Suggestion: I think you put too much emphasis about how the pokemon does in gym battle and less about how useful they are throughout a playthrough, like discussing how they do well/bad in different routes considering their movepool, pp, and the types of pokemon you'll encounter in a stretch of routes, and also the common types of pokemon trainers usually have in the game itself. Their experience group must be tackled as well. And how the pokemon fits in the team. Ex. Venusaur in kanto region. He's a good pokemon to start the game but througout the run you'll notice that he'll get a hard time gaining exp. since almost all the common pokemons throughout the playthrough are poison, flying, and bug types, some psychic and fire too, so they tend to fall out in exp. compared to the rest of the team and will hamper your time in letting venusaur to catch up in levels to be ready for the pokemon league. Gym battles and pokemon league are important. But so does your journey to get to them.
@pieterhofkens72594 жыл бұрын
You took really lang typing this
@bulborb87564 жыл бұрын
honestly against regular trainer's & routes it REALLY doesn't add much tbh so it's better to focus on the important battles in the game: Gym Leader's (trial captains, Kahuna's & totems in gen 7), your Rival(s), the evil team, the elite 4 & the champion....basically the more important boss fights
@ReventonSpeed4 жыл бұрын
Also wouldn't hurt if he would compare Gyarados to the other water/flying types you could pick up in game as well. Example, in gen 1 there's really no reason to pick Gyarados over Starmie, Lapras or Vaporeon. Especially when you consider that after the physical/special split in gen 4, Gyarados really lacks a reliable physical water STAB until later on when it learns Aqua Tail or Waterfall. That's a problem most physical attacking water types run into.

I've noticed that you don't factor in that Gyarados gets Ice Beam or Blizzard at all in gen 1, the reason I bring this up is that you mention that the Gyarados Venusaur/Exeggutor Matchup is a bit rough because it is relying on Dragon Rage when it shouldn't since it has fantastic special and has the combo of BoltBeam before the 4th gym, so it would also destroy Golbat, and the Dragons that Lance carries, so because of this coverage i just think that it in Gen 1 is a bit better than you give credit for.

Agreed. Gyarados's main advantage is that Magikarp is EVERYWHERE in most regions. Comparing the pros and cons of raising Magikarp vs. waiting for wild Gyarados, raising another Water-type instead, or just waiting for worthwhile moves, would do wonders for this series, I feel.

I love pairing Gyarados with a Charmeleon for early-game domination, it’s so satisfying to destroy everything around me because of my gigantic water snake that NPC’s don’t have until Lance. (Rival has a Blastoise).

Actually, Gyarados is fine but you're better off with Starmie. Why? Gyarados Special Attack is 60 while Starmie is 100. Also, Stamie has 115 Speed which makes it a quick Pokemon. It can outspeed some but not all of them. Plus, it can learn Thunderbolt for other Water types, Ice Beam for Grass and Flying, Psychic or Psyshock for Poison and Fighting, and Hydro Pump for Fire and Ground types. Yes, Starmie has a good movepool. Gyarados is a Physical Attacker but you can teach it Sp. Attacks if you want but it wouldn't matter unless it's Generation 1.

they should release a game where you can literally travel to every single region and fight the gyms and elite 4. of course you can choose which region you start in, but like the goal would be to become the ultimate champion and have literally every pokemon ever... this would be sick and it can be played on every present day console (xbox, playstation, switch, pc, 3DS)

How would you handle the levels throughout the game? You'd be pushing 100 possibly after the 2nd going into the 4th regions
@Lav9974 жыл бұрын
@@matthewroberts198 maybe in each region you can bring 2 pokemon with you if they are lvl 5 or lower so you will have to do breeding content the pokemon you want to the region. you can also store your pokemon in a master pc box for a massive challenge at the end once you beat everything. I think the aim of the game would be to fill out the pokedex to maybe unlock mythicals so you are catching everything along the way? the big challenege at the end wouldnt allow legendaries and maybe you can only use 1 pokemon per region so you dont deck yourself out with maybe just gen 1/2/3/4/5/6 on one team. With all that in mind you need to plan your teams out better cause the big tourny at the end once you use a pokemon you cant use it again so your teams all need to be balanced and the other trainers you fight should have like a nuzlocke style where you dont know what they will have or any of the moves. Maybe your rivals from all the games could also be in the tourny and you have to face all of them too.

