When it comes to those really nasty surgeons, I remind myself that they don't pay my wage. I don't respect titles, I respect people. If they want to make the case harder for the team, they are only hurting the patient. We are all there for the patient, not for the surgeon. The difficult surgeons are the ones that don't realize that, thinking they are the most important person in the room (the patient is). Get through the case and voice that to them or management. It does take thick skin to work in the OR, and some days are so much harder than others, but it is a fullfilling profession and it pays well for the amount of education required. It might sound counterproductive, but a short walk after getting off for the day can help the feet and legs from aching and being sore.

As a surgical tech , I can say first hand that these surgeons will make you want to quit your job and find another career . Like she said I ignore it because if I say something it will come out very mean and they are quick to tell the nurses on you but nobody ever tells on them because they are the “surgeon”. If this ever happens just tell your charge nurse , most of the time they will understand and agree. Just always keep in mind , that at one time everybody working there was a new worker and nervous . Everybody

I have most definitely told my boss if a doc was acting like an a$$! I worked in the OR for 16 years as a RN. The majority of our docs were great. There's always going to be a few that can be petty. If a doc was riding a tech or RN needlessly, I would either personally say something to them, or report it to my boss, depending on the doc and situation.

I've checked a few surgeons in my time. I've been a ST/First Assist for 20+ years. However, this was early in my career. The younger generation of surgeons are a lot more chill. Believe me when I say that I have no issues with giving that same energy right back. Many surgeons talk shit because it goes unchecked. Not me though. Talk crazy if you want to. 🤨

I am a baby ST (I just got my certification 6/28/23) and I can say that my very first week of my externship, I got a taste of just how bad the surgeons can be. I actually cried and it took soooo many people to talk me into continuing. I saw it through, though, but honestly, I don't know if this is the field for me. Mostly because of the surgeons. It's also all the standing. My feet and legs got used to it, but I had such bad back pain during clinical rotation that I had to do physical therapy. Thinking of going back to school, but man, I need the job.

Surgical Tech programs talk about all the pros so you are interested in applying to their program. You being real about the 3 cons: being submissive to surgeon; long standing hours; holding retractor still. I am so thankful for you pointing out the cons. I’ve been reading a lot about different surgical tech programs and you’re the first one to be so honest and I deeply appreciate it. It gives me a better idea about the profession before I decide to invest my time and tuition money towards it. Please make more videos about surg tech. I am sending you a virtual thank you hug! 🤗 ❤ 🤗

Ok I just became a surgical tech recently, I’m working in a hospital setting and it’s really not the doctors that are all that bad it’s the nurses . They are so nasty!! They know I’m new and refuse to show me anything, they are like a bunch of high school girls just gossiping and being all in little clicks. I would of never thought in a million years that went on but it does, so childish. I honestly don’t know whether or not I want to continue with it. If I do I don’t want to stay where I’m at.

Hey, twenty-one years in it tech. Dang I feel old. Surgeons are people, they sometimes forget other people are too. Some of them may not hear you when you ask a question, so sometimes the lack of acknowledgement is just them being half deaf. Get really good shoes and make sure they have a steel toe. I speak from experience when I say scalpels love falling blade end down. And don't forget to stretch and roll your ankles through the alphabet. If you don't have any, invest in compression stockings. Do NOT sit!!!! If the case is not a sitting case, don't sit. I don't know who is spreading the, "it doesn't matter" crap. It does. It's AORN standard for a reason. Keeping potential infection down.

Well, I can say as a formal surgical tech you have to have thick skin. I got cussed at by a surgeon and burst out laughing. Because it wasn't my fault but we became to have a great relationship. He started asking me about his cases. They didn't get out of line too much I guess because im a guy. First of all, we here to help them. These days you can leave and find a job in the field quickly because ticks are not taking their crap. I saw one doctor sexually touching on women and they want to say anything. But learn the case, go into the room, and take notes, on the instruments. Learn what goes on the mayo for a case and if you don't know the case just wait till they ask but learn and anticipate what's next. Blade, bovie, next retractor, and keep up. If you have a good team it's cool but if everyone is out to get one another it's not fun.

People say we don’t get breaks but honestly out of every job I’ve ever had my new job as a surgical tech we get breaks atleast every 2 hours . You rarely ever finish a surgery over 3 hours without someone giving you a break . The only bad thing is not being able to go when you want too which is kinda Normal for most jobs . What are the tasks when you aren’t doing the retracting/camera work? Also, could you make a video or just answer through comment about what you had to learn in school that you don’t actually use in the field? (Current surgical tech student)
@shikapooh2287
@shikapooh2287 Жыл бұрын
What you do during any procedure really depends on the patient, the type of procedure, and the surgeon. Intraoperatively, you will be preparing, anticipating, and passing instruments and supplies. You will also have to count instruments and supplies (what those items are depends on the type of procedure being performed. The basics are major/minor instrument trays, sponges, needles, blades, hypos, scratch pads ect.) You will have to maintain a sterile field by ensuring that you and all other sterile surgical team members use proper aseptic technique and that no one (sterile or unsterile) contaminates the sterile field, you will have to handle and properly label specimens and medications (such as lidocaine), you may have to put instruments together or measure bones for proper implant sizing, you may have to irrigate wounds or hold the suction for smoke plume evacuation, and you may have to prepare stuff like bone cement. This description does not include pre or post-op duties. Really, no two procedures are exactly alike so it best to just learn the basics and keep an open mind lol. Seriously, though, keep a notebook, take notes when you can, be willing to learn, and ask questions. It's going to be tough, but try to see it through. However, don't be ashamed if at some point you realize that this isn't the best field for you.
@shikapooh2287
@shikapooh2287 Жыл бұрын
Oh, and it's probably more likely that you will be doing more things in the real world than you learn in school more so than not doing something you did learn in school. School is really just there to teach you the basics of aseptic technique, setting up the OR, how to do a proper hand scrub, what PPE is and how to don it using sterile technique, and to help you pass your certification exam. It's during your clinical rotation as a surgical tech student that you will actually learn the skills that it takes to be successful in this field of work.
