Game Maker's Toolkit has a series called Boss Keys where he talked about the design of Zelda dungeons and now talks about Metroidvania games. In that series he has identified 3 types of zelda dungeons, Gauntlet, Lock and Key, and Puzzle Box dungeons. He has defined puzzle box dungeons as like solving a rubix cube from the inside. He loves puzzlebox dungeons and I share in that love of them. The reason I mention this is because the water temple in OoT is a puzzle box dungeon. Like Focie said, it dared to challenge the player to be aware of their environment and how they can affect it. In fact, all of the dungeons in Majora's Mask are all puzzlebox dungeons, that may be why these dungeons are still loved to this day. I highly recommend anyone reading this comment to watch GMTK's full series, espiecially TBM and focie, so that you can learn a bit about what makes zelda dungeons and metroidvania games so special. Every episode of that series is eye-opening.
