Iirc they took something like the paper rolls newspapers are made from. Those are pretty long stips and broad as a newspaper double page (usually the paper gets massprinted on and then cut). They rolled them out and then glued a dozen of them together to get this giant piece of paper

I'm in my 50s now, but when I was little, our teacher at Primary School told us that you could not fold a piece of paper over 7 times. It was apparently scientifically impossible. One kid brought a massive sheet of tissue paper in a roll. (Well it seemed massive to us tiny kids, it was probably just over a square metre.) Anyhoo, we took it in the hall and folded it up seven times. Then we attempted number 8. The piece was tiny and thick and we tried our best to fold it. we ran to our teacher excitedly yelling SIR SIR!!!! look we did it!!! And he looked at the paper and said it was not properly folded so it didn't count. Even though we failed, we were all convinced it would be possible with bigger paper. It's nice to see that confirmed.

I remember being told this as a kid and immediately knew it was incorrect. I proved it to myself by trying to fold a smaller piece of paper and it folded fewer times than a large one. It then was obvious that the bigger the ratio of area to thickness was the more folds one could make.

@@Cyril29a I had a teacher like that. He said earth worms aren't edible and I was the only kid who immediately knew it was incorrect because I was raised on a farm. I think the problem here lies in the absence of clear rules/requirements such as the ration between the thickness of the paper versus its area. surely a thin paper with a large area will be easier to fold compared to a thicker paper with the same area.
@JoaoPedro-mx4lx
@JoaoPedro-mx4lx 2 жыл бұрын
It's surely impossible to fold A4 sized common paper more than 7 times, unless you get to unrealistic nanometer-wide papers (maybe a graphene sheet could do the trick, I dunno). Their point was to show that it's possible to build a huge "sheet" of "paper" that can go beyond that limit.
@loganmoody1816
@loganmoody1816 2 жыл бұрын
you are correct, and even a theoretical indestructible "paper" with the thickness of 1 molecule would still hit an upper limit from the exponential rate that the thickness increases. Once its thicker than it is wide, true (at least 90% overlapping material) folding becomes impossible.

I think it has more to do with the size to thickness ratio. The greater the ratio the more folds possible. Once the fold (the rounded part) becomes too large in día as a ratio to the remain flat area the fold becomes impossible. We could therefore mathematically theorize a potential fold count based on paper size and thickness inputs.

I worked in big format printing for years and legit we would often have jobs that big and MUCH more intricate to pack and therefore fold. Moreover, it was all printed on vinyl, which is much heavier than paper, and often came with grommets all along the edges and straps welded in the middle to help installing them. We had jobs so big, we had to rent an empty warehouse just to be able to work on it properly, even though our building was already huge.

No matter the size of the paper, every fold takes 50% in area. Say this paper had 99ft length and 66 ft width. Every fold (vertical to horizontal) would take 50% of either side. 66 would become 33, then 99 would become 49.5. So technically, every fold increases the thickness by 50% (multiplying the thickness or height by 2 each fold) and that means, by scale, 1cm would become 128cm after seven folds. So these guys did a pretty good job busting this myth, as the thickness of that paper couldn't be penetrated without a pretty strong tool.

It's not about crushing it with a steamroller or making it big as a football field. It means that after the 7th roll, the paper molecular structure starts to crumble down. Yes, you can fold it. 8, 9 or 11 times. But after fold 7, you've broken it already cause the main fold is too heavy. Too little breaks to see, cause well, it's _huge_ It's more, you can keep "folding" it that way till you're folding a column of molecules bigger than the universe, but when it's broken, it's not busting anything.

I have questions about this. The myth, as I understood it, was fold a regular sheet of paper (8.5x11). The issue with what the myth busters did is they greatly increased the length and width, but I’m curious if there was a proportionate increase in the thickness of the paper. If they did not increase the thickness proportionately, I would imagine it would be much easier to fold something that has more surface area to use as leverage for applying more pressure than someone folding a traditional size. The myth as I understood it was about a traditional piece of paper, not all paper of any size.
