I would say end of the day the design has to match with human's understanding of anatomy. Be it obvious or subtle. Just like if the artist actually removed the human ears. and its blank there. Now the design will look odd and even disturbing to viewer. All the lore is to cover that

When they refer to the "south" being in ruins, i believe it refers to the civilization that once occupied the deserts south of Sargon, and most of modern day sargon. it's rulership wasnt exactly clear, but it seems it was jointly ruled by the Aslan, and the now mostly extinct Nightzmora, however the region was attacked by collapsals, turning the one lush rainforests into the inhospitable desert we see today.
