Alrighty! This is a bit of along one, but there is a lot of stuff to cover. We start with assembling the axles by pressing the serrated bolts into a couple parts. Then we install a seal, a bearing, a spacer and a snap ring. After that we install the pinion into the diff housing and set the preload. After that we install the diff and set the backlash. And finally we put everything together and complete the rear axle rebuild (minus the brakes)

I think I did it off camera. I don't record most of the painting to protect the camera. That overspray is nasty stuff.

I noticed that you did not check the gear contact pattern between the pinion gear and the ring gear. Is that a common practice with this differential? Yes backlash is important and so is the contact pattern. How about carrier bearing preload? I know on a 9inch Ford rear-end the carrier bearing preload is applied while adjusting the backlash. That is the case with a 9 inch Ford differential which is exactly the same as this one. Sorry about being a PITA on this but I am genuinely curious about the change in procedure on assembling this style of differential.

I didn't check the contact pattern in the video, but I went back and checked later on off camera. It looked acceptable so I didn't feel like it was anything to make a video about. Both backlash and contact pattern are important, just forgot to do contact in the video. I didn't check carrier preload. I could go back and check it, but as per the last video of the series; I'm not working on the truck anymore.

I have the kobalt brand digital ones. They aren't anything to write home about, but they've been durable and reliable so far. Lowes might still have them. Not sure what has happened with the craftsman change over. I'd recommend them if they fit your budget.

Not sure yet. Need to do some research and see how much backlash is supposed to be in spider gears. Depending on what I find and if it's worth the time I might rebuild or I might add a LSD.

Yes there is a paper gasket that went between the case and gear housing. It came with the rebuild kit I bought.

Great progress so far! Would love to do a frame off restoration on my 89 pickup. I remember you saying that youre from the Louisville area in a previous video. If you are looking for parts in the future/ small stuff that might be hard to find i recommend contacting this man. He has anything you could possible need and is a toyota guru. About 30 mins from louisville in indiana.I was amazed at his collection and seems to get more everytime i go there.louisville.craigslist.org/pts/d/depauw-toyota-4x-runner-and-pickup-parts/7006642714.html

Is an axle restoration worth it?

It really depends on your situation. If everything is in working condition and isn't giving you issues than probably not. But I had no idea what the history of this truck was. The oil wasn't changed regularly. The amount of build up in the cylinders was frightening. The giant hole in my frame was worrisome. Since I was tearing it down to the frame I figured I might as well give everything a going over. One of the drum brake was caked with oily brake dust which meant one of the seals was bad. So I decided it was best to rebuild the entire thing to make sure everything was good.

torque specs?
@Obscuremotorsports

Depending on the axle you're working on the manufacturer torque specs can vary. You should reference the manual or look up Fastenal's recommended torque values for the appropriate size and type of fastener. Good luck!