@@matthewroberts198 Thinking outside the box you could just continue to increase them. The level cap at 100 is pretty arbitrary

The question for GSC and HGSS Gyarados is whether you should wait until after Morty (when you have Surf) to obtain your Gyarados. The Red Gyarados comes at Level 30, so you don't have to worry about grinding up a Magikarp, and it should be near (or even above) the level of your team at that point in the game, unlike a lot of wild Pokémon in GSC/HGSS. In GSC, the Red Gyarados will also come with Thrash, probably one of its better physical attacks (until it becomes friendly enough with you that Return approaches max power). Other than fishing up a wild Gyarados at the Lake of Rage or Fuschia City, this is the only way you can get Thrash on Gyarados in GSC (as there is no Move Reminder available, unless you have access to Stadium 2). The downside to Gen 2 Gyarados is that it lacks a good Physical movepool outside of Normal-type attacks (it cannot learn Earthquake until Gen 3), unless you get lucky with the Hidden Power lottery (with HP Flying being the best, because of STAB). Shiny Pokémon can only have HP Grass or HP Dragon in Gen 2, so the Red Gyarados does not even have a chance to get a good Hidden Power. Gen 2 was also the nadir of Gyarados in competitive Pokémon, given this mismatch between its movepool (largely special) and its physically-oriented stat distribution. I've felt that the best uses for the Red Gyarados in GSC are an HM user (Surf/Strength/Waterfall/Whirlpool) and as a means to breed more shinies (since in Gen 2 only, DVs determine shininess); for GSC, Lapras is a far better Water-type in-game, and comes at the same time as the Red Gyarados (albeit at a lower level). With a moveset of Surf/Ice Beam/Body Slam and one of either Sing, Confuse Ray, or Perish Song, Lapras can perform quite well in-game (the main reason to use Sing is to try and put wild Pokémon to sleep to make them easier to catch); Thunder is also an option in this last slot if you want to gamble for the TM, as is Icy Wind (to slow down opponents given Lapras' low Speed). In HGSS, Gyarados has a similar movepool to Feraligatr, albeit with level-up access to Dragon Dance and earlier access to Aqua Tail (but lacks Crunch); as such, Gyarados can be a great Pokémon in HGSS for those who started with Cyndaquil or Chikorita. Also, I feel that Gyarados might just be better than the Squirtle line in Let's Go. LGPE lacks good Water-types early on, with only Squirtle, Magikarp, and Psyduck available before you get Sea Skim. Magikarp is literally the first Water-type available, and with a little effort you can grind it up to become a Gyarados before Vermilion City (before you get the gift Squirtle). The only downsides, aside from grinding, is that Gyarados has a slower growth rate, and its Mega Stone is not obtainable until post-E4, but Gyarados is much more powerful than Wartortle (the other Water-type you might have at that point in the game) with regards to physical attack, and only slightly lower in special attack; not to mention, you don't get Blastoise until level 36 anyways. Gyarados' base 125 Attack stat means that there is a massive power difference for the early-mid-game, when you are between levels 20 and 36 (and even Blastoise is stuck with base 83 Attack and base 85 SpA until you get its Mega Stone). The Scald TM from Misty (not to mention Headbutt from Brock plus Bite for physical coverage) can definitely hold you over until you get Waterfall at level 31; a STAB attack coming off of 60 SpA is not that bad for this portion of the game. Access to Crunch means that Gyarados can annihilate Sabrina's Jynx and Alakazam, as well (while Blastoise is stuck with Bite). After getting 7 badges (when Blastoise's Mega Stone becomes available), the power differentials definitely shift more in favor of Blastoise in its Mega form, but Gyarados is more than capable of holding its own in the late game (and also does not use up a mega slot, which might be better used by Charizard in many late-game battles).

In Galar, Gyarados is the best powerhouse available outside of legendaries. It excels as either a physical tank w/intimidate or attacker w/moxie. It can also wipe out most of Leon’s team with ease depending on its moveset and if it’s given time to set up rain dance/dragon dance. His Charizard gets one-shotted with either a rain dance boosted waterfall or Max Geyser.

I'd actually argue that Gyarados is the best weapon against Misty in Red/Blue/Yellow. As good as Venusaur is, even a Lv 20+ Ivysaur will struggle against Starmie. Overgrinding to near or beyond 30 will work, but you'll be going above that obedience cap, and that time and effort is better off spending that on Gyarados. A freshly evolved one is more than enough to beat Starmie, better tanking its Bubblebeams due to also having 100 Special, while exploiting its frail Defense with Bite. Ivysaur's lower Special means it can't tank Bubblebeam as easily, even with the Grass typing. Also means it can't hurt it Starmie as easily w/o PoisonPowder+Leech Seed, and even then, it's a slow process. Ivysaur will only barely have enough turns to set those up before it gets killed. Gyarados is also a great Dragonite-lite, since it's only slightly weaker, has a more common double weakness, significantly easier to obtain by comparison, but actually has powerful and reliable STAB moves it can exploit
