The whole mystery around Nian and her family has to be my favorite plot outside the main story. I can't imagine all 11 of her siblings will become operators but I'm all onboard getting a new piece of their story once a year until it's conclusion. We also know that they have a brother that is a great chef and a sibling that is a writer, during who is real nian says something to the effect that dusk and the writer don't get along because they can't accept that painting and writing have the same source. So far it seems like all the siblings are masters of a particular craft. As for the question of race, their fear of fire crackers calls back the the Nian, the mystical creature that shares this trait. The Aegir connection is interesting and hopefully the next one or two siblings we find will give us more answers.

We do know that one of their siblings is a writer or poet, in their conversation Nain says something about Dusk not getting along with "The word smith". Meaning that all of the siblings probably all have a skill related to the arts. Nain is a black smith, Dusk is a painter, and one of their siblings is writer.

Actually Lung (Long) is Chinese dragon, Men means door/gate in Chinese, it's a myth, in the story of Chinese culture, acient people saw carp fish migrating back to top of water fall in rivers(because lots of fish migrating to where they were born to to give birth to their childrens), ancient people don't understand how fish migration work but they imagined that there is a "dragon gate" on top of the water fall leading to the sky/heaven, carps are doing a trial trying to jump over the water fall/dragon gate, those carps who jumped over it will get a chance of evolution and evolve in to a dragon(Lung)

Since you mention they might be Aegir, just not based on traditional sea life.I might be wrong, but in chinese mythology, wasn't the king of the sea a dragon? That means they could be both aegir, and also based on chinese dragons, as we see with their tails and horns. Iirc, Son Wu Kong goes under the sea and into his palace to get the magic staff.

It is one of Nian's dialogue options when you have her as an assistant. So, if she's speaking the truth most of the time, we can safely assume that indeed, each of the 12 siblings are deities of their craft, with said craft being lost if they die. Another of her dialogues mentions a brother that can really cook. So perhaps there is a deity of cooking among siblings? Imagine losing that one...

@@Ekeron98 we have to keep in mind what does lost of craft means, certainly if it does happens, people still would be able to "cook" by burning a meat. Perhaps with 0 cooking skills, food tasted bad. But if you look at another perspective, if everyone's cooking is equally bad, it's normalized to be the standard cooking which in a way crafts are not totally lost but a new bad standard for the crafts are created

Maybe Mythical Eastern Dragons? i mean they could have an element corresponding to the Chinese Elements (Fire, Water, Wood, Metal, and Earth, where Nian is Metal and Dusk is wood, since inksticks are made out of soot from plant material and animal glue) and or their other siblings could also be ones that represent the Heavenly Creatures, the blue and golden dragon, phoenix, tiger, and the serpent tailed turtle.

My guess about their race is that their complete form might be a long sea dragon, like they are often depicted on ancient maps. That would make them a dragon that looks like ancient Asian, while also being a sea creature (Aegir).

Hmm I don't know about them being sea life/Aegirians. I would assume Nian and her siblings belong to a race similar to the Chinese mythological creature Nian or they are a part of that said creature. It's a lion dragon like creature. Nian, Dusk, Dusk's painting creatures, and the Tinmen all dislike the fire crackers similar to the mythological Nian. The other speculation is Nian and her siblings have certain traits the children of Long Wang (Dragon King). For example, Dusk has traits similar to a Jiao Tu as she does not like to be disturbed, while Nian has traits similar to a Tao Tie, which is a creature that likes to eat (this is also seen from her 3* battle dialogue).

I'm afraid that Nian is actually fulfilling the destiny instead even though she opposes against that idea. I mean, think about it..., The reasons why hundreds or even thousands of years the deity didn't get resurrected might be because the siblings are not connected or understand each other. They are and will be a ONE godly being, so they have to be empathetic towards one another and share the pain because at the end, they are all actually one individual that's just scattered. idk, this is all just theory but it could be right. Because just like a one wise tortoise once said, "One often meets his/her destiny on the road s/he takes to avoid it" EDIT: Just to get this out of the way too. Nian might also knows what she's doing is actually resurrecting the being but it was all her plan because she knows that Doctor (us) can stop the deity from rampaging and kill it for good and bring peace to Yen. Though with that, she is also going to be gone so that's why she goes on her way reuniting with everyone in order for her to die/disappear without any regret. anyway, it's just a theory of mine and I just want to share it so I can finally sleep in peace. ciao

Idk if this relates but I think the abilities of the 12 siblings might have something to do with the idea of "art" in China with modifications. Traditionally you have literature, music, dance, drawing, sculpture, drama, construction, and film. So maybe its those eight (Nian with sculpture or construction and Dusk with painting, that other one with literature) plus four extra ones (like the one with culinary abilities, so maybe like video games or something idk)

For my take on Nian and her siblings being Aegirian, I think it shouldn't be taken literal but rather they belong from a much wider group of species of similar ancestry. One that connects from the origins of Terra. As for her siblings, what I can say about their skills, since Nian and Dusk exhibit craftmanship and artistry respectively, maybe the rest of her siblings specializes in various discipline of arts and crafts.

