I travelled on Aer Lingus from London to Dublin to visit Ireland. Heathrow was extremely crowded as travel is bouncing back. I visited the Aer Lingus Lounge at Heathrow. Then, to my surprise, I received an upgrade to Business Class onboard the new Aer Lingus A321LR. Flight to Dublin was a short 55 minute hop. After landing in Dublin, I went plane-spotting at Dublin Airport. The next day I drove around the Irish countryside to visit Galway, the Cliffs of Moher and Shannon. The scenery and people are both lovely in Ireland.
After 2 days, I flew out of Dublin to Toronto on another brand new Aer Lingus A321LR. Aer Lingus has decent Business Class products and I particularly enjoyed the meal onboard.
There are pros and cons of flying the narrowbody A321 Transatlantic. It saves time as a direct flight without connecting at major hub airports but the single-aisle takes longer to board, and may not have as much space as a widebody airplane. The A321LR/XLR will become a regular sight on Transatlantic flights in the near future.

@gospelgroupie 2 жыл бұрын
@@adrienking5594 As far as I recall, that accolade goes to Foynes, Co. Limerick, not far across the mouth of the River Shannon from SNN. Foynes was (briefly) the first stopover for transatlantic passenger flying-boats as they hopped from East-Coast USA to Gandar, Foynes. They'd then be bussed via Limerick City to the new Shannon Airport in Clare to continue their journey to European cities. As flying-boats were replaced by Constellations and Super Constellations before and after WW2, Shannon found its purpose as a stopover under threat - airliners were able to skip it. Shannon had to change its product offering, and fast. That's when the Duty-Free idea came about. The idea of Duty-Free Zones for industry had been done elsewhere, but SNN brought it into the terminal building for the first time. That was groundbreaking. Another coup that saved Shannon was a deal with Moscow, in the depths of the Cold War, that they would be the European stop-over for Aeroflot routes to Cuba. The USSR sold avgas cheaply to Ireland so that we could refuel their aircraft. Other airlines were happy to stopover in this airport for a quick splash of cheap fuel too. One other thing to note is that, again during the Cold War, Shannon is reputed to have had been included as a target by both the USA and USSR should either of them press the red button to trigger nuclear war. Another first for Shannon was that it was one of the Shannon has been let down over the last 20-30 year by government removing requirements for Dublin-bound transatlantic flights to stop-over, and then in recent years by selling Aer Lingus, the national carrier, to IAG. Constantly having to reinvent itself, Shannon was one of the first international airports to offer US pre-clearance. That has proven to be a big hit and a reason why the post-Concorde BA001 route would fly from London City Airport to Shannon and onward to New York. Another shot in the arm for the airport was its use from 2002 throughout to 2021 as a stopover for US military aircraft and troop-transport to and from the likes of Iraq and Afghanistan.

Hi Sam, thank you for another wonderful video. I just want to share a few quick thoughts about single-aisle planes on transatlantic flights. First, for those of us who are old enough, there was a time when all transatlantic flights were on narrow-bodies, simply because there were no wide-bodies (before the introduction of the 747 in 1969/1970). More recently, of course, airlines have been flying "long-thin" routes using the 757 and, in fact, the 321 LR & XLR are recognized as the successors to the 757. Finally, regarding the experience, I think there are pros and cons to both types of planes and while I have always loved the really big planes (747 & A380) I think we can all agree that there is little worse than being stuck in a middle seat in economy on a totally full 747 or A380.

I'm facing a transatlantic Dublin - New York flight with Aer Lingus in a couple of weeks - sadly, I've never been able to afford a seat upgrade, so I'll be jammed in Economy with everyone else (which I'm a bit nervous about, as the pandemic continues and I'm vulnerable, but anyway). AL is seen as slightly more expensive than other similar airlines, but I was happy to choose to pay a little more to support our national airline, which is normally very good, and as a simple tribute to a late aunt, Eva, who was a very glam Aer Lingus stewardess back in the Sixties. Just really hoping there'll be nobody beside me in the two-seater rows I strategically picked for my flights near the back of the planes, ha!

Enjoyed this video with the old shots of previous Aer Lingus planes. My first transatlantic trip in 1980 was on that lovely Aer Lingus early version of the 747 shown in your video, the 100 with 3 upper deck windows. Sitting near the bulkhead about 2 or 3 rows back, there was still a very spacious feel on board. Their Airbus A330’s maintained that feeling of space and for that they remained my favourite way to cross the Atlantic from Ireland, better than the Continental 757 crossing I used several times from Belfast for convenience. All other things being equal I’d still opt for a wide body across the Atlantic any day.

