My dog took one off of the tree here in November. I put it on the counter and 3 weeks later it was ripe. It was still good but more like a Mexican race avocado. In June when they turn black the flavor is more like Hass and ripens in a few days. But the fact that this tree produces fruit that can be eaten from November to June is amazing!

I've seen avocado trees over a hundred years old: gregalder.com/yardposts/among-some-of-the-oldest-avocado-trees-in-california-at-the-huntington/ How do the leaves of your tree look? Dense, green? If so, then it's just having an off year in terms of fruiting. That's normal.

Hi Gary, Pinkerton is supposedly from around 1975, from Saticoy, near Ventura and Santa Paula. I am curious how you get a tree that old, 40+ years. That has to be one of the oldest Pinkerton trees.

Interesting up here in Northern California the Pinkertons look exactly like they do in this video from Vietnam. Thought it may be of interests since we discussed this difference before elsewhere as well as people discussing it here. Julie Frink recommends Pinkerton (or Fuerte) with Sharwil and Reed for year round production. Unfortunately up here I don't think Sharwil likes our high heat. I love my Pinkerton though. Small tree and always producing. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nHqwaoypn6p5sJY.

Sure thing G! Kind of strange to share a random video that is not my own but I find it fascinating to see our shared obsession popping up in another part of the world. I like how the showcase all those different varieties and their trees with English titles on the screen. Very helpful!

When to pick the Pinkerton? I've made at least 6 attempts at growing avocados (different varieties) in the Bay Area. Finally I've had success. Planted a Jim Bacon and Pinkerton in close proximity. Got fruit on my Pinkerton for the first time. Watched the fruit grow from last June-ish. (2020) Started methodically picking fruit in March (2021). They were definitely large enough... yes, takes forever to ripen... but haven't had a good tasting fruit yet. When am I supposed to pick them?? I thought anywhere between Nov and March? But clearly something is wrong with my calculation as the fruit is watery. I have one fruit left and I'm afraid to pick it. I do, however, have new fruit that set this month on both my Pinkerton and Jim Bacon. The trees are so healthy looking -- it's been at least 5 years tending to these trees... I'm so disappointed that the fruit may never be any good. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I'd pick that last Pinkerton now. June is the tail end of Pinkerton harvest season, at least down south here. To me, Pinkertons start tasting good around February or March and are good through May, maybe June.

Hi Greg have you seen Gary Gregg’s Pinkerton video? Can they get that big??? Thank you for all the videos. Do you mind me asking what town in SD county you are in? Your growing area looks very good. I grew up in Vista and we grow a lot of avos at my moms place and I now have a small avo grove in the east hills of San Jose in SF Bay Area

Hi Pat, I don't know for sure which video you're referring to, but Pinkertons can get pretty big, bigger than Hass, for example. I'm in Ramona. I've got good soil for avocados, but Vista has a better climate with less summer heat and warmer winter nights. I've seen some beautiful old Fuerte trees in San Jose. I bet you can grow some great avocado trees where you're at.

That's such a hard question! But in my location in Southern California, if I had to choose just one tree I would choose Hass. I tried to answer this question in a post I wrote on my website called, "What's the best kind of avocado to grow?" Here is that post: gregalder.com/yardposts/whats-the-best-kind-of-avocado-to-grow/

Pinkertons, just like many other avocado varieties, vary somewhat in shape, size, and skin texture according to the environment in which they're grown. Sorry that I don't know anything about the specific Pinkerton strain you're referring to, but even on any single Pinkerton tree in any location the fruit will vary a bit. That's the way it is on my tree, as well as every other Pinkerton I've ever seen. Pinkerton fruit actually varies more than many other varieties because it has a tendency to flower very early and for a very long time, such that early-set fruit can look different from late-set fruit. Pinkerton's a cool variety!

If you checked the comment section on Gary Gragg's video, he said it could be Daily 11 or something else. I often find Gary's presentation very much dramatized, and not always factual.