Just a correction on the Saga thing. Saga wasn't actually in a painting for 10 years. That's just how long it seemed like to her within the painting. Dusk in her Storyteller Form says "You came to the mountain when autumn winds were yet blowing. 'Tis merely the beginning of winter now. It was but a brief dream." meaning Saga was only in there for 3 months at the most.

Well there's interesting idea in the new event. The title of the event is "Who is Real". It might refers to rather Nian and her Sibilings are real or the "I" who they will become is real. That's the whole story is about. Where Nian confront Dusk to ask the question "Who is the Real" ones. Them or The "I". And Nian doesnt want her existence just disappear when they merge. She want to be remembered as the person (Real Person) not just some part of other Person. She want meaning in her existence in Terra.

From what I gathered from Nian and Dusk's conversation I believe there are three factions between the Nian brothers and sisters. The ones that want the fusion. The ones that dont (like Nian) and the ones that dont give a f*ck (like Dusk) It appears Nian wants to convince as many of her family as possible to oppose the fusion to avoid the end of the world. Also, Nian is an actual chinese mythology Godzilla/Cthulu like creature thats hellbent on destroying the world, so I'd say the real name of the race would just be Nian. Oh and, in mythology, the Nian is also afraid of fireworks and fire crackers which I cant help to find kind of cute.

The whole "I wanted to put in the event title" actually happened to me. During one of the conversations between Dusk and Dawn, the event just kinda clicked and I muttered under my breath "Who is real". The writing was actually really good, and as a writer myself it felt pretty big brain for the event's dialog to flow so well that the whole point of the name just hits me like a truck at that exact moment.

Also I'm starting my own DND campaign set in Arknights (kinda similar to Harmacists). It's actually set 300 years in the future, and follows this exact thing happening. The players get Isekai by NiDu (Nian + Dusk) and is gonna follow the process of reuniting the deity. Despite the first 2 being fused, a lot of the drama will be about whether or not becoming 1 is a good idea. By the point in time of the campaign they did choose to accept the process, but they might go back to the POV it's bad.

To hopefully add a bit of insight, Nian, Dusk, and presumably all of their siblings seem to be designed around the arts as their recurring theme. Not like Arts, like magic, but _actual_ arts, like smithing, or painting, or even food. In one of Nian's secretary lines, she mentions how one of her brothers is a very skilled cook that can make food any time when asked. While I could be wrong and that's just a throwaway line, I feel like there's enough credence to suggest their family are based around art. Smithing, painting and culinary forms of art, and some other 9, whatever they may be. Now, to touch on something more important, mentioned by Qaiser, Dragons _are_ aquatic. While in Western myths and stories, they're more often associated with fire, in _Eastern_ myths they are more oft associated with water, and weather really. There's even a Chinese myth about 4 Dragon kings who can control the seas and weather. And since Lungmen in Arknights is very obviously heavily based off of China, I think it's safe to say the Lung also find their roots in the ocean.

Based on Chinese/Japanese mythology Dragon is not only a creature of fire but also can be symbolized as a creature of water so the AEgir race theory could be correct. Since most of the Lung race is based on Chinese mythology that means sooner or later they will add Qilin/Kirin which is one of the many creature that able to defeat a Dragon. But hey who knows, this is based on history there's no way the game would use history as a reference that'll be boring... Right?

Tad bit late, but refering to Nian and Dusk as Aegerian seems to be consistent with most things involving the Aegers. Skadi often talks about calamity and fighting the horrors of the deep. Whether or not you believe the tales are exasperated, it still does give credence to the claims of unheard, unnatural, or unfathomable enemies. Wasn't there dialouge with Kalts't somewhere whereshe talks with someone referring to things in the ocean? I dunno, I can't remember.

GIANT EYE OUTSIDE YOUR OFFICE WINDOW from trailer 1 is the key The 12 siblings clearly a reference to chinese zodiac, and chinese dragon, the TRUE Lung, is often associated with moving bodies of water (including seas) and weather. One of (apparently) Nian-kind is an aquatic-ish band member. THE GIANT EYE OUTSIDE YOUR OFFICE WINDOW is clearly hidden within cloud or thick mist. Its not too difficult to draw the preliminary conclusion, IMO

hmmm.. i've never really questioned the 'race' of nian and siblings, just bcz i'm chinese, and it's very straightforward that Nian is based on - well, Nian - which is..... some kind of monster mythical monster? and doesn't fit into any race. it's different with ceobe/cerberus, because cerberus is still clearly described as 'dog' so perro fits ceobe well. Nian as a monster isn't anything, some ancient chinese person just mixed a bunch of attributes together and POOF there we go LOL. im also convinced that its undisclosed bcz AK devs dont know what to call it either, at the point of release and just cross that bridge in the future. they're their own race, whatever arknights want to call it in the future. im very sure they're not Aegir. just like manticore's race is manticore - she's too unique to be anything else except herself. p.s. also Nian isn't a chinese dragon, both AK nian and myth nian. various chinese mythical creatures just happen to have dragonish attributes like that a lot.

