The documentary is wrong to say that Pilgrims Rest is a Ghost Town. I visited the town a few times and enjoyed my stay.It's true the boom days of gold mining are gone , but the town has survived and is not abandoned, as the docu says.

It was actually abandoned until someone got the idea, in the 1970s I think, to renovate it and turn it into a "living museum".

Pilgrims rest is near Graskop and Sabie. They are all tourist hotspots and biking hotspots. Its not too far from Johannesburg so loads of people go there for weekends. The town is still there and is a heratige site. Loads of people go there for nature and hiking also.

My grandfather was responsible for keeping the Jubilee mine at Pilgrims Rest alive till he died in 1945. I discovered his story when a dejavu experience standing on a suspension bridge over the Blyde Canyon in the 60s caused me to ask of the Rand Mines geologist Buster Fowler, with whom we were staying near June Guest’s Royal Hotel, if the name JB Taylor meant anything to him. JB’s colourful life and times in the area and his connection to “Jock of the Bushveld” author Percy Fitzpatrick opened up a vista of landscape and memory I am privileged to now know about. Some time later I wrote and recorded a song about JB, that is on my KZbin channel. (Good luck finding it among the many other Nick Taylor’s online) 😉

I agree ... I have been taking visitors there for many years. A stay at The Royal Hotel is legend -- not to mention the attached pub that used to be a church, transported from Mozambique. The famous Robber's Grave etc etc etc. So odd 🤔 that such a good documentary got that wrong.😖 😖😖

I'm South African 🇿🇦 and weird I'm from 1988 born and bred and this story never got told to us so appreciate this episode for pilgrims rest which is 1 heck of a sad story and they want to talk smack about the boers which is sad they genuinely tried to help so that's the 1st problem. 2nd is the greed and economy and 3rd is eskom electricity and there is a 2000 megawatt hydro electric generator sitting there and no one is making new ones so we can get off the coal crap 😢 and no loadshedding

14 h35 High up in the Makhonja mountain ridge(Wonder of the world )lies a town that was called "Eureka city" in the 1800.This town also was triving because of gold,but due to the high altitute this town was difficult to reach( there's even a tunnel that was dug through one of the mountains to make it easier to reach Eureka city by donkey which was the means of transport.In the late 1800 they abonded this place because of the difficulty to reach and they started a town that was more assesable at the foot of the Makhonja mountain range.This town was then named after the Barber brothers who discovered gold in this region.This historical town is called Barberton in Mpumalaga(meaning where the sun comes out) a province in SA.I am a citizen of Barberton a town with many historical sites to visit it was also where the first stock exchange started , founder was Solly Marks the building is still here as many other historical places is also here and the highlights for the gold diggers were of course Cockney Liz wi was a dancer in the local bar.This town is surely the place to visit if you're interested in history

After being abandoned as a mining town, Pilgrims Rest was restored as a "living museum" town. The Hotel, Post Office, Railway Station, and numerous other places of interest were authentically renovated and restored to more or less their original condition, all fittings such as light fittings, toilets, baths, taps and even furniture where carefully sourced ANTIQUES. This was done to offer an authentic "time warp" experience for tourists. UNFORTUNATELY, the ANC came into power, and not to soon after, trucks arrived in the middle of the night, and anything of value suddenly disappeared. The town was quite literally stripped for CORRUPT financial gain. THE STORY OF AFRICA. 🤨

@@TamimLB My grandad was on the diamond fields as a young man, but when his family found a worthwhile diamond, they paid off the workers and moved away. Grandad JB Taylor became an assayer for folks like Rhodes Barnato and co, and also started a transport riding business. He traveled from Kimberly along the Reef to Barberton. He tells how on one journey he picked up Percy Fitzpatrick at a Lowveld drift store, and they travelled together for a while. I think JB was a kind of “industrial spy” for Julius Werner and Alfred Beit, cos he always had carrier pigeons, and my aunt told me he managed to get word to them before the Barberton boom crashed. JB became a friend and confidant of Oom Paul Kruger .. thereby hangs a tale 😎

In regard to the SA segment, the "boers" in the Anglo-Boer war were not only from Dutch descent. My great grandfather was a "boer" as well, but was born in the United Kingdom.

In Denys Reitz’s book Commando, he describes how a number of other nationalities were on the Boers side .. the Russians provided an ambulance service .. there was a whole Irish company, several German and American volunteers fought to the end with Smuts and even with the “Bittereinders” who ended up clothed in mealie bags (maize or corn sacks) because the British never told them they would be shot as spies if they were taken prisoner wearing cast off Khaki uniforms. Considering the ruthless way the frustrated British conducted the war, it is a tribute to the surviving Boer nations that they made peace and worked hard to rebuild the nation that became South Africa.

@@carolb8452 According to Denys Reitz, who at 17 joined the war with his brothers from the Free State, and fought to the end and was at the Vereeniging peace talks with Smuts.. the language spoken was Dutch. The evolution into Afrikaans took many years from long before the Boer War but I’d say only became Afrikaans in the 20th century. Would be happy to be corrected on this.

Afrikaans only became prominent in the early 1920s and today it is an official language in South Africa and they no longer speak Dutch. I am half Afrikaans courtesy of my mother and I still live in South Africa and have an interest in SA history with more than a passing knowledge. I've also traveled a bit and noticed the Flemish language in Belgium is closer to Afrikaans than what Dutch is.

I had the privilege of visiting the Belvedere Hydro Electric Power plant twice between 2003-2007. My breath was taken away with the natural beauty down in the kloof. The powerplant It was still untouched with the original switchgear, wires, and motors in tact, even the little paper rolls of production records dating back many years were lying on cupboards. Today its been vandalised and looted, my fear is that the Zama-Zama illegal miners will eventually discend on the area and wreak havoc, stripping everything metal for scrap cash. Government parks management have neglected the place and now the future is uncertain. I cherish those memories forever.

My partner and I visited Pilgrims Rest during March 2023, we arrived 10am in the morning and parked in the street under a tree, I was bombarded by the "nut lady" and followed me around waiting for me to buy her goods. We went to the Royal Hotel to find some coffee, we stepped into a beautiful location, however, NO SERVICES were available due to loadshedding. How disappointed we were. I played for weddings in that little church up on the hill, and my late husband was the photographer, I lived in that area for 17 years and sorry to say the place was disserted and quiet. Museums were closed, no trading and only a memory of what is once was. The only take-away we had was nostalgic photographs. Due to BEEE, the baby was thrown out with the bath.

Lol. Ive had coutless beers in The Royal Hotel in Pelgrims Rest. Itsa a major Tourist destination in the Eastern Transvaal. Yes, no official gold is mined there anymote, but the "Zama- zamas" (illegal miners from Mozambique, Zimbabwe, Malawi, Angola and furher afield - in fact, all those who our incompetent government allows to seep through our borders) still crawl through those tunnels. They bring crime, like the infamous farm murders, with them. And yet they sustain the town through the economic activity theu bring with their slivers of gold. Abondoned? Never.
