I live in a country where moonshining is legal. My grandpa once caused an explosion. He was distilling in the basement, the alcohol fumes leaked out and filled up the room. When he went to check on the still he flicked the lightswitch, causing a spark and BOOM. The sudden pressure change blew open doors all the way to the attic, and my grandpa suffered second degree burns on his back. He swore off moonshining after that 😂

In Brazil, cars can be fueled with both gasoline (in Brazil, gasoline has 25% ethanol) and sugar cane ethanol. One of the problems that alcohol-powered cars had in the past was starting (as is the case in tests), especially starting at low temperatures, because ethanol has a higher ignition temperature. In modern cars, this is not so common as the engines are prepared for both fuels
@leoa4c
@leoa4c 28 күн бұрын
What's the price difference between the two fuels in Brazil?
@joaoibarra
@joaoibarra 28 күн бұрын
@@leoa4c the price may vary per region/city but the average is BRL 4,04 for ethanol and BRL 6,07 for gas. Ethanol has faster combustion, so it tends to yield 30% less than gasoline. To be worth it, the price difference also has to be at least 30%.
@leoa4c
@leoa4c 28 күн бұрын
@@joaoibarra The percentage in Europe is about 40-50%, perhaps because gasoline is more expensive to begin with, or the ethanol is relatively cheaper to produce (which I don't think so). I'm assuming that the minimum 30% is due to the higher fuel consumption of ethanol? Greetings from Portugal.

Currently in the United States, there are four states that allow the production of moonshine for personal consumption (Alaska, Arizona, Massachusetts, and Missouri). Additionally, North Dakota law permits the production of moonshine for personal consumption up to the federally legal amount, which is zero gallons; entailing that production of any amount is illegal.

One aspect that i din't catch if they talked about it is that alcohol like this often ahve glucose or sucrose in it: sugars. So with the heat of the engine, thos sugars are gonna acumulate and melt and then just plug shit up in there, well i suppose anyways

@@MugthrakaBrazil has ran straight Alcohol for vehicle fuel since the 70s. Main issue I believe was cold starting below about 59-60F/ 15C. Previously they used a small tank with petrol to start when cold then switched to the alcohol/ethanol tank. Later models heat the first amount of alcohol fuel to help it start easy.
@leoa4c
@leoa4c 28 күн бұрын
@@Mugthraka Why would it have sugars in it? During the distillation process, alcohol turns into vapor, it is cooled down into a liquid, and then stored. The sugars stay in the distillation vessel. That's the purpose of distillation: evaporating the alcohols while leaving substances with a higher boiling point behind (water, sugars, yeast, etc).

Flex engines (accept a range of petrol to ethanol ratio) have ECUs that detect the fuel composition and adjust the ignition timing. IIRC ethanol requires more fuel by volume and less pressure before ignition, so it moves the ignition forward. The more petrol you add to the fuel, the more it retards the ignition accordingly.

If using Jaso FD 2t oil, it won't do anything to the engine, even if it's a 4t engine. People add 2t oil in older diesels that aren't common rail injected, to lubricate the injection pump, as sulphur got removed from fuel (it worked as a lubricant) and the new diesel formulas destroy those injection pumps

Thats because the American farmers union have a lot of power, they grow corn to produce ethanol, using food producing areas to produce fuel, so they can make lots of money from the ethanol, and keep food prices higher! I use the E5 super unleaded, E10 rots the fuel lines of older cars, just so rich farmers can get richer.

they did moonshine as fuel all wrong .. identical cars doesn't mean identical performance and driving gas first, means he learned the track. and doing it on dirt? what the eff? you need to do this on actual racetrack, drive at least 30 minutes with same car on gas and get a race driver who can do consistent lap times. then completely drain the car from gas and put moonshine in it, then drive it for 30 minutes just to make sure all gas is out, then fill it up with moonshine so weight is same as with gas, then drive another 30 minutes and compare lap times. they had too many variables in the test, that was test of personal skill and difference in cars. i thought they were smarter to test. to make it even more consistent, they could just use dyno-run to measure how much power car has.

Moonshining is the national sport in Poland, so I think I have the right to suggest something. Explosions while making moonshine occur almost exclusively when the boiler is heated by an open fire (gas burner or traditional wood/coal stove). As for alcohol vapors in the air, they most often result from insufficient cooling of the vapors in the condenser coil. In normal devices, flowing cold water is needed for proper cooling - standing water in a regular tank (as in Adam's project) warms up over time and at some point stops condensing vapors. And when the right proportion of these vapors accumulates in the air, an explosion will occur. Most moonshiners remember this, but there are those who are too busy testing the quality of their moonshine to check whether the cold water is still cooling the condenser ;)

They said 200 proof, not 200 percent. 200 proof = 100% = pure ethanol with nothing else whatsoever in there. 200% (or 196%) is nonsense. And yes, 200 proof / 100% ethanol is absolutely a thing. You can obtain it from chemical supply companies. I believe they run the distilled alcohol through a reverse osmosis filter, possibly multiple times, to make it.
