@@lizabetx483 I don't have a problem with gymnasts wearing legging. (These are leggings, not tights. Tights are sheer.) The part that I was responding to was the op saying that individual athletes shouldn't need their uniforms approved by anyone and should just be able to wear whatever they feel comfortable in. Part of being a competitive athlete is a uniform. The uniform is not always going to be something that every athlete likes or feels comfortable in, but if it is the uniform then they are expected to wear it. It is one thing to make exceptions for athletes who may face harm if they are seen in the approved uniform, and give them other specific uniform options. It is a completely different thing to just say that everyone should be allowed to wear whatever they like.

Had they allowed me to wear tights back in the 70s, I would have been allowed to continue gymnastics. My family was very Christian, so girls should not be showing their bum in public.

Such fun artistry with this routine!!! And I love that she can wear tights to make her feel more comfortable. That said, I do think silver would be a more appropriate color for the tights because black or very dark-colored tights/pants/unitard legs can make it difficult for judges to see split positions, handstands on bars, etc (I believe men's gymnastics had issues with this a few decades ago when pants were allowed to be colors other than white, and this has also been discussed re: the German women's unitards in international competition). Silver would coordinate nicely with her leotard but still allow the judges to see what they need to. But I'm so proud of her for trailblazing this in the NCAA!!

@@aprillyakubu Er, yes? But her legs look like, y'know, legs, instead of a super-dark, dyed, uniform fabric that doesn't reflect light at all the way skin does. That's why the German women have had people talking about this but nobody has said squat about Gabby Douglas - because skin looks like skin but really dark fabric is super hard to see in an arena.

Tights do not limit movement. However, they can be slippery if they come in contact with the bars or beam. Skin can provide traction during a slip or stumble on those events.

@@viclit101 they do. I took dance and had leotards, tights and unitards in cotton with Lycra. And yes it does make a bit more friction on beam because I did gymnastics too. My thought is to have shorts length unitards. They can still be fancy but cover more. We need like the guys have.. all sorts of options.

The German Olympic Team found a great material to use as their entire team wore long pant unitards in 2021 throughout the games. The small leos are definitely phasing out

I think that it looks better, more elegant and mature, to have the legs covered. I always think regular leotards look half-dressed and juvenile. Plus it is impractical, there is the danger of private areas being exposed in certain positions. I’m sure they have ways round that, but wouldn’t it be better to not spend time worrying at all? I also think it is unfair to have a costume that inherently forces pubic hair to be removed, especially on young girls. They already train 30+ hours a weeks, and they probably have to spend several hours pruning and preening, depending on how hairy they are and how tolerant their skin is of hair removal.

I competed as a gymnast in the late 1970’s . Back then we wore something called “trunks” under our leotards. They were panties made out of the same fabric as the leotard. Leotards were cut with far more crotch and butt coverage than the ones today. If you didn’t wear trunks and a bra and your butt or bra strap were exposed, you got deductions. Everything had better be covered. We need to bring back those rules.

As a former dancer, sprinter & gymnast-this aspect of sport SUCKED. Girls/women are obviously objectified and female athletes are no different. We obviously expose more skin than our male counterparts in the SAME SPORTS. There’s no logical reason for this. Psychologically, skimpy briefs, leotards/short shorts weighed on me as a CHILD-affecting both my confidence and performance. And I am speaking from years of experience in each of these three disciplines. Enough!! I’m so proud of her for this and I’m proud of the legacy she has begun. We female athletes shouldn’t compromise our performance for hyper sexualized dress norms.
