken fan but here I am.

Toxic Apocalypse I've put most of my hours into Lili, but I'm in a bit of a tricky situation with her. I have no problems doing her combos but I feel most things I hit are out of blind luck, and wouldn't really work if I played her at a higher level (stuff like her snake Edge, ff2 and her df3+4) whereas I picked up Dragunov recently and it seems like my playstyle is just more solid as him. I know he's top tier, and on top of that I've heard he's really idiot friendly so I'm sure that helps. Just feels off because the trickiest combos I know as Lili do damage in the early 60s, whereas Drag it seems can easily get damage in the late 60s on top of having things like wr2, d2 and df1 which are super easy to hit in the neutral game.

PaeroPwns I can't tell you much about lili other than she has a lot of unsafe moves and a smart opponent will be able to sidestep punish a lot of her stuff so you have to play her carefully, there's a video on aris' channel somewhat recent he plays a long set against a lili player who plays so well which is rare. If I played lili I'd take notes from that video. But yeah db4 ff2 are launch punishable so use sparingly or not at all

For example, spot dodging fills the same role as sidestepping, or as close as you can get in a 2d game (even the animations show this)

First time I saw a real 3D fighting game was Soul Calibur on my Dreamcast. There I noticed how the character fighting stances were not simply mirrored. Really awesome and realistic! Next one was Dead or Alive 2 where not only the characters and stages were 3D environments. They even got advantage of the stage space, throwing their opponents downside or breaking through windows or walls. At that point DOA was the first game to allow that, while Tekken 3 just used false 3D stages. That jump from 32 to 128 bits was awesome.

@3:25 Oro didn't lose any limbs. He just hide an arm to even the playing field cos he thinks he's one of the best fight ever exist. When he switches side there are a few animation frames showing him switches arm, and he also uses both arms in some of his ex-super moves.

Ah, Tekken 4, the nostalgia. Hard to believe I used to play this game almost non stop. Not gonna lie, I kinda miss the uneven terrain now. It really made the environment feel more real. Instead of maps being limited to areas you would expect to be flat, they could really expand their map choice to a bunch of unique locations. Meanwhile Pokken Tournament is weird, it switches between Arena fighter (ala: Dissidea or Naruto), and standard 2D fighter (Street Fighter, Killer instinct, etc.) for what is most of the time the main brunt of the fighting. Allowing characters to tack on damage and/or get good (or bad if the opponent plays it better) positional advantage before the 2D part sets in.

That is definitely worth considering as well. Just like how Street Fighter had proximity normals, some games actually change beyond that like Pokken and I think Dragon Ball Legends. Even the Budokai Tenkaichi games put restrictions on movement when you get close even if they aren't Pokken big.

I think the more interesting analysis would be for the Gundam Vs series as the most popular Arena Fighter in JP for 15 years now. You can say that Gundam Vs was the SF2 of the arena fighters (Though Virtual On did it first before Gundam and I would consider Virtual On to be the Good SF1 of the arena fighters). Bamco and Techno really took a lot of the mechanic from Gundam and Virtual On to make the offspring like Pokken, Dissidia and Naruto.

I'm not sure how comparable Pokken is to Gundam Vs (which doesn't just owe Virtual On but also Gotcha Force which had the same director and dev team as Gundam Vs I believe). I do think that more analysis for arena fighters is warranted though. I greatly enjoyed the Budokai Tenkaichi series which took a good deal of influence.

+thelastgogeta IIRC, each iteration of Gundam VS got different team but still maintain the core gameplay but with different style. Like GvG and Gundam vs Gundam Next Plus was actually developed by Capcom and Extreme vs series had different team compared to the current Vs. Also, the very first Gundam vs was Federation vs Zeon which preceded Gotcha Force 2 years prior to its first release.

zhaoyun255 You aren't wrong about the varying development teams but at the start it was led by Capcom and Atsushi Tomita, who were in charge of Federation vs Zeon, Gotcha Force and all Gundam Vs games prior to the PS3/PS4 installments (and their arcade counterparts) - Bandai Namco did them in house. I obviously can't credit Gotcha Force for inspiring them to make Gundam Vs completely, but I'm sure that it influenced Tomita and other staff in future games and the resemblance is striking even now. I'm sure I could itemise mechanics, modes and concepts which eventually got adopted but at least we are on the same page now.

Tekken 7 is the one that got me into Tekken big time. I think I was too young to really "get it." But also a lot of videos really helped. This made me go back and play older Tekkens and the character I think is most sorely missing from Tekken 7 that I've always liked is Lei. I'm not the only one either. He seems like a core Tekken character like Hwoarang, Eddy Gordo and Mishimas. Another character that I think should be in the game (but I haven't played him much yet) is Marduk. These archetypal fighting styles I think are what make Tekken games hype. I like the new characters but it feels a bit weird to have staples missing.

