Watching Adam walk up to that car with a firesuit without gloves was a complete face palm moment
@DavidRichardson153

In fairness, the gloves might not necessarily have been able to fit for the lighter he used. It is kind of similar to how bomb suits are so massive and thick and yet the hands are still completely exposed, because when it comes to the delicate work of bomb disposal, any possible protective gloves would only get in the way and make it more difficult to actually defuse the bomb. Was this actually the case for Adam? I have no idea. I can only say that it was possible.

i find it funny they tried the first bumper test, on a Volvo XD notoriously known for taking every safety measure into account in that car's era.

Opps. You calculated the arrow depths based on a unarmored person. I'd be pretty sure they are referring to the penetration of the body.

We were horse archers when we settled in the Carpathian Basin (Late 900's ) . In the 15th hundreds we used general heavy cavalry and early hussars. Also King Matthias Corvinus more likely used mercenary crossbowmen and the time not bowmen.

Firing arrows while moving was actually not done usually cause you are likely to miss and you have a limited supply of arrows. Horse archers were effective because they could keep at a distance so you would move away and then shoot. Shooting while moving is something you only do when the enemy cavalry is chasing you and you can't find the time to stop.

Depending on how much you need the headlights I'm sure you could find your 740 headlights here in Australia. Should be still quite a few wreckers who would have 740 parts down Sydney. might even find new old stock. Most wreckers will do the work of finding the headlights for you.

Medieval Hungarian archers didn't rode horses for more penetration power. In fact they were firing their bows backwards! So in case of the myth it would be less penetration. They rode horses for tactical reasons, so when they were chased, they can still attack. Especially since they were very lightly armoured, while the people were chasing them had much better armour.

That bumper myth is so not busted, they weren't at all able to determine the force that would be created in that circumstance. They should have plugged up the safety valves and if necessary, reinforce the sides of the gas chamber so that they force a catastrophic failure. If you measure the force created from that, you could pack the bumper at the end with the equivalent amount of explosives in order to get an accurate worst case scenario. Considering that just one of them failing was enough to rip the bumper into pieces and STILL had enough power to fly 15 feet and injure someone, I feel that both failing simultaneously would totally have the force to launch it 50 feet.

Sure, if they kept going at it for a few months they might have able to get there in a replicable fashion.

Well, let me be your captain on this - they just f***ed up the whole archer myth completely here. Lets break down why. The formular for kinetic energy is: E = m * v² / 2 Energy = mass * speed² / 2 Lets take an example: 1 kg * 50 m/s² / 2 = 1250 Joule Now lets double the speed: 1 kg + 100 m/s² / 2 = 5000 Joule Now we have established the fact that the increase of speed doesn't result in a linear, but in an exponential increase of penetration potential. On top of that they just accidentally messed up the parameters of that myth by using modern, ultra light, high speed carbon fiber arrows (which go >300 fps or >200mph) and a modern compound crossbow setup. Problem with that is, that medieval war arrows were much, much heavier and shot from a medieval bow made from wood or special composite horse bows made from horn, they were much slower (typically way under 150 fps or 100mph) as well. So increasing the speed of these "slow" arrows by 40 miles per hour actually gave them drastically much more punch relatively to increasing the speed of the already super fast going modern arrows by "just" the same 40 mph. That myth is absolutely valid and I know this 100% for sure, because I have done exactly that from a horseback and with a proper, traditional composite horse bow in my youth - the results were absolutely devastating. *flies away*

Yet the other archers were not able to replicate it. "I pulled it off when I was young", while might be true, is still just an anecdote. If you want to run an experiment, you need to be able to control the variables, specially if you want consistency. Lastly. Dude, it's Mythbusters, these are not PhD papers. Enjoy the process.

Yes. It is an edutainment series with a set budget both resource and time wise, not a researcher team with a government grant. That's why the most important thing about their show is that they go over the methodologies, that way you can track the logic of their conclusion, even if they didn't spend the probable weeks of lab condition experimenting needed to get a peer reviewed paper out of it.
