I once supported the pagan origins fallacy wholeheartedly as a Baptist, oh then it even led me to disbelief and then to New Age But with continuation of study particularly in church history I’ve come to an understanding that Christian parallels and similarities with ancient pagan religions only goes to afirm God‘s grand plan in my opinion. Take zeitgeist in Astrotheology for example, instead of the claim that the Christian church simply copied why wouldn’t God align history in this way? Pagans often had bits and pieces of the truth but without full revelation.

My friends do not call me Chucko. Did you learn how to avoid answering questions at seminary school? Were you first your the class? I asked for names and dates Professor. We all know the context. The Roman empire was based on rape, murder, and plunder, The Church, citing the Bible, said be obedient to the authorities because they are "God's servants". The Church sanctioned the murder, rape, and pillage and added religious fanaticism to the heap. The Church and dictatorships embraced each other for centuries. The long struggle against savagery coincided with the people becoming less religious. When people were religious they watched passively as their moral leaders executed people in the town squares ( like Christians in the south watched lynchings). Jesus never had a Bible. The Church gave us Western Civilization. Our court system, hospitals, school systems, the University system...they were all Catholic institutions for many years before secular governments got involved with any of it. Did you know Catholics invented books? They invented the "codex" because it was easier to flip pages to look up scripture than reading scrolls. There is good religion and bad religion. There are bad people within good religion. Your facts are wrong. The Roman empire's laws were based on civil rights. Why was Paul's head chopped off and he was not crucified? He was a Roman citizen. You couldn't kill a Roman or you would get the death penalty. You make my point. Paul taught about obeying the laws when they were good. "Don't be accused of....." The bad things. Be a good citizen. Yet his preaching was against the law, it is why he was finally executed. He didn't say to rejoice in evil, but when the Pagan Govt does good it is God's will. You obviously don't know scripture. It would work better to understand something you want to accuse. The Church NEVER "sanctioned murder, rape, and pillage." This is utter dishonesty or ignorance: you may be listening to liars. Rape? You have no evidence. Put up or apologize. Pillage? What? Murder? Catholics never did. Anyone executed had a trial. The Church didn't carry out any executions either. The secular governments tried and executed. Never the Church. When someone was found guilty in a Catholic Court, the worst thing they would do was excommunicate the person. The king would then accuse them of a crime saying they were a danger to peace in his realm, the kings killed for many reasons. Spitting on a royal bush could get you the death penalty in England.

Semiramis (the Greekified version of her Assyrian name, Shammuramat) was an Assyrian queen, legendarily the wife of both Onnes and Ninus, who were Assyrian kings in the mists of Assyrian history (and some king lists). There was also a historical queen named Shammuramat, who was the wife of Shamshi-Adad V, king of the Neo-Assyrian Empire. The historical queen supposedly served as a military leader while acting as her son's regent. Tammuz was a Middle Eastern human, depending on your source, who was loved by Ishtar. But he died. So Ishtar went to visit Nergal in Hell and try to get Tammuz out, stripping herself of jewelry as a bribe at every gate on the way down into Hell, and was then held captive by Nergal. We don't have the end of the story, but apparently she never got Tammuz out. So every spring, there was a ceremony of women crying or cutting themselves to mourn for Tammuz. The custom also got attached to the later Middle Eastern human Adonis, who loved Aphrodite and died. Nimrod shows up in the Bible as a king in Shinar, but nobody has definitely connected him to any Mesopotamian god or king, although there have been several good tries at the king part. You know, you could look up these names on this international computer network we have.

Forgot to say that Tammuz was originally the Sumerian god Dumuzi or Dumuzid, who was the god of shepherds and the brother of Geshtinanna, goddess of agriculture; he may have been a historical king, or some historical kings may have been named after him. He competes with a farmer for the love of the goddess Inanna (no relation to his sister), and ends up trading his life for Inanna's and going to the underworld. Eventually he stays in the underworld half the year in the dried grass summer, when the fields grow, while his sister goes to the underworld in his place during the wet and fertile grass winter. This causes the seasons. He doesn't have anything to do with Shammuramat.

There's an easy way to tell if the Roman Catholic church is biblical or not, read and study the scriptures. Tradition does not supercede God's word which is our plum line for all truth.

Joe has some valid points in his message here but I am not convinced that he has factored in all of church history. He, like most teachers, hit on some of the truth but miss some of it as well. You point out two very important scriptures that would appear to contradict each other. One says we are justified by faith alone and the other says that we are not justified by faith alone. This breaks the laws of logic therefore it can't be true. Either you are misunderstanding one of verses in it's proper context or the bible is flawed and not truly the written word of God. Here's why: God is Logos/Logic and can't be logical and illogical at the same time. That would be like saying God can exist and not exist at the same time or that God can be good and evil at the same time. All of scripture must work together logically. If you read the whole chapter in the proper context and in light of what the rest of scripture says you will see that James is not saying that we have to work for our salvation but that if we have true saving faith we WILL obey God and do good works. It is the result of being truly justified not a requirement for gaining justification. God bless!

