Nadan MEEN POLLICHATHU | False Trevally Fish Recipes |Steamed Fish Recipe in Banana Leaf | Kerala Recipes | Lunch Recipes | Dinner Recipes
Kerala style Steamed Fish in Banana Leaf or Nadan MEEN POLLICHATHU - a traditional Kerala dish where fish coated with masala is wrapped in banana leaves and cooked. It is popularly known as Karimeen Pollichathu because traditionally they use Karimeen (Pearl Spot) fish to make this dish. You can use any variety of fish like Seer fish, Pomfret, Mackerel. Here I have used False Trevally (Soundalo in Hindi & Parava in Malayalam)
Coat & marinate the fish with spices and shallow fry. Prepare onion tomato masala separately. Fish and onion tomato masala are alternatively arranged in banana leaves, wrapped, and sealed. Traditionally it is fried again in coconut oil, but I have steamed it in a steamer for a change.
The flavor of the fish cooked in banana leaves is so delicious and lip-smacking to serve at parties/guests.
NOTES :
1. You can use big fish slices too instead of whole fish. Fish fillets also work well.
2. If you don’t get a banana leaf, use aluminum foil to wrap the fish.
3. Adjust spices according to your preference.
4. Fry time may differ slightly depending on the size of the fish.
5. In Kerala, they use coconut oil for frying fish. you can use any type of oil. But the taste of coconut oil in this dish is amazing and brings the flavor to next level.
Do surprise your family & guests with this amazing Meen Pollichathu.
Happy Cooking !
