Another great way to tell if you have Jet A mixed in with your 100LL is to pour a little bit out on a paper towel. If it’s pure 100LL it will dry within a few minutes and there will be no residue, but if there’s Jet A mixed in it will leave an oily residue on the paper towel which will not evaporate. Saw this in an AOPA ASI video the other day :)

another way i beleive is rub it on your hand and you'll get that oily feeling on your fingers if there's jet-a in there

"How are you enjoying the 31-day safer pilot challenge?" Well, Jason, it was fine until you did the side-by-side with the 100LL/Jet-A mixture. I had no idea how similar they were! Off to live in a constant state of paranoia now...

They're not similar if you smell. Or do a paper towel test. The nozzles are different between the fuel types. It would take a combination of a fueler who was very determined to make a mistake, a pilot who didn't ensure the correct refueling of their A/C, plus failing to detect it on the preflight. A fairly unlikely set of compounding errors compared to the real killers...

Soak a corner of a paper towel in the fuel. Jet A will leave a visible ring when the avgas evaporates.

My 1st time ever seeing Jet A fuel. A very light straw color compared to regular pump motor fuel at the local gas station. Jet A and 100LL mix like gasoline and diesel, only it's the diesel that has a bluish green tint to it. Back before MA mandated a percentage of biofuel in kerosene and dying it red, it had a very light straw color just like Jet A, maybe even lighter. Interesting stuff nonetheless. As a mechanic, I'm constantly elbow deep in regular automotive pump gas. I get many, many examples of water settling to the bottom, thanks to the mandated ethanol content these days. It soaks up moisture like a sponge. Here in MA, we can't get any ethanol-free fuel at any pump anywhere in the state. God forbid they let our outdoor power equipment run correctly, and make it through storage without a carb clean. But I digress! Great vid, Jason - much appreciated.

Something that happened to me that you should be looking for. Debris. I fueld up once, right after another plane left the fuel pit. I fueled up, shot a sample into my test bottle and there was a bunch of tiny gravel. Out of concern I called the service number on the fuel pump and the owner told me it happens often. Guys will push off spin the plane, fire up and blast gravel. Causing gravel to blow into the open nozzle. At that point I was glad I was taught to sample fuel prior to putting it in the tanks. I could only imagine that it wouldn’t take much to plug up a carb jet, if the sump screen didn’t catch it.

I've seen barely visible particles cause motorcycles, and all kinds of outdoor power equipment to become a no-start. The idle passage is the smallest of them all, and is needed for starting. Very easily choked off.

I've always said, "Nothing like the spell of Jet-A in the morning!" Worked flight line with F-111's at Mountain Home AFB in early 70's. Spent my career as software engineer on AFB with ability to catch a quick smell from the planes on nearby runway. Actually, it had not been pointed out to me that it would always be blue! I have been looking mainly for water. I will now put against the white of the plane. Thanks!

At 1:19, I would have said that the cup on the right was the 100-LL, because it's a lot bluer than the other two. Was that deliberate? Were you trying to illustrate how much the background matters? Or did you just not think about the background when you planned your camera angles?

If you look at the color of light coming through each glass straight 100LL vs 100LL mixed with JETA there is a clear difference in color visible in the light coming through the glass and shining on the elevator. The light from the 100LL mixed with JET A looks yellow while the straight 100LL looks blue. While you should know by heart the color of 100LL looking at the color of light passing through it is another way to tell if you might have a fuel mix-up.

I was waiting for it, the sniff test. I was hoping you were going to do it. About 15 years ago I smelled it on all of my 152s. The ramp guy finally admitted to putting in 4 gallons of it before he realized what he had done. And he did not say anything, when I sumped The tank smell like diesel and I knew what had happened.

One would hope that the fuel suppliers make no mistakes when THEY load or transfer the fuel,... 'cause it says 100LL might not be true or JET A......I found a regular gas station that loaded some Premium gas into the Diesel ground tank............ and I bought a full load of Diesel on an early morning fuel up......... just glad I was not in the air when I switched tanks........Always thought that the producers should have an additive that when cross mixed would turn a really odd color...... like the red + green make's yellow........ just my view. Always good to have a heads up reminder video,... Thank You.

After 22 years as an ABF (Aviation Boatswains Mate Fuels) in the Navy I can say without a doubt I like the smell of 100LL better than JP-5 which is the same color and smell as Jet-A with a higher flash point. That smell is difficult to get out of your clothes.

I don't think they're engineered to do that as far as I know. It will happen naturally with enough of either mixed in. Same with gasoline and diesel. Diesel has more of a greenish tint mixed with the blue.
