My '99 N14 did the same thing: broke a valve near the top, I heard the tinging and shut it down immediately. Luckily it didn't do any damage to the cylinder/piston. My cam had several lobes that looked like that one, and all the matching cam followers were the same. New cam, bearings, and once I finally got 3 decent heads from Cummins, she's been going strong. I love the N14 design. So easy to work on.

In my experience you must always fine the cause. Never assume it just wore out or bad parts . I would have done all the things you did because doing a total rebuild every time is not economical. I am 66 now and still work on diesels and from the school of hard knocks I have learned to study details. Like you found if you stop look and listen the engine will tell you what is wrong. Enjoyed your video. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks for posting the video. I have a N14 in a 97’ with only 550k miles. I work on my own stuff, so I appreciate the video.

Doing your own work is the only way to go, I learned that recently also. Thanks for commenting!

Yeah- -On occurance #3 and the SAME cylinder and intake/exhaust, I think I will have gone backwards from the valve to the springs to the keepers to the push tubes to find the followers and the camshaft.

I hope that my N14 does not drop a valve.😕 My N14 has 1,149,000 miles with 43,500 hours. I have not read much about valves dropping on N14s. I have read that N14s eat injectors and sometimes there are cam issues.

I don't know the exact history of this truck and engine, but its pretty safe to say that it was the original cam and likely had 1.5 to 2 million miles.