Agree. He is kind of like Steve Fox with the stance switching but more complicated (Steve has two stances, Lei has 7 not including back turn and ground forms) and with some good 50\50 mix ups plus some ground techniques like Eddy. His combos are incredibly fun when you're mixing up stances. He is a great showcase for Tekken making use of the fundamental system in a way that makes sense (because he's Jackie Chan.) It's a mystery why they didn't include him but I suspect that it has to do with fighting him. If people complain about Eddy Gordo, they would complain doubly so about Lei who auto-parries different stuff in difference stances, has a snake edge type move, likes to drop on the ground etc. People have called him a "gimmicky" character. But that's just my theory. Designing a game like T7 is probably no walk in the park and perhaps they weren't sure what direction to take him with armor moves\super age drive.

KoylTrane it way more simpler than it appears. Most of the Cast in Tekken has LESS than 100 move & even for the ones that do, MOST of those moves are just different variations of the same 5 it so strings that they have. The Other mechanics in Tekken work similarly to other fighting games.

KoylTrane I use to have the same mentality when I first picked up Tekken Tag on PS2. I got into it more cause I see others in the arcade playing and saw how much they enjoyed it. So me and my brother picked 1 character that appealed to us (I choose Baek/Lei & my brother choose Xiaoyu/Jin). We practice for hours memorizing moves and combo. I think I got better when i versed other players and getting my ass kicked and seeing their playstyle.

The reason why oro can switch his arms is because he is using a magic spell to conceal the other one when he switches sides.

Something tells me there are still new original characters to be introduced to Tekken 7. I think they gonna add legacy characters in Season 03 with more goodies for fans and the roster will probably ended up being 50 to 60 characters, because we have a lot of time until Tekken 8.

@@ashtar3876 here 6 months later, Pakistan still bans akuma from tournament and everyone agree that he got nerfed alot and is still the indisputed strongest character in the game. Akuma is the only character from the launch of the game that recieved only nerfs, and these nerfs were nothing to scoff at, and despite that, he still resides in a tier of his own, s+, marginally stronger than the top four after him (Julia, Fhak, Deviljin and Jin).

Hawkstar59 If you could tell me what qualifies as an anime fighter, I'd love to hear it. Is it strictly by having an anime-like art-syle? Because by that logic, the vast majority of fighters made in Japan are anime. Is it having complex game mechanics with crazy movement? Marvel and Skullgirls must be the most anime fighters ever then. It's a nonsense term that nobody can come up with a legitimate concrete definition for since there are exceptions abound, and only serves to segregate the so-called "anime fighters" from others when they're all 2D fighters at heart.

If I had to bring anyone in from a different 2d fighter- Sol Badguy from guilty gear. honestly I also like a bunch of the setup fighters in Blazblu like Rachel and Kokonoe that wouldnt be bad either but I dont think theyd get much hype from them

The dream of every game geek was to play & experience a fully fleshed out game/world and now we knew we were about to live that dreams, the flood gates had been opened and people were really surf-boards in hand to ride the wave.

Do not get Tekken 7. Everyone praises it, but there is shady business in their. The customization that was quite fleshed out in previous installments is a shell of its former self, and they are coming out with new customizations, but they are paid DLC. All the 2D fighters they'll be releasing are paid DLC. And! Worse of all is they allow other players with that DLC character to run amok in online play with members who do not have the DLC character. The DLC character i haven't download has come randomly unlocked in my Treasure Battlers and I am unlocking gear for a character I do not even have or installed. Beyond the fact there is no Arcade mode, it was gutted, not all the fighters have their own endings, and the Story Mode is limited to a few characters and I am certain they'll make you pay for chapters as well. No one is even talking about these features, which pisses me off, because clearly this a money scheme. I want to like Tekken 7 because I been playing Tekken since the Playstation era, when it first came out. But I barely recognize this franchise with Tekken 7. The fighting is still great, solid Tekken, but the actually content of the game is really barren. With malicious DLC.

3:18 Returning to this video, and; Since this video game out, Sagat and Oro were both released for SF5. Sagat's eyepatch was fixed because, again, it's cosmetic, and Oro's arms were retconned so that instead of being tied up, Oro now just has a pet turtle that he holds onto at all times. Funny how fate works...

First off, it makes me smile to hear Tekken soundtrack in your videos and I hope you keep at it. Second, I really want Kiryu or Majima from the Yakuza series as guest characters. I was surprised to see Noctis as guest character but I immediately fell in love when I saw his gameplay. I guess I'm one of the people who look forward to him as I played and enjoyed FFXV.
