I had the pleasure of meeting Neil Strauss once in 2007 in a Montreal bar with a couple of my buddies. We recognized him and asked him to work his magic on the hottest girl in the room. The reality is that it's not hilarious at all, if you watch Conan regularly you'd notice that he's a very anxious awkward person and barely likable without all the fame around him. And that's what men in his position do, they make fun of those who are more successful with tricks because it demolishes their core belief that you have to work hard and be famous to easily approach people and be instantly likable. What I like about Conan (not just in this interview, but in general) is that he's truly in it for the humor and making everyone laugh, thereby understanding that being politically motivated, and having an agenda in interviews is bad. He always remains relatively neutral, and doesn't try to make his guests feel bad in an interrogating way. Most interviewers would give him a hard time for being a pickup artists, and bring feminism, harassment, and social norms into it, but Conan accepts it with curiosity and non-judgment, and adds on his comedy.
@thekifantasy Жыл бұрын
I'd beg to differ, if you watch the interview again you'll notice there's clearly an agenda and Conan is just a pawn in it. Pickup was often looked at as taboo and frowned upon especially at the time of this interview. You'll notice the crowd reactions paint Mystery out to be an outcast. He barely gets any laughs from the audience while they laugh at the slightest expressions from Conan. This creates a hierarchy as though he is a madman trying to sign up people to somewhat of a cult. Though they promoted Mystery, for them it was to shine a spotlight on a "weird creep" trying to pick up women.

The issue is that PUA community can't be taken seriously or endorsed publicly, because, well, women. Just watch any movie about a great ladies man character, he always ends up domesticated by a woman. These are like female porn. This mystique that women are these unsolvable puzzles must go on. Besides, PUA reality is counterintuitive, so far from what society thinks seduction is about that it turns into an easy comedy subject. Most people have a hard time accepting that more often than not black nails will probably do more for the average guy than a Ryan Gosling kind of suit. Mystery knows that he is there for pure entertainment and not for a formal interview. Just like most women understood that they would go to Craig Ferguson's show to pretend they were flirting with him not for a conventional type of interview.

I had nothing to lose by asking these women such a rando question, in September no less. About a half hour later, we had closed our store, and I was in the mens section fixing the racks when she suddenly came up and asked if I wanted to grab a drink! @EatYourVegs3 жыл бұрын
@@farhad71414 As I understand it, a frame is like the narrative you present to an interaction, your way of viewing the world. The other parties present their narrative too, and whomever is more confident of their narrative, that narrative will win as the combined narrative between the interacting people. In this case, Conan is trying to ridicule Eric and his ideas, but he is completely unphased by it and holds secure in his view of the world that they are normal and effective. The audience viewing the interaction will be more likely to accept that narrative seeing the interaction too, Similar to an presidential debate. This concept applies to every interaction though. If you approach a girl the interaction between you two starts completely from scratch. It was like a switch: "i don't need what the fuck you got", and all the power the women had all of a sudden didn't exist anymore. I met a PUA guy a few years ago. He had zero personality and yet used these techniques to get far more sex than I could even dream of. Watching him talk to women was actually quite sickening though, because it was clear he only wanted sex. He'd be asking for their numbers within minutes of starting totally inappropriate conversations. In short, he got lots of action but still seemed the very definition of a loser.
@nikolairose27392 жыл бұрын
That's the problem with pua guys. Their entire persona revolves around them getting action. The skill is great but you can't make it your entire identity.

@@nikolairose2739 Yes, that plus one cannot 'game' a chick for marriage. PUA is good only for sport fucking.

These guys are so fucking needy for pussy approval. These fucktrumpets only get women that are of low quality. High quality women don't fall for this bullshit. I was PUA for 5 years
@coolclipz912 жыл бұрын
That’s your perception though, the females obviously see something else in him that make them want to have sex. Stop hating man, life is a game in general. Why do guys even go through the stress of becoming high value? To have the options of women that they want. What good is a Lamborghini if you’re not pulling 9’s and 10’s with it.

Comment section is blind. Mystery lost the frame and Conan made him look ridiculous. The audience and other guests were clearly with Conan. And Mystery's laughing along was only strategic, and ultimately in vain.

@@chrisr3945 I haven't seen any of these PUA-types, especially the fans, figure out a normal talk-show yet. It is kind of fascinating since they think usually they are cracking social dynamics and cues to a higher level than normal people. The David Letterman Show, Conan O'Brien, Jay Leno... These shows are all about the host - that is what people kept tuning back in for hence they name them to themselves. The whole point is to have repeat viewers. 90 % of the time they have some guest on that largely, the viewers haven't heard about. Especially types like this where just about nobody heard of the guy. They got less than 10 minutes. These shows then has to be entertaining to keep you watching - as the name of the show implies, that usually turns into the host holding a show, keeping it entertaining and making fun of the guest to some degree. They can't rely on random guests to do their job for them, very few guests are Norm MacDonald-types that understand how to keep it entertaining and attract viewers. So that is how it goes - the guest most often becomes the meat of the subtle ongoing joke the host tells every night as long as they are not aware of this (and sometimes even if they are).

conan is a good interviewer, when he was talking about mystery used to be rejected and mystery is thinking ok here are the normal mocking hes expected and conan sees he inadvertently insulted him, he goes and makes a self deprecating joke to change the tone and keep things moving. someone like letterman would have doubled down and start ripping into him.

If you can be confident on a TV show in front of millions of people, approaching women is child's play. We all start off fearful and shy, but overtime we develop confidence, but it takes a lot of work for many. Especially those with low self-esteem. Good looking people naturally have confidence and it's easier to get attention. Average and below average looking dudes have more work to do to approach with confidence. But it can be done with experience, trial and error and mostly matching your looks to the other girl. If you are a 4, you don't go after a 10 unless you like rejection. Go after a 5 or 6 or 7 at the most. If you are a 7 or 8, you can go after an 8 or a 9.

I like conan but very disappointed in the way he dealt with this topic. He knows how difficult it is to navigate through the world of dating for men and instead of extrapolating good advice or even just being neutral he made fun of Mystery. It's a shame because the men watching could have been helped but no doubt most laughed it off as ridiculous. Now fast forward 13 years and men have it even harder as women all think they are God's gift to mankind so they are lonelier when they hit their 30s and men are lobely too