Nian is a monster that lives under the see so the sisters might not be the exact same race but related to Aegirians. It's also possible that they are of the Elder bloodline. The Elder Bloodline might be a group of individuals who are true immortals, but are able to die in specific ways. Emperor and High Priest might also fall under this category, as they bear similar qualities to Nian, unable to sustain any form of injury.

Great Video! I like the stuff you talk about and it genuanly makes me exited for the future of arknights, however, I am really not too sure on the last point of the video, about The Nya sisters being Aegirs. For me it simply raises to many questions, lets start with the most obvious (And, full disclosure i haven't read all the dialogue in ancient forge and if i am wrong please do let me know): How the hell would closure know what Nians race is? Because, think about it, first of all her race is undisclosed meaning that not even the higher-ups at Rhodes might know her race, she also hasn't ever gone through an examination so we can rule those out as well giving her any kind of lead, so the only thing she might habe to go off is physical appearance, witch tbf if nian and dusk where born way back when the true lung where around, their physical appearance is probably not the best thing to get a lead off, considering possible YEARS of evolution. I think its more likely for it to be an offhand comment about her overall attitude and status in rhodes Island. As a side note, i think it would be bit wierd, Atleast in terms of themes for the Chinese game, from a Chinese company, making a Chinese new year event, with Chinese iconography... To have main characters based on sea creatures, and not all the mythological beast Chinese folklore has. Not to say there aren't any water based Chinese folklore creatures, but there are simply way more on-land, on top of the on-land being more recognizable to the public. Either way, great video! The myth goes: The 年兽 (Nian monster) is the mythical creature that ravaged the Chinese towns on the evening (the time when dusk comes) of the day of the Chinese New Year. The people found that loud noises, bright lights and colours and other things like lanterns scares the 年兽. Thus the reason for many red, yellow and gold colours, as well as firecrackers whick explode with a loud bang, are the tradition of the Chinese New Year. Interestingly enough, the 年兽 is also known as 夕, meaning evening, or Dusk. This might be an indication that the siblings are not all equally related, with some closer that others. It just could be that both the sisters were once one being, but now split up. Possibly all the siblings were once one being. Could be that they didn't like each other, and left the whole. Only the closest stayed in touch, like Nian and Dusk, who were once a duo of another, singular, smaller being. I think it's possible that Nian, Dusk and all their siblings were the individual gods that Yen defeated, but more likely, they are more demigods, or something not quite as powerful. Could it be that Nian wants revenge over the defeat of her kind years ago by Yen and the traitor? Thus why she wants to gather all the siblings again. But a more likely theory imo is that Nian, Dusk and their siblings was the traitor, who saw the good in the humans and decided to fight alongside them. However, when they were betrayed by Yen, everyone hates humans and are now spiteful. All other than Nian. Could be her interacting with humans a lot more than the others make her see that there is even more, and want to reunite all the siblings to fight against the other gods again, seeing their uprising (hinted by Nian saying that when it's over, they will not be there anymore, signaling the end of Yen and possibly the world by the gods). With the help of Rohdes Island this time. I will probably do more research on this as I am Chinese myself and this just seems cool.

I have a personal theory on that, as the number 12 is very interesting to me. Nian is very skilled at blacksmithing and forging with metal, and Dusk is incredibly gifted with art, poetry and theatrics. Two things that combine aspects of the Greek Olymp. The Olymp has 12 deities, and the deity of blacksmithing and craftsmanship is Haephestus, whereas the deity closest associated with art and poetry was Apollo. I think Nian and her siblings could represent something akin to the 12 Olympians. When looking for any IRL correlating information, regardless on where you look, the number 12 always leads to greek myth as the number 12 is primarily prominent there, as they have 12 Olympians, 12 Titans, heracles' 12 labors and the 12 constellations. That Nian and her siblings summ up 12 together with all of the elusiveness and hints of divinity is NOT a coincidence.

I like the idea of an Arknights Cthulhu, but I think that'll be related to the Abyssal Hunters. Instead, keeping with the mythological sealife if they are Aegirian, what if they turn into a Jormungandr-esque Leviathan? Afterall, Yen, based off of China, likely has Serpent-like dragons. Which, assuming Nian and her siblings are in fact Aegirian, it would make sense for them to turn into a Leviathan instead of a world ending squid.

i dont think they're the same with the Aegir nowadays in Terra but some kind of ancient creatures live under the sea - the Sea Dragons. The 12 siblings probably the 12 sons of Dragon King, 9 original and 3 additional from other versions. Nian's description also says :"lives under the sea or in mountains; attacks children". Dusk name references to Chu XI, the monster attacks people in Chinese New Year's Eve. Nian is the Year Beast that attacks people at the beginning of CNY. They both scared of firecrackers and red colored objects - that doesnt sound like AK Nian, she likes red clothes, eats chili/spicy foods, uses firecrackers to give her own little sister a PTSD. WHO IS REAL? I don't know, maybe they're both real, maybe both Nian and Dusk are the same monster - the Year Beast that attacks people during CNY days and nights. Or neither.
