My late father would had loved to had. Seen this. He loved the old steamers. And would tell me stories from when he was a kid listing to their whistles in bed at night and how they would help him fall asleep. He even got me into model railroading as a kid and his trains were steamers. How he would had loved to had seen and heard this engine. But he passed two years ago at the age of 85.

Is it me or does 611 sound close to UP 3985 at 4:30?

UP challengers and N&W J's had the same Hancock 3 Chime whistles, the same one 844 and 4014 have.

Harvey: her boiler is fired with coal, and of course the boiler turns water into steam to run the engine.

Diesels are usually added for dynamic braking and, in the case for passenger diesels, head end power. I guess they didn't find it necessary for this trip. I mean, the J is the most powerful passenger steam locomotive ever built and doesn't require nearly as much maintenance as other steamers.
