Amazing finds found metal detecting in North Lancashire.
A fragile mystery silver object not yet identified. It was at first thought it could be an Aestal;
Aestel, from the Latin hastula (a little spear);
means a pointer for reading manuscripts.
The flat back confirms identification, as would
lie conveniently on the pages of a book.
The latest thought is that it could be a pencil holder of late Georgian or early Victorian time.
Also found, and maybe should have been mentioned first! Is a musket trigger guard. This was found on the same field as a beautiful hand engraved musket side plate. It would seem they are connected.
The third fantastic find was a silver thimble (only my second) and a silver ring. These were found together, the ring slipped over the thimble. Maybe a lady out on a picnic and doing a bit of sewing after church on a Sunday? Who knows.
Oh, and just for good measure, a great buckle from 1550 - 1650.
Good luck out there everyone. Happy hunting.
