The Middle Ages produced some of the most amazing women mystics in western history. But rarely do we get insight into the entire mystical life of a person in the way that we do for the 13th century German Mechthild of Magdeburg. Her "Flowing Light of the Godhead" is an amazing - if not at times shocking - record of the experiencing being taken into the luminous relationship of the Trinity, the courtship and blissful consummation of love with the Divine and yet finally falling into the very hellish pits of alienation from, and yet, with the Divine. Mechthild's work is a true surviving treasure of mystical piety, phenomenology and literature: explore it in this episode!

It’s the stuff we don’t plan for, stuff that just happens at the right minute & right second, stuff that ‘everything in one’s life’ aka every action and reaction ultimately lead to that ‘perfect timing’. Proof that there is more to ‘this’ (life) than we can possibly comprehend.

@@Bildgesmythe it’s unfortunate how important these people are yet they are all treated as loonies. For instance Chris Bledsoe is a modern “mystic” that was attacked at all sides by the religiously devout and scientifically strict (both represent belief systems that limit the growth of humanity) alike until he was proven right with the balls of light actually being capable of being witnessed by anyone regardless of who you are. Robert Monroe was another “mystic” but he was really successful due to him knowing that he can cut off those that are more interested in ridiculing him then testing his “powers” (that again, anyone can use). Tom Campbell is essentially his protege that is trying his hardest to blaze the trail in creating a general field theory of reality that truly covers all ground that explains way more than anyone else previously could.

Being on meds absolutely does not prevent one from being a mystic. I have been medicated for bipolar my entire life, and had plenty of mystical visions along the way. Meds have made my life far better, and made me far more capable as a writer and thinker than I ever could have been without them.

I've wondered that my entire life. I really think the mystical life is the next step in human evolution. The next step will be understanding the human consciousness, we are more than advanced apes. The world view of this age is far too small to encompass everything, We don't know what we are, quite yet .. consciousness is the real "unexplored territory" - even more than Outer Space or the bottom of the sea. My guess is that someday science will realize everything is consciousness and that we are all part of the ALL ... Probably, through the study of quantum physics? It might give us some clues. There is nexus to all this, we are just ignorant to it. It has something to do with energy - the flowing white light is energy, first and foremost, it is God's awareness, it flows.... I'd like to be there when we really begin to understand what we human beings really are. Right now? more questions than answers.

Mental Health knocked on my door about 4 weeks ago, I'm glad they did not come in the several months before. I had a treatment order that was lifted after one day. I had to basically explain my reason for evolving in my own life, an infection of all things opened my eyes to acknowledge I must search for a deeper meaning no matter how obsurd my logical, pragmatic side of me resists. I was proud that I responded more humble than I thought I could be. I did however let them know my mental strength is tempered and tested, basically if I've set my mind on something only my own experience will persuade my conclusions. But what an emotional few years it's been, eventually led me to this chanel and the now vivacious quest for knowledge in this area.. I just wish I had started this journey before, that said I would not of had a path as profound if I had found this journey from curiosity alone, having a life crisis of emotion which was finding out I'm a father and now continuing to fight to see my daughter has shown me a depth of self I would not of maybe found otherwise. I'm really surprised no-one that I respect or knows my life journey ie.. Family or friends encouraged this area of truth searching before. Probably hid it from me lol, I've found it now🤣. Me and truth are symbiotic, it's a unbending master, but will lead you to profound realisations. Some people seem to not understand this is not a choice for me, besides I'd choose truth as my master regardless. Peace to all.

Likewise I thought Jeanne D'arc was lonely in the middle ages as a woman who received from the Devine and is celebrated by history. Considering what I know about D'arc is she started channeling spirituality at around the same age but living such a short life of chastity, dominated by war. Her revelations seem to of been very specific, mission from the divine. This is what makes this video so surprisingly refreshing and typical of many sadly patriarchal religious evolution in the AD common, they were usually burnt, marginalised, wiped from history or hidden and if venture further and speculate completely fraudulently been credited to a male or done for the safety of the female. One thing Dr Sledge has made clear though is Jeanne D'arc is far from alone. It makes perfect sense to myself feminine should be so much more sensitive in receiving the divine, I think women have been so busy giving the divine to our children the don't have time to receive, it's great to see more proof of this in Dr Sledges video. This was a comment I did make to another person I saw your after and wanted to share this with you also. Blessings to you.

It takes time to begin to emerge from the chrysalis of stayed and steady Protestantism, but we are guided by the Loving Light of Christ, regardless of the struggles. I pray it is well for your soul, just as I share your appreciation of our brother and teacher, who is unbounded in his commitment towards exhumation of the Truly Divine from within these dying shells. Idk if he realizes, but I think he does, and I so admire his enthusiasm and humility. Blessings.

