I really benefit a lot from your whiteboard lectures. They are so helpful, especially this one since I was never really instructed to do the butterfly. Before watching your video, when I tried it in the water, it was just awkward and I ended up kicking and splashing to the end of the pool. I needed to learn how to do it gracefully. This video helps a lot. I'll try it during my next training session in the pool. Thank you, Fares!

3.45 Water is 800 time denser than air, but water is not 800 times more resistant than air. Water resistance is not a constant. Resistance is a function of velocity as well as fluid density. The greater the speed the greater the resistance, which is why falling from a great height into water can be as deadly as falling onto concrete. In terms of swimming, the water resistance is also a function of how much of the body's surface is submerged in the water. For example the overall water resistance will be different at different moments in a stroke. The more of the body that is out of the water the less resistance, because there is less friction and drag. Even when fully submerged, the more aquadynamic a shape, the less resistance it experiences. For example a torpedo or a seal or an otter will experience less resistance moving through water than say an armchair or a bicycle or a tree.
@fksebati4 жыл бұрын
Thanks for brining in the physics! Yes, water is dense. Always looking for ways to move through it more efficiently!

@FaresKsebati2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! The best way to swim fast to make sure you don't break your body line and try to eliminate drag. In the case of butterfly, that usually means trying not to breathe every stroke! Pros like Michael Phelps can get away with breathing every stroke, but for most swimmers, it's more efficient to breathe every other stroke :)

I swim freestyle a lot and fast, but never mastered butterfly. This helped a bit, I am close to getting it nailed. Only issue is breathing part, many times I breath in some water, especially if there are some waves, while swimming freestyle, waves do not bother me at all, even big ones. Any advice how to breath in not to get water in lungs :)
@anesethemi50542 жыл бұрын
i think there is not much that can be done there, if ur for example not swimming in a pool where waves can happen. I know what u mean. With freely we are more flexible i guess with our movements hence breathing, where with butterfly u have to keep a constant movement.

This is a great video, but the "Angel Hands" you mention is an old school way of swimming butterfly. Ten years from now every flyer will use a vertical recovery in the butterfly (especially in the 50 and 100m events), aiming to take advantage of the gravity aspects of the recovery. So sorry, but no angel hands...

Hmm, the kicks are not the same size, and you actually show this in your animations, and as you swim. The difference is with the breathing kick. You can not engage your core totally since you are inhaling. The breathing kick has higher amplitude with the heels usually coming out of the water, again, look at your animations. As for the chest not moving up and down much, I was blown away by a video of Michael Phelps, there is an excellent one on You Tube about how he trained for it. His arms are extended in front a bit under the water, and his chest is maybe 18 inches under the surface. Yes, I know we are not all like Mike, but I do think there is some thing to be learned from that.
