Hello Mike. I've been watching your channel for some time now, and finally something Japanese! I've been around model railways all of my life, starting in OO with a layout in the garden. My father got me in to N when I was young as I could play inside in the winter and get so much more on a board! 40 years later and I am the chairman of my local club and the only one that models Japanese railways! More colourful and exciting than our native stuff in my opinion (before I get shot down by trolls). Well done Mike.😊

Thanks for the support. Japanese N is so reliable and cheap, UK people can get upset about that but it's true. N just gives you so much more room, once you realise that OO is to big you can't un see it lol. Which club is that please?

Fantastic update! You really have managed to capture the Japanese ‘feel’ of a rail system. You could probably put more residential homes quite close to the rail (they don’t really seem to have any issues with how close the homes are to the tracks). The background is ‘Asian’ and works for a Japanese city. Loving how this looks and the paddy fields are amazing!

Well, I am one of those still watching. As usual, the right balance: plenty to look at but without clutter. I have always thought UK trains of the mid to late 20th century had a pleasing character. That visual appeal is nowadays to be found in many of the more stylish trains of Japan - both locomotives and multiple units. Kato captures this style and allies it to unparalleled reliability. Combining that with your infectious enthusiasm does us all a power of good!

This hobby needs as much support with a variety of interests. I am please to see the younger generation taking up the hobby and I would strongly advise them to incorporate other hobbies into this one. As for this layout, I'm enjoying it and your channel

I'm going to do a Japanese Shinkansen layout. I picked up Kato's Shinkasen starter set. It's only available in Japan for some reason. It comes with the double track set, two trains, and two controllers. When I first saw the Japanese J500 bullet train, I couldn't stop myself. I'll have to make it modular. I envision trains going all out, passing by each other thru varied terrain. Rice paddies. and cherry blossoms are a must.

You mention the folk who wander off, or switch the clip off, when they see it isn't UK outline and it isn't OO. A few years ago, I was on Eastleigh station taking photos and one of the local spotters was nearby - really a long way gone into his obsession with UK OO! He was commenting on some of the model exhibitions he'd visited and he got to talking about one in Gosport. "Nice little exhibition," he said. "But it's all American N!" Perhaps the name of the organisers should have told him something 'The American Model Railroad Group' . . . Another great video! Keep them coming.

I love British railways, I even got a job with British Rail when I left school, but as regards making a Japanese N gauge layout has been an amazing idea, I personally find it fascinating and very interesting to see how other countries run their railways, and what better way to do that than build a layout. "Different", ie not UK, or to a lesser extent US, layouts are always interesting. Well, they are to me anyway. I love that backscene. I've just bought a load of Kato track for an ammo box project and, while in it's new state it does stand out, as you rightly say, once it's bedded in to the scenery you can't beat it. I don't know if you've looked at scenic stuff on Temu? Just took delivery of my first order today and it seems to be pretty good - some of it exactly the same as much more expensive branded stuff. Edit - watched to the - end - my good lady is from South Korea - its really hard to find decent models in any gauge of famous trains like the KTX - I got a fantastic push-out model of Seoul Station - i just wish the trams and trains of Korea where better represented in the model railway market !

Very convincing layout, including one specificity of Japan's geography seen by my parents when they traveled there some years ago : patches of agricultural activities scattered everywhere you have arable land to grow something, lots of times into urban-built areas. Your layout IRL would be at home anywhere in the Kanto plain (area where Tokyo and its surrounding cities are). And, as a French who models UK, Italy, Germany, Poland, USA, Japan and... France, I agree on a non-chauvinist approach of model railways !

I really enjoyed seeing your layouts. This one is unique yet familiar if you follow your work. I actually use American 3 rail o-gauge but don’t have a lot of space so I’m trying to adapt some of your techniques in the larger scale. Simplifying the track plan opens up more room for scenery and brings down the cost because points are expensive no matter which gauge you use.

The rice paddy looks accurate as well as the rest of the layout. The city portion could use lots of people. In Naha I observed business people rushing to appointments. Teachers with their children in matching uniforms on a Saturday school outing. There were the street vendors selling chicken and fish on a skewers along with veggies and bowls of rice. Lots of cars and busses bumper to bumper during the rush hour. Some cars had lights on the under frame; (boy racers, I suppose). Grocery stores and markets with lots of signage, some of it featuring Anime type cartoon figures. There is a lot to learn when modeling a foreign country. I enjoyed my travels in Japan.

I model UK N gauge based in the1930's. On KZbin I subscribe to US, UK, Australian, New Zealand, Indian, Japanese and German railway modellers working in N, OO, HO, S, O(English and American) G with periods from 1800's to Modern day, all of them provided something to learn from. I also follow Wargaming channels, military modellers and diorama makers, again who offer different techniques to learn and take inspiration from. Limiting you self to a small subset limits what you can learn. As regards Kato track being toy like, I've seen basement empires in the states built with Kato track, and when it's all sceniced, you can't tell whether it's Kato, Peco flextrack or any other track, I've also seen Peco track looking toy like! It all depends on how you finish it...