I quoted Martin Luther. He was a VERY flawed man, obviously mentally ill, and I then quoted scripture. James, in context, is perfectly summarized in vs 2:24. The "works" are in Christ, in His Love as He commanded: "in the perfect law of freedom" from James 1:25. Freedom from the Mosaic code, by Grace, through faith in Christ. Luther, conflated completing faith with works in Christ, as James teaches (which matches Paul) with doing Jewish Mitzvahs to be right with God. In Rom 3:28, Paul says you don't have to become a Jew & do the Mosaic Law. The Messiah has come. It is by Grace through faith. Abram is the example. His whole program was obediance in love of God; he was right with God this way before the law. In the first paragraph and the last paragraph of Romans there's a repeated phrase: "to bring about the obediance of faith." There you are. Luther was wrong. Obediance by the love of God shed abroad in our hearts, when completed, completed our faith. If the Protestant notion were true, our faith would complete our works, but the Bible says the opposite. Our works in Christ complete our faith.

Bible says this - For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith-and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God- 9 not by works, so that no one can boast. - Eph 2:8-9 You see that a person is considered righteous by what they do and not by faith alone. - James 2:24 Compare the two passages. They appear to contradict each other. We can't be justified by faith and not works AND be justified by faith and works at the same time. That's like saying you can't be saved by jumping off of a cliff but you must jump off of a cliff if you want to be saved. We have to look at all the scriptures to determine what both of these can mean. The only way to know we are understanding both correctly is if they both line up with each other as well as the rest of what scripture says. I was raised Roman Catholic and was in the church for over 30 years. I'm pretty familiar with the doctrine. The Catholic church teaches that to remain in God's grace you must do the sacraments/works. In short terms, you must work to remain justified before God. James 2 is not saying that. It is pointing out that there are two kinds of faith - Faith #1 - Belief that something is. Example: the demons believe the gospel is true but they don't trust God. They continue to rebel against him and they do no good works for Him. Faith #2 Belief that something is and putting your trust in it. Example: Christians believe the gospel and put their faith and trust in Christ and they obey him Only one of these faiths will justify us thus produce good works - #2

With your theology, the gates of Hades prevailed against Jesus' Church. I think not! I have a literary background, and what brought me back to the Catholic Church after being away from it for more than two decades was reading the Bible for myself after listening to about all the different types of Protestant preaching there is. The only place the words "faith alone" are in the whole Bible are in James 2:24 with the words "not by" right in front of them, yet it's your whole program. Romans tells us it is "to bring about the obedience of faith," Rom1:5, and 16:26, right at the beginning and the end like bookends. All seven sacraments are in the NT and we're commanded to DO them. Yet, you call them works that don't justify. What other disobedience do you think makes you right with God? How absurd! Your interpretation of James and Ephesians are both pat Protestantism and not literally or Biblically correct. James Chapter 2 has its climax in vs 24. Rahab is an example, like an epilogue, that gives an OT example of how one is right with God, or, justified, in the NT. It is ironclad. She was right with God WHEN she obeyed God and DID IT. Not before. Not by faith alone of any other sort. She did it and was justified, just like James says of Abraham. WHEN he went to sacrifice Isaac!. There are not two types of faith. There is not one word or sentence that says this; you must read it in. They both know the truth but in one example they refuse to obey God, in the other example they obey God and thereby it makes them right with Him or justified. If someone were to analyze the document with no theology on top of it, NO preconceived notions, that's what it says! The literature matches Catholic theology. The Protest notions are completely absent. The same is true everywhere! Rom 3:28. Luther wrote the word alone in in his first couple of translations (We hold that a person is justified by faith (alone) apart from the works of the law) but the other Prods fought him and they made him stop writing it in, but they've been READING it in ever since. Luther ADDED and REMOVED (seven books and initially more from the NT) from scripture!!! Now you're reading it in too. As I've said before, "the works of the law" is a Jewish expression. All religious Jews know this. It was even written multiple times in the Dead Sea Scrolls. It means doing mitzvahs to be right with God. Orthodox Jews still do it. They are right with God by the works of the law. Luther was wrong and you follow him. You may in unadmitted arrogance think you know better than he and follow Calvin, or some local Paster, but it is not what the early Church fathers, the Apostles, or Jesus taught. Paul said one is right with God by faith (Abraham is the example of someone's obedience), not by becoming a religious Jew. This is why he says if you try to be right by the law you'll no longer be under Grace. It is also a worker (doing mitzvahs) deserves his wage, but he who does not work (doesn't do mitzvahs), etc. Eph 1 Opens with God's plan of how he "destined us for adoption" "before the foundation of the world." Eph 2 Shows how Christ did this. "By Grace you have been saved" is the same tense in vs 8 as in vs 5. It is repetition and expansion with clarification. The tense is Past tense. There is also present tense and future tense in the Bible. All three tenses: You were saved, you're being saved, & you will be saved. Protestants conflate all tenses. Being saved past tense in this context is what Christ did for these Pagans. He then indwelled them with the spirit (being saved) and lifted them up into the heavens with Him, so that in the future he might show them...(will be saved). The point is, it is the Grace of salvation not a guarantee of the future. Predestination is not your knowledge. God is outside of time, you are not. You saying you "are saved" like it means all three tenses belies the fact that all three tenses are in the Bible! It is the sin of presumption. St. Paul admonished not to make this judgment; "...I don't even judge myself. I'm not aware of anything against me but I don't stand thereby acquitted. It is the Lord who judges me. So wait for him..." You ignore what the Bible actually says to uphold man-made Protestant, originally Lutheran, theology. Being saved means obedience in what you do, works in Christ are required to go to heaven. They complete your faith. If you do not live a pleasing life to the Lord in what you DO, you will be separated as a goat. Through Him, with Him, & in Him. In the unity of the Holy Spirit, all glory & honor are yours almighty father, forever, and ever, Amen. The Mass is 100% BIblical! I could go on about it too. In Eph 2:10. Do you read the word "should" as "optional?" The Protestant subtext has to be: You should live in the works he's laid out for you to do, but you don't have to! The Catholic read is that it's descriptive and imperative. "That you should live in them." Which read is Biblical?

