I’m curious what the bracket on the back of the axle is? It has two bolts holding the bracket just to the left of the pumpkin and has a series of rods that goes to something mounted in the frame. Thanks in advance. 2:40 shows it

Hi @Nabil Imam can we pull out the axle without opening the differential?
@Obscuremotorsports2 жыл бұрын
Yes you can. There are 4 bolts that hold the bearing cup to the axle tubes. Loosen those and the axle will slide out. You should see those bolts when you take the drum off.

also where do you order your replacement parts? (im trying to find a complete rebuild kit but dont know where I should start) Thanks in advance!
@Obscuremotorsports4 жыл бұрын
I thought I responded to this. I've shopped at places like LCEperformance, lowrangeoffroad, eBay, Marlin Crawler. Not everyone has everything you'll need. You'll have to buy from different places to get everything you'll need. It's not a huge deal, just takes a bit more effort to make sure you've ordered the right parts. I think I've ordered the wrong part 3 different times, I just drop the parts in the parts bin and move on.

The oil could be brake fluid. Or it could be from the differential. Make sure you check on that little vent cap on the axle housing. I just took mine off and when it came off it went poof telling me that there was pressure in the axle housing. It will cause the oil to push past your seals and cause your brakes to be bad or weak.

how did you get that Pinion out?
@Obscuremotorsports4 жыл бұрын
How did I take that apart? I did it off camera apparently. To remove the pinion you need to hammer out the indent that holds the shaft nut in place. Once you get the indent hammered out the nut will spin with little force. After this you can wedge a piece of pine wood in-between the gears and spin the nut free with a short rachet. This bolt isn't highly torqued because it's set to meet a certain preload. So the indent on the nut locks it in place. Once you have it apart and cleaned and put back together you can watch the episode a few after this on how to set the endplay and preload. Hope this helps!

This is such an incredibly helpful and well put together video! Thanks so much for taking the time to film, edit and share it with the world! My bearings have gone in the rear diff of my 1992 Masterace Surf and the shop quoted over 2k to rebuild it. It's JDM so finding parts in Canada is tricky! Cheapest and easiest option is to swap out the rear axle assembly but i cant find a domestic vehicle that shares the same specs! Then i came across your video and may give rebuilding it myself a go! Where did you get your rebuild kit? My Axle is F252 so its not identical to yours but very similar. Thanks again for sharing and inspiring. All the best
@Obscuremotorsports4 жыл бұрын
I got mine from lceperformance or lceengineering. I've bought a few things from them and haven't had any issues. You can also find them at lowrangeoffroad or yotamasters. If you have questions about fitment I bet you could drop them an email and they will be happy to help and they are probably more knowledgeable than I am. I've also made a video putting it back together with proper preload and backlash settings. So check that out and give it a go!

WOW, you really are doing a complete restoration. What is your vision for the completed truck? Rock crawler? Stock? Now that you've done the engine and the rear differential...what's next? Great channel, love the Toyota stuff.
@Obscuremotorsports5 жыл бұрын
The vision of this truck is stock with a few modern amenities. I'm also painting it 3rd gen Tacoma orange. It will be my daily driver and in town hauling. I'll be building out a rock crawler after this project is over. What's next? Not sure whatever strikes my fancy... Maybe I'll start ripping apart the transmission and rebuilding that.

@Obscuremotorsports4 жыл бұрын
What axle did you swap? Did you rebuild them? Did some else rebuild them?
@rags-fv6ko4 жыл бұрын
It came from a 98 Tacoma 3.4 v6 I haven’t rebuilt it wonder what is causing it ..
@Obscuremotorsports4 жыл бұрын
It could be anything at this point. What have you checked? Are the tires balanced? Brake assembly balances? Did you swap prop shafts too? Is one of the universal joints bad(you can check this by pushing and pulling on the shaft in all directions. If it moves back and forth the universal joint is bad). Anything that spins can cause vibration so start a list of anything that spins and check that they are balanced. And remember, just because it was balanced on the old axles doesn't mean something didn't happen during the swap to cause them to be unbalanced. Don't rip the axle apart until you are 100% certain everything that bolts to it is balanced.

The truck is a V6. I'm going to be leaving the driveline pretty much stock with the exception of dropping in a 5 speed. If I find a need to put a limited slip in it I'll drop in it later.

What are doing with the frame? I've got an 89 that has a rotten frame. I've toyed with the idea of trying to fab one but I'm not a welder. I think your brakes are full of grease and mud.
@Obscuremotorsports5 жыл бұрын
I plan on rebuilding the back half of the frame. I'll probably be cutting it a few inches I front of the rear cab mount. Once I'm in the new shop I'll be getting a 3d scanner and digitizing the frame so I can make a jig to locate all important points. Then I'll hack it apart and start rebuilding I just gained a bit of confidence in my welds this week after putting that fixture through the press. So I don't think rebuilding the frame is going to be an issue!

Nabil Imam what type of welder are you using?
@Obscuremotorsports5 жыл бұрын
I'm using a Lincoln Squarewave 200. It's a TIG that runs off 120 or 240. It's completed every job I've asked it to do, so I'm very happy with it.
@triples4good5 жыл бұрын
Nabil Imam Is TIG better in this application than MIG?
@Obscuremotorsports5 жыл бұрын
Steve, that is a loaded question. I am by no means an expert. I'm self taught and welding is just a hobby. I've been welding for 7 years, so years of trial and error has made up for proper education. As for this application TIG or MIG will give you great results if done correctly. I bought the TIG because I like to weld aluminum too. If you're only going to weld steel, MIG is a perfectly good choice. So if you're asking if you can MIG a frame together the answer is a solid yes, but take the time to learn how to MIG correctly. If you know someone with a welder you can offer to help assist in their next project in return for some weld time. They probably won't let you weld on their project, but they might let you weld some scrap together and then beat it with a hammer and see if the welds break. I hope this answers your question. If you want to learn more about welding look the weldingtipsandtricks channel.
