Means you didn't travel that much. No way Addis Ababa can win over Nairobi. Nairobi you feel like you're abroad the city looks different you will see a lot of foreigners around you. In Addis Ababa there's no that much places to enjoy except few that you can count like the Park. most building are the same design. They don't have big malls and even if you get it you can't use your credit card they will tell you there's no system. The only thing I like about Addis is the safety you can walk at mid night and no one will talk to you unlike Kenya where you got robbed.
@dudy8 ай бұрын
@@adbayou1253 tue, Addis Abeba does not have that many foreigners.. Especially for being known as the diplomatic hub of Africa.... In fact I haven´t even tried paying with card, due to the currency havoc... Unfortunately also walking at night on street... well I did in both cities... and I must say in Nairobi it improved and unfortunately in Addis it seems it became less safe (but still very ok)

I am a Kenyan married to an Ethiopian and though we've lived in the UK for the past 23 years, I have visited both cities several times and therefore can talk from an informed point of view. Addis was barely a dilapidated city 20 years ago with a small airport but within the last 15 years or so, the city just erupted into something so beautiful with sky scrappers mushrooming all over the city, then came the construction of most modern airport in Bole, new highways and then the light rail [the first of it's kind in sub Sahara Africa -only Morocco has one ] this completely reduced Nairobi's public transport to almost zero for comparison purposes. The icing on the cake for Addis is the recent developments of the Friendship Park, Entoto Park by Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed, a genius if you asked me. Nairobi on the other hand has developed so much during the past 10 years of Uhuru Kenyatta, with sky scrapers cropping up everywhere and the icing on the cake being the construction of the Nairobi Express Way. Though there are buildings in Nairobi which one would be forgiven for thinking that they have been plucked out of London, UK, it is not true to imagine that Nairobi has developed to what it is today because of colonization by the British. The British left Kenya in 1963 when there were very few buildings in Nairobi and therefore the credit of developing Nairobi to what it is today, goes to the Kenyans themselves just like in the same way we have developed our tourism sector compared to all of our neighboring countries. Definitely both Nairobi and Addis in my view, complement each other while each is beautiful in it's own unique way. I enjoy both cities equally -Addis gives me the Yode Abysinnia vibes -Ethiopian culture and food which is second to none while Nairobi gives you the ultra modern shopping malls almost equal to what we get in London or New York. Nairobi being a very cosmopolitan city and a diplomatic hub, gives you all types of international restaurants with exotic menus. That said, one area where Nairobi beats Addis is on residential areas which have not featured on the vlog so I won't elaborate further as it wouldn't be fair to those who have not seen both cities residential areas for comparison purposes. Yes, Nairobi has a few slums including the largest slum in Africa called Kibera but, the slums are contained in specific areas while slums in Addis are spread out within the city even though Addis government is clearing off most of their slums and replacing them with the sky scrappers and modern apartments plus they have an elaborate program of constructing affordable condominiums/ apartments which are housing erstwhile slum dwellers. Nairobi is currently undertaking similar projects of affordable housing but these apartments and houses are still by far superior in construction quality and materials compared to the Addis Condos in my view. We are thankful to own properties in both cities.
@dudy11 ай бұрын
Oh wow! Thank you so much for the detailed elaborate on both cities! I wish you could have showed me the both cities and make an expert comparison of all the aspects and areas! I have been to some residential areas in Nairobi, both the high and lower class like westlands or pipeline as well as kibera slum. I have made separate videos about these places. Unfortunately I had much less time to explore Addis and I did not really got to find out the kibera/ pipeline/ weslands equivalents there… as you say the slums seem to be scatteres all over. Even for the train I didnt have time to take it in Ethiopia.. When it comes to development, it seemed to me that Addis had a huge boom recently, but Nairobi has been developping steadily and rapidly for few past decades… I think they both are great cities! I really appreciate your insight and watching my video. I am very glad that you liked it 🤗

Addis Ababa is doing great but there is a reason why Nairobi is called the capital of Africa. Kenya is heavily influenced by the West because it was colonized by British, and this has contributed heavily to Nairobi's attractiveness to Western multinationals and global agencies. You can easily spot a lot of Western architecture in Nairobi that date back to colonial times. On the other hand, there seems to be a lot of new shiny buildings in Ethiopia and I attribute this to growing Chinese influence it that country.

Here in 🇪🇹 we were never colonized ,so we might not have all the shiny constructions, architectures, and the western multinationals or global agencies(like he said) ..but at least we preserved our culture, language, religion and most importantly we are not highly influenced by the western propaganda. The problem with Addis is that most of the city (80% ) is a slum. It has no playgrounds for kids to play soccer. Don’t be deceived by the main streets. The city has zero waste management system. I’m not sure if Nairobi has an edge in these areas…if so Nairobi wins.

Which Nairobi was built by the British? Can you name some of the buildings and roads constructed by the British before the independence of 1963? Additionally, of the 54 countries in Africa, 52 were colonized. Kenya (specifically Nairobi) stands out as a successful mineral-free country in the top ten list. Unlike many other countries with gold, oil, diamonds, etc., Kenya's success is noteworthy. I find it ironic that Ethiopia often takes pride in not being colonized but attributes its underdevelopment to the lack of colonization. There seems to be a misunderstanding of the dynamics of colonization; it often took more than it gave.

@addpuppets932611 ай бұрын
Let's be honest. In recent years most of the high rise buildings and roads in Addis were built by the Chinese companies. Even during the 5yrs occupation many roads and buildings were also built by the Italians. Emperor Haile Selassie made deals with foreign companies when building the national bank, black lion hospital and many other major landmarks. Even the monuments(Menilik statue etc etc) were sculpted by foreigners. So it's not fair to say Nairobi is ahead of Addis because it was colonized by the British.

Nominal GDP or PPP(purchasing power parity)GDP? There are two types. I think Ethiopia is now leading when it comes to PPP. but Kenya is still ahead in terms of per capita income. That gap is narrowing now. As far as comparing Nairobi with, Cairo and Joeburg . . . meh. I don't think so. Maybe you can compare it with cities like Abidjan, Luanda, Harare, Maputo Port Louis or Dakar. Honestly speaking even Luanda(capital city of Angola) seems a lot modern and cleaner than Nairobi. Just check out the skyline video recorded from a drone. Most of these beautiful cities of Africa were urbanized during the colonial era. They're well planned cities by Europeans unlike Addis since Ethiopia was only occupied for 5yrs but never colonized. One thing I hear from Kenyans is about the slums in the middle of the CBD of Addis which is true. Slums are all over the city.
@rang368811 ай бұрын
@@addpuppets9326 the comparison in GDP, either nominal or PPP is between Nairobi and Addis, not Kenya vs Ethiopia. In terms of major leading cities in Africa, Nairobi comes at 6th. The leading city is Johannesburg with a GDP above 250 billion US dollars, Cape Town is second, third Cairo both with GDP above 100 billion US dollars. Lagos, Durban and Nairobi follows respectively, with each a GDP above 50 billion US dollars. The cities you have mentioned like Luanda are 50 and below and Addis below 30 billion US dollars.
