Transformers Takara Tomy Masterpiece Sunstreaker

This was the first of very few times I upgraded my figure. Sunsurge was a nice stand in, but Takara absolutely wiped the floor with him. I kind of wanted to stick with what I already owned, partially I think because I was so happy that Badcube finally had a really decent figure. In the end, it was a no brainer. I'd have shelled out another $150 for this guy, he's one of my favorite Tranformers, and one of the best figures Takara ever put out. I'd have to imagine that Bobby has this one by now, no way he's still rocking Sunsurge with all of his amazing displays.

Takara has stepped up their game with their most recent MP releases. I think they finally realized that customers are willing to pay for better quality overall. If not, fans will buy from manufacturers that are willing to appease their sensibilities. Something else to point out is the weight of this figure vs. earlier MP releases. Most MP cars clock in between 4.2oz (MP Tracks) and 4.7 (MP Datsuns). Sunstreaker weighs in at about 5.7oz.

This is one that grew on me substantially. I bought him because of the low price I could get it for at the time, transformed him like twice and put it on the shelf.little by little I noticed myself picking him up, posing/fiddling around with him more and more. Much more than bots I thought were all sorts of amazing right out the box that ended up expensive dust collectors. Because of that I rank him higher than most people would. Another example but much more drastic would be hot rodimus. I hated that f***ing thing like most people but he got more play than most of my mps so I just had to admit to myself one day that I actually love him despite all his faults. Like a chunky girl none of your friends know you're sneaking off to fool around with everyday after school back when you were young enough to buy into thinking what other people thought mattered. Soundwave is still the mp pinnacle for me, at least aesthetically at this point but this does give me a level of acceptance and hope for where the line currently is and where it's going

The arm transformation is slick, instead of using the old method where you need to open a panel and flip out the hand, that is great! I can withstand the backpack, however I really don’t like the butt flap, it annoys me even more that it has a autobot logo on it, autobot my a**! This is the first masterpiece I am going to get since this is the most anime accurate figure, the yellow is spot on, fantastic articulation, and it is not that big so my parents won’t notice it! Great review as always Bobby!

Hello, I just want to point out, the backpack is a Jetpack, the butt-flap is a "Aileron/elevator-Flap",.... and at the TOP of the back pack [front of the backpack if Sunstreaker is in superman flying style...] there are the IN-TAKES....and at the BOTTOm of the backpack there are two inverted cones with turbines-like exhausts holes, [Actually the entire backpack is shaped like a turbine,] also the car engine cooling grids are now strategically positioned in the same way for the turbine. ...that remind me the episode in which PRIME ask SIDESWIPE to give him his jet pack, not to Sunstreaker of course, cause he cannot detach it from his back because is part of his transformation, and Prime Might know that....lol please also keep in mind that now the backpack in co-opp with the jet- propulsion devises on the shoulders [ again when he is flying with the arms forward] makes a lot more sense, after all his cybertron original mode could have been a BLUR kind of car, who also has the same similarities in the shoulders and transformation.-----------retired engineer.

My favorite part of the review is your explanation of why you are staying with Sunsurge. I think most collectors wrestle with these very same thoughts on most purchases. My comfort level for a standard MP carbot is 100$. Through the magic of ebay bucks and a gift card, I will only have around 50$ out-of-pocket cost for this guy. Now all a have to do is wait, which is not easy after seeing your review. Thank you sir for the great review and I am really digging the new intro.....

man...what an awesome solid figure!! Seems like one of the most solid. Had to wait for the KO (man, can't do original for the price) and finally got it and transformed it today. Mine is excellent. And I think it cleans up very well. Use to love the KO Vs. comparison vids...by Rocketpunch (?). I dont' see one though

First off, Smoke & Mirrors is incredible. Thought it would be hard to best "Hungry", but this song is definitely a banger. As for the review - so on point. I got mine for $74 w/free shipping, which wasn't bad. But, much like Megatron, he's great, but I felt like I didn't get my monies worth. I'm not liking the lack of accessories for that price, and he really doesn't blow away Sunsurge. I don't know, maybe I'm just spoiled by Storm Collectibles since that was also in this box. I like the figure, but that heavy toon looking face bothers me, it doesn't go with MP Sidewipe at all IMO. I wish they had added a couple more silver toy-accurate faces to better match with sideswipe.

I can't recall having ever had such a hard time making a collecting decision. I'm sitting here staring at the side-by-side shot of Sunsurge and MP-39 at the end. (Thanks for the comparison discussion.) I'm currently leaning a bit toward replacing my Sunsurge, since MP-39 just looks so much better, especially the legs and feet. Sunsurge might arguably match the aesthetic of the original MP-12 a bit better, though. (If I do upgrade, my MP-39 better hold his gun. Figures having trouble holding their weapons is a definite pet peeve of mine.)

I was lucky to sell Surge for $85 after this was announced, and scored him for around that amount from Anime Export shipped. I paid $90 for Sunsurge, so I figure I'm out 5 bucks. It's an interesting discussion though, which characters in one's collection you just don't care enough about to have the best version possible--"okay" is good enough. I just couldn't hang with the BC feet---seems like a silly thing to stick on, but man every time I saw it on the shelf it was all I could see. Saw the Takara feet and I pre-ordered so fast I think I made a wormhole. Thanks for the review!

