Thanks for your comment and your subscription. I believe one of the most beautiful things in the Catholic faith is how integrally philosophy, belief, and history come together. You not only gain "life-giving water flowing from your heart," but you'll find your life has more meaning and purpose. If you desire eternal treasure in heaven, not just worldly desires, you'll know the angels and saints, His Blessed Mother, and God himself watch over you, are with you in your heart, and guide you. When you do these things, it may well lead to greatness on earth where thousands show up to your funeral and you get great recognition, but you'll even take that in stride because the power and the goal is heaven. You'll grow in wisdom and discernment, and see the broad sweep of history as part of God's plan. In any case, it's important to understand others' points of view...so welcome.

The point is not that torture was mild or rare… it was that it was approved by the church AT ALL. Glad to hear it wasn’t as bad as we all though… but horrified to hear a modern educated person justify as much as he admits to. This is shocking to hear coming out of an American mouth. Shame on him, trying to say it wasn’t that bad… it was only a little torture and death… the other guys were worse. BTW - you can’t act like the Catholic State and the Catholic church had entirely different levels of culpability when the church investigates, tortures just a few, for only 15 minutes at a time to get a confession then turns them over to the state they know will kill them. The ethical gymnastics are terrifying. And this moral relativism is being “preached” in a Catholic Church in the 21st century… terrifying.

The problem isn't that Protestants did it too or did it more than Catholics. Nor is the problem that cynical state officials used the Catholic Church. The problem is that it was done at all. I thought Christianity was about treating people with respect and doing to others as you would have them do to you. Didn't Christ say this was summing up the law and the prophets? Real Christianity should diminish cruelty and intolerance not excuse it. If the priest thinks the inquisition was justified to save eternal souls then why aren't others free to act on that same assumption? How would he feel if Baptists used state power to torture him (just a little) so that he could see the error o his ways and influence others? After all, they would be acting to save his eternal soul.

One of the monstrous fallacies common among Catholic apologists is that they aren't critical enough of Catholic definitions of "heresy". These apologists emphasise the fact that the accused were appointed representation and could appeal to Rome. But such ostensible "due process" is only nominal and could only be valuable if the one accused of heresy enjoyed a societal status that accorded them the right to engage in dialogue on equal footing with their accusers. This would necessitate that they would be allowed to thoroughly question everything that was alleged to be heresy based on the standards of Catholic orthodoxy. If such rights were accorded the accused, then most if not all Catholic orthodoxies would have been found indefensible by Scripture. If ultimately the determination of whether one deserves to be killed depends on Catholic definitions of what constitutes "heresy", then no amount of "due process would matter. For instance if someone were to insist that they are not convinced that the host is transformed into anything other than bread, then it shouldn't matter that they were accorded a trial or privilege to have representation or appeal to Rome: the verdict would be the same as it would be unilaterally decided by arbitrary doctrines developed largely apart from Scriptural support.

@@jimmalloy7279 I don't see the connection between believing in transubstantiation, the doctrine that taking the "Eucharist" in the sinful state (whatever that means), and getting sick and dying. If that is really the case, then hordes of Christians outside the Catholic church ought to be getting sick or dying due to their being in a sinful state and taking part in the Eucharist - since most churches do not actually emphasise how important it is to avoid being in such a sinful state. In regards to your question about how disrespecting a symbol can kill anyone, I am not convinced that Paul was correct in regards to the claim that you referenced; and as I said elsewhere on this thread, Paul appears unreliable due to his contradicting the law in relation to many teachings. For instance, Paul contradicts Moses and James by saying that there is nothing inherently wrong with eating food sacrificed to idols.

