Thanks so much for this video! I just wanted to provide some context on the handheld versions of N+: in order to support ourselves while we were making N+ XBLA, we licensed the handheld rights to Atari. Unfortunately, despite promises to the contrary, the developer didn't listen to our input/feedback, and as a result they are (in our opinion) inferior versions that don't feel right. Originally we weren't supposed to work on them at all, however once we saw how terrible the levels were, we realized that we'd have to make all of the levels ourselves or else fans would be really disappointed... this tripled our level design workload and was incredibly stressful. Anyway, our games aren't for everyone and tend to fly under the radar, so it's nice to be reminded that there are still plenty of people out there who appreciate them.
@skippy75522 ай бұрын
Yo the man, the myth! Hope you don't think I edited you too dirty. I was curious about the handheld games because they never came up in the talks. Did they just kinda make you guys creative leads, or just more of as consultants and do their own thing? The way those games turned out it really feels like they kinda just to the ball and ran with it.
@raiganburns81542 ай бұрын
@@skippy7552 No worries, actually I had completely forgotten about that talk. :) I don't remember what our official position was; we were supposed to consult with the developer regularly, but after our first few visits we realized that they weren't listening at all to any of our feedback (because they didn't have to, since it wasn't really in the contract). We just didn't have any leverage or control over the direction they took, aside from making replacement levels! To be fair even N+ XBLA doesn't feel perfect, but that's more a function of lack of time. This was one of the reasons we really wanted to make N++, so that we could finally get it right. :)

I've spent hundreds of hours in N, (I loved the DDA levels), and the only reason I haven't done the same in N++ is because I simply didn't know it existed. Man this video was such a fun ride and a trip to nostalgia. While I never had a console so I can't count N+, I really enjoyed N v 1.4 during the Flash years from elementary to high school (and its Nreality modded version that allowed custom backgrounds and even more gameplay features!!) and when N++ came out it was fascinating to see how much effort they put into having color schemes, background music, new enemies and levels and redefine what they started all those years ago. Just glad there's enough viewers and commenters on this vid showing a good amount of people having had fun with N too on their younger years. Just want to add that personally, N v. 1.4 will remain peak to me -- if only at least due to Nreality existing on how even more moddable levels and your ninja is in a way that N++ doesn't do, plus how user created level maps are easier to make and copy, as they are basically long strings of text you can save to a text file without needing online integration whatsoever (and Numa did exist online where you can share maps if you wanted to). Not to mention all the art people have done with the levels, some of which were shown here to be fair.

As someone who has been playing any form of N since around 2006, I just wanted to say this video is fantastic!! Within my time play playing the original flash game, I was able to interact with some awesome community members and make some awesome memories from it. I didn't start playing N++ until around mid 2019, but it sure had me in its clutches when I got back into it. I spent the majority of 2020 and 2021 highscoring and such, but I didn't get into it once I started going for 100% after meeting up IRL with golfkid (another community member who has been in it as long as me) for co-op in late 2021. Once I saw the progress we made, that's when I knew 100% was within my reach as I never thought it would be something I would achieve due to the amount of stuff required for it. It wasn't until June 2022 that I achieved it and now I look back on it feeling glad I've done it (plus the devs will send a nice certificate once you achieve it). Going for 100% really cemented this game series as one of my favorites and I'm happy to have been involved with the community. This game is more of a way to kill some time nowadays, but it is still a fun time for me (no matter how long I play for). Finally, the part of the video where you're up late into the night really hits home for me. This happened multiple times to me when highscoring to get the top spot and even when I was going for 100% on some levels (especially some of the secrets/secret levels). Thank you for making this video as it sure did make me walk down memory lane!! :)

Found N+ by chance on Andkon (I think? It's been a minute) and binged the shit out of it. A++ game, definitely lived up to the title of worlds best platformer. It knows exactly what it wants to do, executes it flawlessly, and then moonwalks off stage because it's just that good.

the original N game survived every move to a new computer since 2005. Still have a copy on an old MP3 player I used in school. AND I F***** DIDNT KNOW THERE ARE SEQUELS! Thanks so much for the video, I'll soon be addicted one more time! :'D

Incredibly slick editing and pacing. Fits the game itself down to a tee and makes the video all that more engaging. Much love

I'm happy knowing that there are more people playing and commenting on N++ and the trilogy in general, these games are just *perfect* Sometimes I think I'm the only Brazilian who actively plays ;-

When I was younger me and my brother, mother, and father would all play N+ and later N++ co-op levels together so this series is so dear to me. The great thing about co-op levels in these were every level is designed for 2 players to beat but with 4 players, it would stick 2 players in each section that was designed for 1 player. This basically meant me and my brother would always try to pair up with one parent each to spread the skill and our parents would struggle but still feel like they were succeeding because we were passing levels. I really miss it and playing it with my family, maybe I’ll try to organize it again when I go home for Christmas this year.

This game blew my mind as a kid. It was probably the first game I remember where I noticed how good it felt to play. I bet it still holds up

God I loved this game, beating all 4000+ levels took hundreds of hours and it literally reached a point where, like you said in the video, I'd sit in stasis playing this game in the middle of night doing nothing but taking it all in. I think this is the game I played when I realized I actually do experience dissociation lmfao

A gem of platform I found recently is Revita - wonderful aesthetics, banging soundtrack and some creative design choices around level setup, scaling, etc. Just commenting to put on your radar since it seems to jive well with this sorta thing.

Speaking as someone born in the early 90s, N is, to my mind, one of the icons of the golden age of Flash games. It's up there with Submachine as one of *the* games of that era, alongside Fancy Pants Adventure and Samorost.

Man, this awoke something primal in me. A good portion of my childhood was spent playing the original. I had no idea even N+ existed. The only other game that had movement that felt this good was worms armageddon ninja rope levels.

Great vid! I was never too into platformers but was aware of N and its releases and it always looked interesting. Your vid showed me it had way more to offer than I thought

Reminds me of Lode Runner during the Apple IIc days. I’m old but it and Captain Goodnight were my favorites when I was 5 or 6 years old. Still love its aesthetics and gameplay. We had so many games on those 5.25 inch floppy discs. Lollipop Dragon, Chem Lab, Swash Buckler, Aztec…all kinds of shit. Drop them in, get your fix, get out and go play outside. It was great… Damn, I almost forgot about joysticks altogether, such a different gameplay experience.