I still really enjoy Sunsurge and the improvements in the Takara don't seem to be worth the increased price over BadCube. I have ordered due to finding it for a price point that was better, but I may leave it in car mode on my shelf. Always appreciate your reviews. In my opinion the Takara Suntreaker demolishes the Bad Cube one both objectively and subjectively. Objectively it's better engineered (transformation and articulation wise) both modes are closer to the original cartoon design, it has better gimmicks, sculpt, proportions, paint and accessories. Subjectively, when you have them standing next to each other the Takara one looks better and it does so in both modes. The Bad Cube isn't bad but the Takara is in different league. I'm not saying that ppl should trade one for the other but when it's time to choose, if they don't have either one, they should go for the Takara MP-39 Sunstreaker, it's well worth the extra 20USD. I feel the same way as you do in your final thoughts. I love my Sunsurge. It's still a great MP 3P Sunstreaker. I also really like Spinout. My copy is rather decent, and with the mods, pretty good! I'm still getting MP-39 Streaker because the original was my first G1 toy. He's also my channel mascot. And there isn't anything wrong with owning 3 versions of him on my MP shelf. :D. I don't care for the toon-centric look of the new MP's, which is why I still prefer Sunsurge as my official representation.

Excellent review! I have to say that compared to Badcube's version as you mentioned there is not enough incentive to upgrade. I love some of the engineering tricks this figure has and while normally i don't mind backpacks, Takara's Sunstreaker's backpack detracts from the overall figure. I also feel like there are too many gaps in his overall bot mode, like above the waist swivel and around his neck area it's like the head is just floating. I guess I am nitpicking and while i could use a Sunstreaker in my collection, I might go with sunsurge since its way cheaper. Keep up the good work Bobby! God bless you and your family!

When i bought Sunsurge, he was actually more expensive than MP-39 is now. I still bought MP-39 even tho I'm happy with Sunsurge (I liked the mold enough to buy the red one, sentinel blaze) since I don't go for the "The one and only true Representation" collection... I have so many Optimus Prime variants that they almost form an army (Meggy's worst nightmare), so I can't justify not getting MP-39 just because I already have Sunsurge ;)

Things I like: The way the feet narrow down in transformation; The new hands (I don't like the amount of tension that is exerted on the fixed thumbs of other MPs when you put the gun in); The TR Topspin inspired arm transformation; The inclusion of a scale accurate second alt. mode (I don't need it, but was super-impressed that they did it). Things I don't mind: The butt flap and the backpack (much more compact than the promo images made them seem) Things I don't know how I feel about: The faux chest (normally, I really dislike these. But is this one really faux? Certainly not completely...) Things I don't like: The price (more than double typical MP prices in the UK - although Sideswipe was more expensive than others, he wasn't this much more so the price isn't fully explained by the license); The upper body looks a bit messy; There is a general trend towards over-complication and ugly transformation seams in alt. mode to go, for me, too far on toon accuracy in bot mode. I do think it's a big improvement over Sunsurge. Sculpt-wise, my Spinout is more what I want for this character (shame about the quality). Overall, not willing to pay the price for this and, honestly, starting to question my decisions to wait for official MPs of characters like Trailbreaker and Hound...

Great review as always. That butt flap/hood used to bother me as well because it always got caught in the spoilers. But you can actually tab that into his butt (it will click in tightly) and it will give you more clearance for waist swivel without the need to use the ab crunch. It is still unsightly though, and that upside-down autobot symbol reminds me of Starscream's upside down decepticon symbol.

Seeing this guy next to Sideswipe kills it for me - they look like they're from different lines. Always the big risk with taking years to release figures. The MP line really needed to get the figures out Binaltech fast. I passed on Sunsurge but he fits in looks wise so much better with the rest of the Autobot MP bots - now that he's going cheap on the aftermarket I may pick him up.

Great review. Me personally, I agree with you on the argument of swapping them out. I have Sunsurge & I like him & plan on keeping him as my Sunstreaker. There's just too many new 3rd party bots coming out that I'd rather spend my money on. Plus the transformation on Sunstreaker appears to be more of a cluster than Sunsurge.

Now that I've seen the engineering, the features, the added gimmicks (that don't impinge on anything else!), I think the higher price compared to the other Autobot Cars is, amazingly, justified. I love Sunsurge, but this still blows it out of the water, and that's no insult to Badcube's figure - if they found a way to fold that butt flap out of the way, I'd say it's a 99/100, a near-perfect.

Things to like: he certainly captures that mature look you we're talking about a lot better than most of the recent official MPs, thanks to lots of pleasing details and the extra care they put into a realistic alt mode. That's probably the advantage of having to deal with an actual car manufacturer. Great face sculpt, but i wish they had included a toy head (not really digging his simplified "horns"). Things I don't like: he looks extremely busy in the shoulder area, almost to MP Megatron's level, and people who were complaining about FT Koot's backpack should really be screaming bloody murder about this one. However, all said and done, it's the MP which brought me back into the official line all the way since Hot Rod.

I think the neatest engineering trick is the way both he and side swipe look identical in car mode but transform into very different looking robots... Heres my dilemma. I got this guy and hes amazing, I love it but the price was absurd! I used some of those tricks of the trade you mentioned and got hit for about $85, I'd never get this guy at full American retail.The direction they are taking official MP really bums me out, with soaring prices and minimal detailing but, hey, at least they only release like 2 or 3 a year....... Nice review. I will keep my Sunstreaker. I can manipulate his feet that they don't look that separated outwards to his legs and I can manipulate his shoulders that the arms are leaning more towards his torso. The MP versions face is a better representation of the cartoon, but it looks kinda disturbing to me and lacks character. That's what Badcube does the best to me: to give their bots character just by the sculpt and expression of the faces. That's why I chose badcube's version of Trailbreaker all over the others.

I am right there with you. Better than badcube but how much better? The bells and whistles on car mode aren’t for me and I am fine with sunsurge. I wish we were as critical on Takara as we are on 3rd party. Great review as always

Review was ok..i feel like you didn't give enough on articulation, mp39 kills any bot on his balance and artiulation, if you move the wing in an angle you can get better waist movement, my only gripe with mp39 is the lack of rubber tires..
