I remember this game as a weekend rental that my best friend and I played through. It was fun to an extent, completing it with a friend, but beyond that it was abhorrent, and thankfully 1080 Snowboarding soon fulfilled any remaining desire for winter sports games on the N64. Still, it left something of an impact and I do distinctly remember the very nice reflections on the ice of the speed skating event as you say. Accurate review, sir.

My wife and I are among the five people who’ve been watching the Winter Olympics this year, so I decided to rewatch this review. I remember renting this game a little after it came out. And, while it was definitely quite poor, it did at least scratch that “winter sports” itch as I eagerly waited for 1080 Snowboarding to be released in the US.

Most events are really hard to do good at until after a lot of practice. This is kind of cool because it is like the real Olympics in that it takes practice to succeed.

This is why I love reading the comments on Glenn's N64 reviews because no matter how panned the game he's reviewing was at the time & likely still is, there are numerous people who grew up with said games & greatly enjoyed them & still hold fond memories of them. thats what i love about gaming. there are tons of games that got panned by everyone but i still liked them. i guess all a game needs to do is appeal to at least one person and make them enjoy it and thats a success. i don't think the studios would feel that way if they lost a load of money though hah

Pretty shocked by the review tbh! I absolutely loved this game and thought the controls were great. The downhill was a rush and although controlling the sleds was pretty subtle it made a huge difference! Just like in real life you only make minor adjustments! The curling was near perfect and a great multiplayer game. Games like this take time to master and only once you have will you really enjoy it! Feel for those who didn’t give it the time! I’ve always been a timetrialer on games like mariokart snes so it’s possibly why I loved it. Anyway love your reviews! This collection of videos is epic! I have a feeling one day the views on your games will be absolutely huge!

OK, so this game is on my list of games that I like that everyone hates. It's certainly not a GOOD game, but I enjoy it from time to time. I think it suffers the same way that "multiple event" video games often do, in that half of the events are terrible (aerial, slalom) and a few are fun (bobsled, halfpipe). I actually love ski jump and speed skating, but I'll admit I have no desire to spend an hour improving my records. Call me crazy, but I actually enjoy it a bit. Still, its probably a "once a year" game for me, but luckily my friends will humor me with it and we still have records saved from years past.

This game contains, as far as I know, the only even halfway comprehensive representation of the sport of curling on any major home console along with a multiplayer option. There have been a couple of independently-produced games of curling on the PC that look horribly independent. There have been a few mini-game and cartoony things on different handhelds and things, but with no regard for realism. But Nagano '98 is the only one where you can get a mate round, hand them a gamepad and say, "Right, let's curl!" And in saying that, this game was also released on the PSX and if you like the curling on the N64, the PSX version just has a better aiming and throwing system.

I have to disagree with you. I love the Ski Jumping (real Ski Jumping, not the trick based one), Curling, both Skiing events and the bob race. I played this one as a child with family members excessively and have very fond memories of it. The trick Ski Jumping and Ice Skating were horrible though. I'm on the fence with the half pipe Snowboarding, but it wasn't bad, just not entertaining for a long time. The only reason I stopped playing after a long period of having fun with it, was that it became too easy, at least when I was playing against computer controlled jumpers and racers. Curling was of course the best when playing against my brother although we both became so good at it, that the one starting always lost the round ; ) This game and International Superstar Soccer 98 were the games I spent the most time with on my N64... by far. I don't know why you dislike it so much, granted I haven't played it in like 10 years, but I don't remember having any kind of problems with the controls of the disciplines I mentioned liking a lot. Anyway thanks for the review and keep it up. I still disagree though ; )

I had this game as a kid and thought your review was a little harsh! :) I mean trying to condense the entire winter Olympics on a system with performance approximately equaling a potato is not an easy task!! I personally liked the range of events and thought it showed lots of ambition in its scope and had a quirky "Japanese" nature to it, far more fun than the dreary EA sports games of the time. I enjoyed the game and got many hours of play from it. It really looks terrible by modern standards though and has aged very badly indeed!
@n64glennplant11 жыл бұрын
its tough to get all of those events into the game for sure, on any system back then it was a task. the problem for me is that the controls are so bad that it ruins the game. they managed to get the events into the game but the main part was how poorly some of them handled which isn't to do with technical ability of the console its to do with poor design choice from the creators IMO :)

I got this game at that special time in my childhood when I couldn't imagine that bad games even exist: games were this magical alternate reality where everything makes sense and you can always succeed if you try hard enough. I tried playing all the events, but could not get good at any of them. Something had to be wrong, right? I had to be missing something. I looked up the game on, IDK, probably GameFAQs, and found out that this game is just made poorly, and no amount of effort will help one master it. It was only a few short years before I stopped believing in God. I don't think the two events are completely unrelated.

Ha! What a horrible little game. I remember seeing this on the shelves of my local GAME when it was released. It's the only reason I know where the 1998 Winter Olympics was held.
@n64glennplant11 жыл бұрын
haha and i bet GAME were asking like £70 for it!
@a3HeadedMonkey11 жыл бұрын
I think it was probably more around £50 in 1998, still damn expensive though. I remember when the 64 first came out though & games were around the £60-£70 mark. Lylat Wars was £70 with the rumble pack if I remember correctly.

yeah you are right! i remember turok being £70 second hand in one of my local game shops that i never used to go to because he was known for ripping off kids hah
@a3HeadedMonkey11 жыл бұрын
For a second hand game, that is pretty disgusting. We used to have a similar guy that sold games at our local market. His prices weren't that bad, but the prices he offered when buying were unbelievably low. We were desperate teenagers that needed some fags though, haha. I believe he got busted for tax evasion some years ago. SWEET JUSTICE!

haha classic! this shop owner was so bad that one time a friends dad went in there after he ripped his son off and said if he ripped off any more kids he was going to kick his head in hah

This game is so bad, that someone like AVGN should give it review

What a terrible game. Though after watching that crappy snowboard section i really feel the urge to play some 1080.
@n64glennplant11 жыл бұрын
can't go wrong with that game...one of my favs!
@HagenFlachmann11 жыл бұрын
Well yeah everyone loves that! I think its still the best snowboarding game ever released.
@n64glennplant11 жыл бұрын
yah its a shame they made avalanche too arcade like to fit in with the popularity of extreme arcade style sports games of the time
@HagenFlachmann11 жыл бұрын
Yeah its still fun though. I certainly like it more than those crappy SSX games.

@n64glennplant11 жыл бұрын
edgarschainsaw yeah the snowboarding has next to no speed until the final 10 seconds of the race!
@edgarschainsaw11 жыл бұрын
I couldn't even do the speed skating from my recollection. I don't even want to replay this abomination due to the nightmare's that are bound to follow such an experience.

yeah the rhythm is awful and you run out of energy then it throws it all crazy. so stupid
