Nadine Dorries on Tory sleaze and scandal and her church abuse

A close ally of Boris Johnson and open critic of Rishi Sunak and Kemi Badenoch, Nadine Dorries examines the current state of the Conservative Party in this week’s episode of the Political Fourcast - and she also criticises the Church of England in the wake of the John Smyth scandal.

Mrs Dorries says she was abused as a child by a vicar.
A Church of England spokesperson said: “We are truly sorry for the childhood abuse suffered by Nadine Dorries.
“We can confirm that the National Safeguarding Team has been in ongoing contact with her following her brave disclosure of this abuse by an Anglican vicar, now deceased.
“We have offered support and have left open the offer to speak further if she wants to do so. We are sorry that when the matter first came to the Church’s attention in 2015 that she did not experience the response she should have received.”
The Conservative Party was approached for comment

At the select committees she acted like an ignorant moody teenager actually swinging back and forth on her chair, and clearly without a clue as to what her role actually was. What are these core Conservative principles she values so highly? MIA for months and months. Not doing her job that she was paid to do, that comes out of our taxes. To add insult to injury, she also sponged off the state 80K to employ her daughter. But for what? Please give the “plonker” a break! 😢 Despite her many past faults, here’s a woman who feels tormented by the Church’s behaviour. Her point of view about how the Church needs to reform is valid. And her points about corruption and degeneracy in parliament sound credible. She is not the most successful or virtuous ex-politician but it would be wrong to dismiss her arguments as being without value. I hope Nads finds the strength to challenge the church - and other institutions - on their deceits and immorality.

Didn't she go into the jungle whilst a serving MP ? She is so disingenuous...also has she just worked out that hierarchy and power structures tend to be able use it to abuse or cover abuse,wow has she just worked this out.Also does she really think the Catholic church has got its house in order...still ruled by men,still highly secretive,still has many of the power structures,money etc that its always ha...not alot would have changed. Maybe in Ireland itself and deference to the church is not so common but worldwide and in the Vatican I doubt much has changed. Nadine is extremely good at critiquing power structures when they no longer serve her but very good at upholding the ones that she sees as still in her interests. When she talks out for the most dispossessed and marginalised people in our society and the world I might believe her but otherwise its mostly self interest with her.

Being perceptive on one issue doesn't negate being utterly deluded on another. She refuses to accept any criticism of Boris Johnson, repeatedly blames everyone else for his personal shortcomings, and extends this to all of the parliamentary Conservative Party because she believes they should have stood up for him. Her accounts are regularly refuted, not because they are pure fiction but because she is known to highly exaggerate anything that people tell her as some endemic problem - it's populist opportunism at its most cynical. This only muddies the water through which we can actually see the truth through people like Tim Shipman, who she seems to think has given her the stamp of approval because he acknowledged that somebody exists? Bizarre.
