at my high school, in his 13 or so years as head coach, 2 of the coaches sons were varsity quarterbacks, all 4 years of high school. His third son is in the 8th grade and will start next year. All politics.

This happens all the time, not just in football. "The coach's son" syndrome is rampant in Texas even though the son is a mediocre athlete. I have seen it in baseball, basketball etc...if this was a business, you would not be able to hire family members to work for you. This should be treated the same.

Of course they decided on an open competition, you would be amazed how fast a coach will change their mind, when his star running back quits the team also....gotta love Texas HS Football!

I never had great coaching experiences in my time. But on the football side, the coaches son was not athletic enough to play a skill position and was our biggest man, so naturally he played LT and NT. When I played baseball though, I was a senior who could hit off the walls on a 6' line drive, and I sat on the bench to a freshman 3rd basemen who just happened to be the coaches son. The kid played full time, never hit an extra base hit, stole a base, and yet was hitting higher in the lineup than I and didn't hit above .150 on the other hand, I came off the bench hitting .294 and slugging .600 with an on base percentage of .420 and I still wasn't good enough. I pleaded with him to give me a reason why I sat, he said "I'm just as comfortable with you." What the heck? your kid hits sub .200 and I am just under .300 off the bench and you say I don't make you feel comfortable? The previous year, the more playing time I got, the more comfortable I was. I started out cold at .245 but finished hitting .379 and my on base percentage was .518 slugging was .623 Quit coddling your babies! Let the players who want to play, play!

This Is EXACTLY Why I Didnt Play Football In High School. I Wanted To Play Halfback (Or At Least TE) But Coach Insisted At Putting Me At Receiver. Im Not The Best Catcher, But I Can Run My Ass Off. Give Me The Ball & Watch Me Work. Its The Past Now.
@Darin-USMCB--7 жыл бұрын
A similar thing happened to me & my football team my senior year in high school, It was difficult for the entire team, but for me personally to quit, as I had played football in grade school, junior high & high school , and you work for the tour senior year to be the best , building memories to last a lifetime. But our coach, had a son who was talented- but not quarterback material, at least not as a sophomore, He could throw, but was overweight, and slow, could maneuver, or rollout of the pocket effectively, I wasn't in running for that position, but we had several that were much better than he, I was a running back , but mostly a receiver, even in my position, he had the exact same guy he wanted to throw it to each & every time, who had good speed after the catch, but I had much better hands , and he missed frequently, trying to run before he actually had control of the ball, so as an opponent, if you were observant, you could easily pick up, on the pattern, if you saw this one guy going in, You were assured the coach had called a running play, Over the course of the first 2-3 games, the majority of our team quit... We had that coach my junior year also , but he was much worse the senior year, The following year after graduation, he was fired.

I know the feeling of not being selected. In Aussie Rules Football, I was a Full Forward for my local suburb. I was named league best & fairest and led the league in Goals, 129, if you know Aussie Rules then you know that that is alot of goals. Going into the Grand Final I was dropped in favor of the coaches son who was not even amogst the teams best 22. The reason I got dropped and none of our mediocre players was because the coaches son refused to play any position other than Full Forward and his son didn't like me. We would win the Grand Final by 1 point, considering that we had not lost a single game that season and won them all by 40 plus points pissed me off. He ended up being forced to quit the team because of this. Sadly I don't get a Premiership medal becuase you have to been in the game to get one.

The very first little league team I was on was like this. There were 4 or 5 coaches and their sons were just given the best team positions like QB, RB, and WR's while the rest of us competed to be the linemen or on defense. It may have been OK if those kids were pretty good but they all SUCKED BADLY. We lost EVERY SINGLE GAME. I joined the swim team the next year.

Fire the coach, finding a replacement is easy. Wouldn't even let the star quarterback try out for the position, what a joke. That's the kind of guy you want to teach your kids displine and lead them throughout the years? A guy who will toss your kid to the side with no shred of chance for his lesser-preforming son? Trusting that guy to help you get a scholar ship would be like trying to run on water.

But, they still have a coach of questionable morals. When the school says "he wont be involved in offensive side decisions" it shows they dont trust him to make those decisions again either. How he is still in his position, and left to guide young men is beyond me. If you show you cant be trusted, you leave. Pretty simple.
