This is great. This reminds me of visiting my grandparents at Addi Gebray when we were children. We lived in Addis Ababa. Indeed, the way our houses or ‘hidmo’ were constructed is intertwined with the history of people who built it, lived in it and practiced their culture. Thanks for a thoughtful analysis and the need to preserve our culture. It is very important that new generations know and appreciate their cultural values and customs. I know live in a house that was built 1899 and it is just magnificent, although it sometimes requires maintenance and upkeep (ie electricity, heating system, plumbing, etc). About a year ago all the houses in the neighborhood became a local historic district, so that no one changes or tears down the original architecture. We did that because there were developers (and international money bags, mostly from China and MiddleEast) buying houses and tearing them down to build new ones in desirable districts in Northeast US cities and towns. Most don't even live in the houses, but keep them as investments (or rent them), which is not good for the social wellbeing of the neighborhood. So, we became an official ‘historic district’. If a house needs to needs maintenance and remodeling, preservation commission in our town reviews and approves the project requiring that it adheres to the strict standards of the original structure. Any modern amenities has to be consistent with its the original design guidelines and preservation of original buildings. That’s how Westerners (in this case in the US) maintain and preserve their architectural and historical assets. Eritrea could do the same to preserve its original structures.

Amazing ! ❤🇪🇷❤🇪🇷❤🇪🇷 Where I live over 100 years old house you can't modify it or demolishe it by law : however, the government provide fund to maintain it .
Wow , what a beautiful and functional design of Eritrea's old traditional homes. It's amazing how it's made by the community effort that shows how the Eritrean people have strong relationship and support with each other. 👍🇪🇷🇪🇷❤🙏

Are people are the most brilliant people peaceful people loving people in the whole wide world. you can't find anyone like them nowhere especially their faith in God. I remember visiting a village in Eritrea a woman didn't even have hardly nothing she was trying to give us something to eat I was shocked how they are so kind to strangers the truth Israelite is in East Africa I consider Eritrea the New Jerusalem. God bless every true forever amen.
Y'all need a new updated tradition. 💯💯💯🙏❤️ Where you incorporate traditional aspects into modernized updated technology. 💯💯💯🇪🇷🇪🇷🇪🇷🦾🦾🦾 IT'S TIME TO STEP ERITREA'S GAME UP!!! HEIGHTEN ERITREAN STANDARDS. AMEN TO GOD BE THE GLORY ❤️❤️❤️
Traditional constructions share features mostly of ancient Axumite architecture. Our culture would have been immeasurably richer if we aimed to achieve the rebirth or re-creation of ancient Axumite culture, with examples of Axumite-style architecture occuring in every major town. Knowledge of Axumite architecture could have been derived from the ruins of ancient buildings, particularly in Axum but also in Adulis and Lälibela. Instead we are led to believe that our cultural heritage is confined to the buildings of Asmara which Italian architects designed during the fifty-year period of their stay in our country. Asmära itself could have been transformed into an unparraleled collection of Axumite buildings. Heruy.
