Mysterious Wood Carvings in the Arcata Forest

A local team of investigators explores the mysteries and curiosities associated with 50+ year old wood carvings in the Arcata Community forest.

UPDATE! We've received some promising leads on information about the artist who carved the sculptures - we are following up and will film part 2 about the artist, if we can verify the info and find someone willing to be interviewed about it. Also, we were hoping this video might lead to the appearance of one of the remaining 3 missing deer ears. Javier, with the City, said he would re-attach it if it ever was recovered. ("Humboldt Outdoors" is produced by volunteers primarily for broadcast on Humboldt's community access TV channel (12).

Great video! That old stump is a treasure of the Community Forest. My kids were really fascinated by the creatures in "the alcove" and we always wished we could see the sculpture at the very top a bit better. They really enjoyed climbing around that old stump and kept discovering new things.

Thanks Erik - I was hoping the video might lead to more information about the artist and/or the missing ears. And, sure enough, I now have some leads I'm following up on - so keep an eye out for a part 2 update on this!

Th anks for this! I remember seeing those sculptures all the way back in the early 70's when I was only around four years old. They obviously made a big impression on me! :) I went to a preschool that used to be there in the park, and we would go out into the forest on a pretty regular basis, so I think I must've seen them fairly often.

Thanks Ken - as a result of this video, I have some promising leads on the artist that I'm following up on for a part 2. I'm also hoping someone might come up with another one of the missing deer ears. Javier said he would re-attach another one if it ever materialized! That's very interesting about the pre-school near there.