It is refreshing, enlightening and liberating to find a Christian mystic who fully embraces the reality of our animal and sexual nature. Too often, we have the idea that the erotic must be fled or repressed in order to be 'pure' and hence pleasing to God. This, however, would be to fall into the Jansenist or Gnostic heresies. One caveat however. These revelations of the divine erotic are not an invitation to indulge in licentiousness and promiscuity.

Wow! This is a revelation for me. All my life I’ve felt as I was very different and at 15 I walked away from my family, because of my strong independence and a profound sense of being put in the wrong place from the beginning of my life. I’ve built a strong foundation for myself and feel sovereign in my own heart due to my love and belief in the Divine Power. I never heard of these women although I remember former lifetimes and I feel very familiar with this story. I also write about sex, spirituality and philosophical thought. What you have described sounds quite similar to the descriptions of Kundalini yoga from India. Through certain postures & other physical & mental techniques, the Kundalini energy is raised from the sacral chakra (at the base of the spine) to the crown chakra for the experience of universal "bliss" or "oneness." My description is oversimplified, but it can be taught. There are accounts of some people spontaneously experiencing Kundalini without training. It can be painful & dangerous.

I am not sure how to say this...but, yes, this all is very familiar to me. Mechthild and I would have a great deal to talk about if we could have ever met. I'm the reverse of her, though, where she wanted union with God, I flee it. I've repressed mine for a very long time, but it's re-awaking, I feel it is a duty, not a pleasure and I feel the commitment once given will effect all my future lives.. There are sexual components to the experience, but I feel that is because the energy passes through all the centers of the body. I'm truly shocked she had the courage to ever let another person read the book. I see and have seen the flowing light frequently and I've wrote/writing what I consider a spiritual biography of my soul... it isn't science fiction but it isn't quite fantasy, either. I too use courtly love as the metaphor, an image. Old age is very hard on a mystic's body. We don't have the physical strength any longer, and the energy can cause pain. I'm in my 70s but I still struggle with speaking about what I have experienced. I'm not that 31 yr old woman who, out of curiosity and a soul-deep need, started exploring the spiritual realms. I'm trying to open up more ... but it is a constant struggle. I don't know for sure, but I think there are frequently, maybe always, things a mystic can't resolve in their own souls.. some thorn or sin... or, mistaken idea, that is their own particular error. In the end, that is why union is so necessary, Only the Spirit can show us the way.

@@lucydayLucida I don't know if I would walk the same path if I knew then, what I know, now. I felt called for this journey. I was 28. I did what Christ said to do, without realizing it. I didn't consider myself a Christian, then. I went into my study at night and meditated. I read a lot. I asked for guidance. I found books that helped me understand. I wanted not magical power, like the witches, but, wisdom, knowledge. Things began to happen. It is wonderful to know that the Trinity (Father, Son, Spirit) truly exists. I don't deny that. When you know that, for sure, a great many changes come about and you are challenged, in a way, few are ever challenged. It takes the courage of .. a Knight? Starship Captain? Superhero? to really dive down into the realms of the soul and see your true self as you really are, and once you really experience God's first introduction, I don't believe anyone could possibly ever resist the temptation to go further. You have to release a lot of lies - anger, pain, abuse - anything that blocks you from God. You will certainly learn things about your soul that shock you, often, causing dismay and confusion. I fell in love with God, with Christ. It's that simple. Love. You fall in love. That is why Courtly love is the perfect metaphor. Another one is is the hunt for the White Stag. The Hunt for the Great Unicorn. But the White Stag is hunting you, also. The Unicorn wants to give Himself to you, also, The seeker and sought-after are the same. It's a love that can't seem to die. Even when you suffer the greatest setbacks of your life, even when you lose the one person you loved profoundly, Even when people you thought were friends, betray you... Quitting is never an option. You can distract yourself with mundane matters and entertainment but it is all ashes. I always thought I would leave the path if the worse happened, but I never have. Blows only strengthen my love of God. I want to see what the end of this Path really is. My great struggle this lifetime has been a lack of self worth? Self confidence? I don't like revealing myself to others, I feel unworthy. Uncertain? I'm not well educated, I have only a High School education. I've educated myself. I know God exists, but can I truly trust Him to care about me? Believing in myself, in my experiences? Could this all be a lie? I am natural communicator - it is my duty to use what I have learned and tell others of my explorations of my soul and God. God does not give gifts and expect us to hide, forever. I want to do what you suggested. It may be time to return to reading great mystics again. I think that my ultimate fate will be putting everything I've written on the net - as a gift to you, to everyone. "This is where I went, this is what I learned, this journey is possible." before I die. Lucyday, thank you for what you said.