Even got a surprise 'Your a bit tall, the exit seats are free, would you like an upgrade' FOC the last time I flew, which meant I had the unusual experience of having a place to put my feet which is something I've never had in a plane.

That Wardair 747 was my very first jet flight from LGW to YVR back in June of '76. Was a great airline, in 1989 I was working for Canadian Airlines when we bought them out. Don't think I agree with the 707 being overly smoky, but now the similar jet, the Convair C990 Coronado always spewed thick black smoke. Welcome to Canada, hope you have a great visit.

For Example, Air Lingus When Requesting Its Flight Clearance For The TWR (Tower), Pilots Do Not Say : “ - TWR, Air Lingus 123 Request Flight Clearance to KJFK (New York, JFK)” , They Ask It Using Its (Air Lingus’) Call Sign Like So : “ - TWR, SHAMROCK 123 Request … “ ! And British Airways Like So : “ - TWR, SPEED BIRD Request … “ ! Pan Am, When Still in Operation : “ - TWR, CLIPPER 123 Request …” ! And So On With Many Airlines That Still Maintain This Tradition of Using Call Signs ! Hope You Enjoy ! 👍🏼👍🏽👍🏼 Ed

It's bad enough that medium sized wide-bodies such as the 787 and A350 have largely replaced the mighty 747, A340's, and even A380's on some routes. What happened to all the surplus passengers that used to be on 747's from say LON-LAX. BA had at least two flights a day and each must have had around 400pax. The new A350 probably has around 300, so what happened to the extra 200pax...?

It has to do with how the market has shifted from a hub-to-hub to point-to-point. More people are demanding direct flights rather than connections, and that type of model favours smaller aircraft in order to maximize load factors and make the most profit for the airline.

The other point on A321LR and XLR is that this family flies at a considerably lower altitude than widebodies. Especially during winter months this can translate to a lot more turbulence.

Hi Sam👋 Sorry to correct you..because that the mountains block the clouds who are coming from the Atlanlic Ocean especially in the west of Ireland 200 rainy days a year are possible. But nice to see that you had the perfect weather 🙂 For me this was a very special video....my first meeting with my girlfriend was in Ireland after landing at Dublin airport. And of course, i also saw the wonderful Cliffs of Moher 🙂 I prefer to fly with Aer Lingus to my girlfriend in NYC because this Preclearence is very comfortable to save time after arriving at the airport. So i also flew with a Airbus A321 LR in Business Class and i have to say it is very comfortable. I flew with a Aer Lingus Airbus A330, too. So for me it doesn't matter one or two aisle. But for me as a single person, this single seats between these double seats are much better. Greetings from Berlin! And just in case my sweetie is reading this : I💗U 😄

The retired Air Canada and Wardair pilot. I used to love the Tristar L-1011 planes flown by Air Canada. They no longer have the 747 or A340. AC still has the 767 and 777.

actually the difference between and Irish and English is that on an Irish breakfast you normally include White pudding, soda bread, no beans. Sometimes Potato Farls. then the usual sausages etc. For someone to say oh its just we are in Ireland is a slap in the face for Irish people. Looks like they served you an English breakfast there.

Sam, I just started watching your channel about a month ago and every since have been hooked on your travels. I flew Air Lingus years ago direct from LAX to Dublin. Now it looks like they use their Airbus A330's. I think back then 2003 we flew on a Boeing 767.

It would be so good if LHR introduced pre USA clearance too. That would save so much time at the destination when you’re tired and just want to move on

When waiting at Toronto in 2000 for my BA 747 flight back to LHR, I remember seeing a Finnair 757 on a flight to Helsinki. So narrow bodied transatlantic flights are not a new phenomenon. And, of course prior to the wide bodies such flights were in DC8s, 707s and 720s. United also used 757s on transatlantic (may still). To be honest I think I'd prefer flying on a narrow body across the pond. Just feels a bit more personal somehow. I hated the BA 747 flight to and from Toronto. Absolutely full, so crowded and cramped in economy. Legroom was also not good for long haul.

Nice! I agree about that blocked view at Dublin Airport. Otherwise, what a great place to watch the planes. At minute 1:00, though, you flash up a four-leaf clover, but the symbol of Ireland is a three-leaf shamrock! :)

Flew Aer Lingus trans-atlantic when I was studying in Dublin. The plane they use for Ohare to Dublin wasn't bad, but wasn't the greatest compared to flying the 787 to their A330.