The Bible was compiled (by the Catholic Church) to be read in Mass, and there are 5 scripture readings in Sunday Mass, 4 during weekday Mass (every day). This IS how the apostles taught. What you miss is everyone interprets scripture. It isn't that the Bible is wrong, but translators can mislead and people can misinterpret. The difference is, I hold to what the apostles taught us and you hold to what Protest-ant men taught you. What do you do with this verse: 2 Thes 2:15 "Therefore, brethren, stand fast; and hold the traditions which you have learned, whether by our word or our epistle." This is the differnce I stand firm and you don't. You have to ignore passages like this to believe you Protest-ant interpretations.

You can deny it all you want but catholicism has many pagan beginnings. Everything from the mother son relationship like with the queen of heaven and the ancient pagan godesses. Much if the pal vestments have pagan origins. One of the things that is a myth is the papacy. That is a mythical position that the bible does not teach. Why the King James Ken? A bible not first written until 1,600 years after Christ? Maybe you follow false prophets if we follow the very men the apostles personally taught and ordained to follow them, like Ignatius of Antioch, when you follow mere men who changed things over 1,500 years later? The bible says we are to be mediators for each other through Christ. Does St. Paul ask others to pray for him? Intercession through Christ! Are we not "surrounded by such a great cloud of witnesses" as the Letter to the Hebrews tells us? Doesn't Rev 5 & 8 show the angels and saints in heaven bringing our prayer requests to God's altar in heaven and they waft up like incense? It shows them interceding for us in heaven... Jesus taught us about humility and not putting anything over God. "Call no man on earth your teacher" Did Jesus not want us to call Peter, Paul, John or James our teachers? Call no man on earth your father. Not understanding rabbinic hyperbole, you could over literallize this and let mean-spirited people with bad intentions tell you to attack Jesus' Church by misusing it. So Jesus was breaking his commandment to "Honor your father..." The reality is, scripture tells us to call our priests "father" in 1 Cor 4 when St. Paul says: "You may have many guides to Christ but you don't have many fathers. I am your father, I have begotten you through the gospel. So imitate me." What better thing to call our priests in obedience? Should we obey scripture, the Church, and God, or, your misinterpretations? You tell me.

This is Christianity, the New Covenant. I am a Christian I am not a Jew and I follow Christ, not the rubrics of the Mosaic Law to be right with God. The bishop's point was something could have had a Pagan meaning in the past but if it doesn't now, but is a symbol of love and fidelity, it is not bad but good. St. Paul uses the example of eating meat to idols. It has no power over him, but if it is a scandal to weak people don't eat it in their presence to help them build up their faith. A wedding ring has not had a Pagan meaning for well over a thousand years, so if it scandalizes you, you must have nil faith.