It is Catholic and Orthodox doctrine worldwide. 2. "Paul appears unreliable..." You're a strange bird, I must say. You put the OT over the NT and judge it all by your own intellectual standards as if you're God! You speak with your own authority and treat the NT as if it's not the Word! I thought you referred to Jesus as "our Lord," am I wrong? You make many judgments with a Protestant bias, but saying "our Lord," is an extremely Catholic thing to say. Protestants would typically say "the Lord." Are you a Jew who doesn't believe Jesus is God? Christians NEVER judge Jesus or His apostles BY the OT. We read the Bible through the Book of Revelation backward. We see the Torah through Jesus. He spoke from the burning bush, He was in the pillar of fire, etc. Before Abraham was I AM! It seems you're a Messianic Jew because of your Protestant bias (they are Protestants theologically) and your viewing things through the OT; like the NT must obey the OT! This isn't even Christian. The NT reflects the OT and typologically and prophetically the OT points to the NT. Everything starts and ends with the truth of Jesus! He speaks the Word of God and the OT was for very primitive people who needed the law at that time "as their schoolmaster." Christians uphold "the spirit of the law (Love) not the letter of the law." COL 2:12-14 "You were buried with him in baptism, in which you were also raised with him through faith in the power of God, who raised him from the dead. And even when you were dead in transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, he brought you to life along with him, having forgiven us all our transgressions; obliterating the bond against us, with its ***legal claims, which was opposed to us, he also removed it from our midst, nailing it to the cross."***

The "Sacrifice" of the Scottish Highland Division by Winston Churchill in 1940, and covered up like a cat covers up shit by the BBC, which in truth should be the EBC English Broadcasting Corporation; to them, that was no sacrifice, after all, they were only Scots. The EBC made much of the "Dunkirk Miracle".. that evacuation of the British Army's, 300,000 men along with several thousand French troops. The evacuation began in the latter part of April 1940, and the Scottish Highlanders without food or ammunition were still fighting on June 8th, 1940, I know that for a fact, my family members were killed on June 8th.1940... That's the date I saw on the tombstones. So, as far as I'm concerned, you can take the word of the "EBC" and jamb it, where the Sun never shines. About thirty years ago, at a Highland Games, I saw Two Guys in a Pipe Band down from Canada, wearing the Seaforth Highlander's cap badge in their bonnets, I asked if they had been in the Seaforths; they said they had, I asked what platoon they had be with, it was a different one from that of my family. One of the guys told me he had a steel plate in his head, and the other had lost a lung. They went on to tell, of the wonderful medical treatment they had received at the hands of the German's; one said, They treated us like heroes, as though we were family, and I thought; well, that's a damned sight more than Churchill and the EBC thought of you.

Near the end of June, 1940, the BBC, broadcast the wonders of the successful evacuation of the British Army, along with many French troops at Dunkirk, an evacuation that began in the latter part of April. No mention was, or EVER has been made by the BBC, of the Scottish Highland Division, consisting of.. The Gordon Highlanders, Cameron Highlanders, Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, Seaforth Highlanders, ( 42nd Highlanders-the Black Watch ) and the Highland Light Infantry left behind to halt Rommel ....and let the rest of the British Army escape ..... . It was Infantry against tanks. The Highland Division was still fighting in June, it was decimated, my family members among them, either killed, or wounded.. The notifications of deaths and missing in action, were being handed out like like play-bills in LATE June..... and... SCOTLAND WEPT. Bet you'll never, ever hear of THAT from the BBC. @@2growdaily181 I agree every confession has committed atrocities. That's true. And I completely agree that political power is dangerous. But I disagree with those who take the worst episodes of the history of the church without taking into consideration the best ones, and with no historical context. The inquisition committed terrible atrocities, but at the same time the Spanish empire was the first one to discuss their right to conquer native populations. Many priests went to America to protect and educate natives and for the first time laws were made to protect native communities. Of course, those laws weren't respected in many occasions and abuses were common, but a myth was created that still survives, and that's what we call the black legend. It is an unfair portray of the Church and Spain based on exaggerations and taking only the worst episodes of our history. Many historians have replied to that myth but sadly it still remains, specially in the protestant and Anglo-Saxon countries. That's all the point.

It was neccesary to portray the spanish Inquisition as something worse than anything seen before. That is pure propaganda, It has nothing to do with historical facts.
