Enviable job making that video! I lived in a small orchard in San Diego in mid 1970's. There were a couple Nabal trees and by far my favorite of all the varieties of avo's I've eaten. I ate one or two a day for months every year I was there.

Have two young Reeds, never tasted, just set fruit this year. They are a BEAUTIFUL tree. So looking forward to video on trees. I'm going with the smaller trees: GEM, Gwen, Pinkerton, Lamb, Holiday, Wurtz, keeping all well below 15 feet, even my Hass and Bacon. Excellent videos.

We have a tree that’s got fruit for the first time. The tree is about 15 years old. It’s November now and the abundant fruit is not getting any bigger -about the size of a haas. So I took some off to ripen but after two weeks in a bag, they’re till hard. After another week they’re a little soft but they’re getting wrinkles The fruit is watery ompared to a haas. My husband thinks it’s a reed

Great Vid! I agree on your taste test. Nabal is amazing. We have 2 trees of it. We don't give them away either. They are the "farmer's choice" fruit. We have a small fruit tree and avocado orchard here in South Texas along the Gulf Coast. We grow Gem, Kahalu'u, Green Gold, Jan Boyce, Reed, Lamb Hass, Sir Prize, Hass, Nabal, Carmen, Sharwill, and Gwen. We look forward to harvesting Nabals. So darn good!

We have to grow the low chill varieties of stone fruits due to our chill hours along the coast, like you... We grow Parfianka pomegranates, about 30+ different fig varieties, white & yellow peaches, white & yellow nectarines, apriums, apricots, plums, pluots, Asian Pears, mangoes, and about 6+ banana varieties.

Nice vid! When you do your next vid comparing the actual characteristics of the trees, please go into detail as to which is more space friendly. Also wonder how either would do up against the Choquette variety? Which do you think would be best for blending g into a shake or smoothie? 👍

Thanks! Will do. I’ve never tried Choquette so i couldn’t tell you. I believe it’s a Flórida variety, and in general they have a lighter, sweeter taste that’s good for smoothies

Reed avocado grow well in arid windy areas, Mediterranean climate, they will do well in hot dry areas in the world such as California Argentina Australia and parts of Africa

Are you sure you didn’t mix the 2 up? That one you say is reed has a massive stone and little flesh, which looks like Nabal. The one you said is Nabal looks exactly like all the reeds I have had.

Great taste test, a new large round type is called cannonball avocado its a bit larger than reed or nabal at 3 pounds likely seedling tree came from nimlioh or nabal seed, mostly grown in northern cal so far i have cannonball trees, the cool thing is a tiny bit more cold hardy than a Nabal and taste prob about the same as Nabal.

@@MultiTlp I too have watched all kinds of grafting videos, with much mixed success, however as opposed to Ajmal, I carefully remove the parafilm as soon as I can, after the buds leaf, to keep moisture out of the graft union and rot happening.

@@MultiTlp I've read that Monterey Garden Phos cures avo root rot, some growers add it to all their irrigation water. You might try soaking the scion in a solution for a few hours prior to grafting. I ordered mine from Amazon. Just be sure to dilute it. Best of luck

Any idea who may have some as I know they are rare. I contacted CRFG OC chapter and they are being super nice and getting some scion and making me a couple trees but I’d like to get sooner. I put a Nimlioh in back in April at my parents place in Coastal San Diego county - I’m pretty sure the lady I bought it from got the scion wood from CRFG OC. I live up in SF Bay Area or id be out there snooping around more in So Cal. Im sort of lazy and prefer to buy grafted trees but in the case of Nimlioh seems more personal initiative is needed.

I ate a few Julia fruit a few years ago. All I remember is they were delicious, just as creamy and rich as Reed and Nabal with a subtle sweet flavor. I know very little about the tree growth habit, cold tolerance, etc.

Both varieties sound and look great. How's the oil content on the Nabal? You mentioned it has a well developed 'nutty' flavor......which is a strong plus when it comes to Avocados.

Yes. In hot weather, they like a heavy layer of mulch all around the base of the tree and also consistent watering. Young trees less than 3 years old need some sun protection in 95 degree temperature and up

I'm so sad for the lack of vocabulary to describe avocados, where the hundreds of words to describe red wine. Avocado vocabulary. Creamy nutty buttery green yellow stringy strong avocado taste. Pretty pathetic.

Save your money and yard space. Do Not plant Reed. I'm cutting down my Reed tree. I paid $70 for a small grafted branch. Now it's a small tree. It gave me fruits the 1st year I planted it. This year is the 2nd year. Both years, the fruits tasted watery. Because the water content is so high, there's no flavor. Instead, plant Fuerte. Fuertes are extremely creamy like butter and nutty flavor.

They need to stay on the tees for longer then. They become oilier the longer they are on. They take 18+ months from flowering to be ready to eat.

@@CSI426 hi Logan don’t give up. I have some Reeds and they are awesome if you are patient. Last year I picked a few in June and they tasted like shit and it was depressing bc they were rubbery and almost inedible. Waiting 1 month until July was a profound difference and they ripened perfectly and tastes excellent. My mom has a Reed and this year is the first big crop and she started picking them a few months ago and even though I warned her not too. She learned the hard way and is waiting for me to give the ok. Will try around Memorial Day and if no good we wait until first day summer.
