Another great Tech...or in this case Driving Tech Talk topic delivered by you guys!!!
Today we get into the characteristics of the 488 Pista and how I have it set up. I break down it’s understeer and using a powerslide not to showboat but to actually get the car to rotate around a turn!
Hope you enjoy and please share your ideas or questions for further videos below.
Most importantly I hope you enjoy Tom’s Clickbait AF thumbnail LOL

What strikes me the most about the Pista is the fact that it accelerates just as fast in 1th untill 5th gear. Never saw any other car do that. Only from 6th gear you can feel that the car is struggling with the wind resistance.

The techniques you have talked about are really helpful. Even in street driving you can implement some of them. A couple of times I found myself going the speed limit and misjudging the sharpness of a corner. I took my foot off the throttle and the car came around beautifully. Even though it's an fwd estate. The dab of the brake is a good shout too for fwd cars. Really loving the vids.

Nice technique, Robert, love that you drive those cars at the limit. When I read Derek Seward book and also Caroll Smith, they also said that a nimble setup with little tendency to undesteer while having power-oversteer would be better for lap times.

Great post and explanation Robert. Love the Pista and your review of the alignment changes you did. I have a 488 spider and R8v10, definitely different characteristics between them on the track. I take them to Watkins Glen. Any thoughts on the Pista brakes, say vs the GT2RS? I find that sometimes I have press the brake pedal on the 488 with all my might. Not sure why, doesn’t happen all the time. The R8 has a great initial bite and is always consistent.

Hi Robert, I am driving a R56 Cooper S. I know, I know my car is far from the super cars that you are introducing. But I am really interested to learn how to drive a mini - a short, FF car. You talked about how trail braking help turning the rear. But I found a short FF car like mini really difficult to do because it tends to follow the front a lot. It either oversteer completely out of control, or more often, understeer. I am also having a relatively soft suspension setting and a close to 1.3:1 ratio of front and rear camber.

Seems like the 488GTB and Pista have soft springs....I've noticed how much of a difference in ride height the 488 GTB's and Pista's have at speed. In your video your Pista looks like it is all the way down, fully compressed springs with a major change in ride height from standstill to full speed int he corner. So with that in mind do you think the car has lost it's suspension and could cause more sliding around/less grip due to fully compressed springs/shocks? Do you think that shorter stiffer springs would help better with lowering the car but keeping the springs from full compression and shocks too and the car would have more grip? I ask this because I have my 1st 488GTB right now but I come from Porsche GT3's with my last one a 2018 GT3. Thanks for the great insightful videos!!!

@Robert Mitchell : really excellent explanation of the dynamics of the Pista through that corner. What is the reason that a Porsche GT2/3 has less understeer than the Pista? Weight distribution doesn't seem different, track width doesn't show a difference (+/- 3 cm more width at the front)... Is the understeer you still have in the Pista something you want to/will address with changes to the car? Or is the car well balanced and will changes only make it less effective/joyful to drive?

They can be quite comfortable on the street (according to my limited experience apporx. 800km) and on the same time real track weapons! I think making the distinction between a drift and slip angle is huge and the 720S is the perfect example of that, people think on the 720S that when you adjust the "drift" mode that its gonna let you drift that wide and you're safe, it will save you. Thats just not true, that setting is the automatic adjustment the car will do to allow you to achieve that degree of slip angle when driving it correctly on the limit. Informative video as usual.

In the class of 'racing' I participate in with older rear drive cars the most common problem is corner exit terminal over steer. It can be so quick that catching it is beyond amateur reflexes. Perhaps getting it to set early on exit like with the Ferrari here would be better rather than trying to judge when to put the power down on exit and getting it wrong.

What can you do against these twitchy oversteer characteristics? I'm guessing playing with the alignment and in Assetto Corsa I notice the cars behaving like this when the diff doesn't lock fully. Obviously having a longer wheelbase would help, but that's not something that we can / should do. Also would love to see a video on how alignment can change the characteristics of the car. Like more camber at the front giving more front grip, toe-in at the back giving you a more stable ride etc.

Hahahaha ! I know that Robert told me that the experience on a rainy day with Tim is a "once in a life experience", but I wanted to experience the ultimate grip, the brutal braking and the G force etc... anyways, I'm confident Robert knows what he's talking about... and that indeed will be a wonderful experience... My next ride would be in a McLaren, but I wait for the right model... not sure about the 620R though... i'm waiting to see Robert's first test to decide... But McLaren is high on my list...

Thanks so much for the insight you give in this video! As for ideas, I would be keen to see something on how best to drive a 911 fast, given the rear engined dynamics of the car. Mine's a bit of an older one being a 2008 997.1 C2S, which I've had for 5 months and put 5k miles on (8k kms). As I've spent more time with the car and put more miles on, my ability and confidence have naturally grown, but it would be great to get tips on how to drive a 911 fast. Thanks.
