N0HJZ 2024 Minnesota QSO Party 20 Meter Pile-Up | Emergency Communications Prep. Rich, N0HJZ, was out mobile for the 2024 Minnesota QSO Party - Feb 3, 2024. I activated 27 counties in ten hours and made 1,680 contacts. Amateur radio contests are a great preparation for emergency communications and you learn how to quickly transmit and receive information.
This pile-up was on 20 meters and was filmed from 1512 - 1527z. Folks, you are watching a seasoned ham radio operator who performs at the top of his craft. You learn to think faster and faster. I was doing all that without paper, just receiving the data and repeating my exchange. I had a recorder taped to the dash, recording it all. I then logged everything the next day. It was a fun contest! Cheers!

I just started watching this and I’m excited to hear the rest. A month ago The American Homestead recommended newbies buy a cheap Baofeng on Amazon, less than $20. So I did, as well as the book The Guerrillas’s Guide to the Baofeng Radio. He said it was a cheap way to learn some basics and we can listen in without a license. Your video is getting me to start playing with it.

I have five videos on ham radio. You need to watch my first video on ham radio and emergency communications. There are so many people who were told to buy a Baofeng radio. You will be able to listen out five miles (or so). Check out getting a ham radio license and you will be able to talk all around the country and around the world. If you're prepping in case of an emergency, a Baofeng will not get you much. If you have more questions, please feel free to reach out! I'm here to help!

We were bummed this year, worked well over 300 contacts on 40 & 80 Meters out of SIB and could not work any of the mobile/rovers this year.... :(

I was almost exclusively on 20M as the pile-ups never ended. I worked a few MN stations but it would've been better on 40 or 80. I was planning to go to 40M for the last hour but never got there. I worked over 190/hr the last two hours. Never got to 40! 73!

New ham here, Tech and General on 1/4/24.Studying for Extra. Blows me away the experience you must have of listening and HEARING the info you need for the contest. Wondered of how you log but read your mentioning the recorder. Question to more fully understand your use of QRZed. What are you saying when using it? What are you looking for when using it? Congrats on the new license! That is awesome! QRZ means "who is calling me." I'll use it in a pile-up as I know many people are calling me. When I finish a QSO, I could say "who else is out there?" or I could just say "QRZ." It save a second. In a pile-up, over ten hours, saving a second, many times per minute, saves me fifteen minutes (or so) over the entire time. Fifteen minutes could mean an additional 60 QSO's. That could be enough to win my category. In a contest, it's all about efficiency and getting as many people in the log as fast as I can. Seconds add up. Hope that makes sense. Just getting into ham radio and listening to you talk to others had me so confused how you can understand what they’re saying. Everything by is coming in so fast and people talking over others makes it really hard to listen to. It’s really cool to have a fellow Minnesotan to learn from!

It didn't happen overnight. There are guys that can hear calls on CW with 50 people calling them. I have the ability to hear SSB calls while (it seems like) the whole world is calling. You just practice and practice. It's amazing what the brain can do! If you ever want to get into contesting, I'd love to help. Not sure where in Minnesota you're located but we've got a great club (Minnesota Wireless Assn). Contesting is a LOT of fun and it sharpens your operating skills. Cheers Ethan!

I have a small digital recorder that is taped to the dash, below the radio. It records the entire contest. I then have to "relive" the contest and log it. Quite a process but it works great.

My recommendation would be to buy the license study guide and learn out of there. They cover all the questions, topics, etc. That's how I did it. 73!
