I'm a competitive age-group triathlete (60-64) and I actually swim in competition using the catch-up technique. Despite my overall fitness, because I didn't come from a swimming background, I always struggled to find a form that would keep me in the mix without burning up too much energy in the water. I found that staying extended while using a strong two-beat kick really propelled me while remaining relatively calm and smooth. Also breathing became much more relaxed. I'm still not a top swimmer, but I now leave the water in much better shape, both physically and mentally.
@steeleronfire7030 Жыл бұрын
I recently came to the same conclusion for myself. I self taught myself to swim in the last 3 years. Made massive improvements but could never figure out my rhythm and timing. I noticed how efficient and relaxed I felt during catch up drill, so now I basically implement that as my stroke but just slightly earlier pull than true catch-up.

I'm a 68 yo engineer who has been swimming (just for exercise) for the past 10 years. As an engineer, I'm constantly trying to understand how to become more efficient at swimming. For free-style, I keep seeing people's hands entering the water too soon IMHO... and this video suggests the same thing IMHO. I think you should reach all the way forward before entering the water. My reasoning is that water offers much more resistance than air, so when the hand enters the water when it could still be in the air, it is terribly inefficient in my mind. Am I missing something?

When our arm is entering the water what should I do if I feel like I am hyper extended my arms
@robohippy Жыл бұрын
In watching the Olympics, for years, it seems that all of the freestylers, when their hands enter the water, they are almost directly on the center line, rather than at 11 and 1. I guess part of this is because of body rotation. Your hands would still be a shoulder width apart, but since your shoulders are at that 40 or so degree rotation, then they appear to enter the water closer to the center line. To this I would add that some teach to use a slight outsweep before starting your arm pull. Curious as to why this is taught for the fly, but not always with freestyle. I am very old school, and learned to have my hand entry very near the head, and to extend down and out, then use a big hour glass shaped pull. Don't do that any more. This was more in line with the old total immersion style of freestyle, which I don't see as being as efficient as what is now considered normal freestyle. It still surprises me how many enter way too close to their head rather than getting almost full extension before hand entry. Swimming over arm side stroke lets me see everything in the pool.....

@francophile92 Жыл бұрын
@@kedarshinde5756 nah bro. Remember oil and water don't mix. So even though the excess oil might come off, it stays on your body. I use almond oil and it works really well. Coconut oil is also reccomended, but it tends to be thicker and harder to apply. Just remember to avoid the bright sun if you have oil on your skin as that might lead to darkening. For outdoors you should use warerproof sunscreen. For indoors or low sun its ok. The smell of chlorine is still there after rubbing oil, but its less. Also you are less itchy. So rub that nice body!

“Fingertip drag” sounds like this will create a lot of drag and slow you down, is it not? I am not good at swim, just curious. 😅
@myswimpro Жыл бұрын
Hopefully just a little drag - since you just want to drag the tips of your fingers across the surface, not your whole hand! Yes, it will slow you down, but the focus should be on the high elbow recovery in midair rather than the water you're displacing with the drag portion of the drill. Hope that makes sense :)

@@neilriver which still doesn’t make “freestyle” a stroke. Freestyle is an event and was called freestyle because you are allowed to use any stroke in the event you like. The crawl happens to be the fastest stroke so that is the stroke everyone uses in the freestyle event.
