This was me and my friends favorite N64 game. We all played high school sports and would game on this all night. We were stupid good at it. We had broken every world record by insane amounts. I think our fasted 100 yard dash was something like 9.2 or 9.3. By far the most difficult events to master were the vault and clay shooting but we eventually destroyed at that too. We would just put it on decathlon mode or whatever it was and try to get the best score over multiple events. Man is this game great if you are competitive and have lighting reflexes. We actually developed different methods of holding and using the controller to get those ridiculous scores.

my hat goes off to you, I can't imagine how much time you'd have to put in to get records on the vault and the shooting! I think I peaked at 16 because when I tried to play it recently I discovered that I'm far worse than I used to be

This game was probably designed with multiplayer in mind, because it plays exactly the same as single player. You can play with up to three other people in any event or in Championship mode, and have a great time trying to beat the records

I remember fondly playing this with my dad back then. When we finally got 1st in Championship was just pure emotion and boy the Credits OST is my favorite vgm since I was a todd and not even One-Winged Angel has dethroned it. It's a shame that you can't find that specific song in KZbin, and PS1's version is not the same, damn, is not even near to be as amazing as N64's Credits. :(

Great review as always. I picked up this game from a used bookstore over the summer because I knew it was somewhat hard to find (luckily it was the retail version too!). One good feature I liked was that the Konami code unlocked the hidden events, which I definitely needed because the confusing controls in some events made getting a gold medal hard. As for summer event games, I used to love playing World Class Track Meet for NES at my cousin's house with the Power Pad.

1:40 that British swimmer has great reaction times haha One of the first games I remember playing was an sporting event kind of game creatively called Epyx's World Games. As with all my suggestion, this earns my vote for super nostalgia: I was maybe 2 or 3 years old. Right around my first memories.

I have this as it was a full release in Japan as Go For It! Japan! Olympic 2000 N64 Edition. Interesting how it was marketed as an Olympic events game in Japan and a follow-up to the classic T&F in the US, likely to coincide with the 2000 Summer Olympics. There was even a Playstation version., too. I always thought this game had a quality feel to it even though these games have done nothing to really advance this style of game.

Hey Glenn. Pleasantly surprised to know this game existed. I've always loved Athlete Kings in Europe for the Sega Saturn and not only is there a comparable game on the N64, it's also quite good apparently. Strangely enough, it seems this game was released on every popular system at the time, even going so far as to receive a PS1 and a PS2 port, but the N64 version has by far the largest number of events at 14, with the PS1 version having 11 and the PS2 and Dreamcast version dropping the number to 10. Maybe Konami dropped these from the game fro the later ports because they weren't popular?

Man I like many others loved that first track and field game on ps1 it's so much fun and even better as a multi player. I was just having a bash at it with my non gaming misses and she loved so that must say something after all these years. Just out of curiosity I'm wondering why you spread your game play out over 16:9 do you think it looks better than 4:3 or is more excepted on KZbin? I know a few games did support 16:9 but most were dedicated to 4:3 unless I'm mistaken

I loved these games in the arcade - am old enough to remember Track & Field and Hyper Sports in the big 4 player cabinets, But for a home game, Athlete Kings (aka Decathlete) for Saturn is my favourite summer games title too. The controls are great and are a bit deeper than the old Konami games, the graphics still hold up really well, and you get to play as a comic version of Daley Thompson - what's not to like? Two player only which is a shame but it's still far better than the Dreamcast sequel even though it supports 4 players and even lets you compete against your friends' best performances as they are saved to the VMU for replay. It has less events and just doesn't feel as if it was finished.