You really hit me with the Sledge hammer this time, wow, I was mesmerized, and to end it that way juxtaposed with Mechtilde's failing body still being a conduit for The Light while Marguerite being burned for "lesser crimes", brought a tear to my eye. Mathilde being in the hell of her broken body and still faithful to the end "in spite of being in Hell", reminds me of a line in Blade Runner, where Tyrell is speaking to his cyborg creation Roy Batty the Replicant whose life clock is about to expire: "The light that burns twice as bright burns half as long, and you have burned so very very brightly Roy". Mechtilde burned so hotly, so brightly, I guess she was too hot for the pyre but she still paid a price. I was fascinated. It is so heartwarming to see you do justice to leading spiritual women who have historically been trampled and burned for far too long. Fantastic episode Dr. Sledge.

Materialism for me means concrete analysis of concrete conditions. There is simply no concrete analysis of concrete conditions involving the sublime without also appreciating the sublime in its context and for its logic. Any materialism that fails to appreciate the sublime should be relegated to the dustbin of history.

@@TheEsotericaChannel wow this is even more of a window. I, of course when hearing that you were a materialist, made some assumptions about that definition that I should not have. I apologize if you felt relegated to a bygone era in that stance. I love the sharing of your own personal philosophy as well. A lot of creators that touch on this stuff either share to much or not at all, about their own philosophy, I think you do a perfect amount..

Fascinating video Dr Sledge. While I've long known of Hildegard of Bingen, I'd never heard of Mechtild. Her introduction of an erotic element into her mysticism reminds me of the poetry of John Donne (Batter my heart, Three person'ed God) The 'Lady of Pain' brings to mind the poet AC Swinburne's masterpiece 'Dolores', where he uses the epithet 'Our Lady of Pain' over and over to describe his 'anti-Madonna' Dolores. Thanks so much for this. btw I love your references to Clive Barker and I'm a big Hellraiser fan. Shalom.

I love seeing you cover topics within the Christian milieu. Like many nowadays who find interest or practices in the esoteric/occult, I grew up devoutly Christian but later in life having to turn away from that upbringing after being burned by the religious communities which I found myself within. However, I always found it rather disheartening that - outside the modern interpretations of Christianity which more and more people are finding issue with - the richness of Christian practice from bygone times is almost universally overlooked, the modern sects often assumed or even directly claimed to be the only modes of Christianity. Far aside from that narrative of an unchanging tradition of belief and practice, Christianity has just as much depth and diversity as every other spiritual path. I’m glad you make videos like this one, hopefully they’ll help people understand that historical Christianity has so much more to offer than what we have today! Even though I think I’ll never be able to return to Christianity, I can’t help but find inspiration and a deep admiration for these kinds of topics.

25:06 So there is a concept in the therapy model known as Internal Family Systems or Parts Work. They speak of external entities. There are two kinds: Guides, who are helpful. And Unattached Burdens, who cause harm. One might argue the second type is demons. The best way to release an Unattached Burden (or demon) is to offer it genuine compassion and send it back to the light. They often go. They need our *physical bodies* in order to find redemption! ----- There is a lot about this woman I relate to. Including posession. Thank you so much for sharing and I thank the Holy Spirit for sending it my way.

I have been studying her since 1993, and she's an inexhaustible topic, despite only having one relatively average-sized identified work. So, needless to say, I will be very curious to see what you come up with on her! (There used to be more regular presentations on her at Kalamazoo, both by the International Marguerite Porete Society, and independently organized; and I even organized and chaired a session on her at one point!)

The meek shall inherit the Earth.
@globalgulag5586
@globalgulag5586 23 күн бұрын
To be meek in a mystical sense, is to have a gentle, surrendering vision of the ‘earth’ or, adamah, the soil, the ground, the unborn, undying ground of all phenomena, En Sof, the vision of which is your birthright. The word for the ground of Eden that is used in Genesis is adamah. It contains the name Adam that refers to the human mind and its capacity for creativity and critical thinking. The word for ground adds a heh to the name. The symbol associated with the heh is a window - a transparent barrier that allows vision to pass unimpeded. Adam has two parts of its own: the alef of the unborn ground and the word dam, which means blood. Blood refers to the all-pervasive fluidity of the alef. Therefore, the name Adam implies the blood of alef, and adamah refers to the blood of alef that serves as the means to cultivate the transparency of vision.
