Why limit to first-party only? That's such a huge waste. They don't need to bring back every character in every game, but having a healthy roster of returning and new characters each entry is still a good formula. First-party only is just an arbitrary restriction to make the game worse.

I'm not sure about first-party-only, but I think it's clear that Smash has too many characters at this point. Seriously, with almost 90 characters, the cast is just bloated. I often forget that less-popular characters like Rosalina, the Belmonts, Bayonetta, Lucas, Piranha Plant, Ridley, Meta Knight, Ryu, Lucario, and others are even in the game. So I think the only way for the franchise to move forward is for the next entry to make a ton of cuts. We're talking like 40+ characters. Maybe then with less characters to focus on, they'll be able to concentrate more on making each character unique and interesting. Imagine if Samus got a redesign to do her justice with regard to all of her games after Super Metroid. Imagine if they finally redesigned Ganondorf to not be a Captain Falcon clone. Zelda was one of the most rushed, unfinished characters in Melee and she's been almost the same ever since, imagine if they finally gave her a redesign. Imagine if they did the same for Kirby, who's been the quintessential boring, spammy, casual character for 20 years, despite having a wealth of different games and copy abilities that all have wildly different playstyles. Smash has so much untapped potential in so many of its veteran fighters who have remained largely unchanged since their conception.

I think the reason the Amiibo don’t do much of anything this time is because Samus Returns on 3DS locked an entire difficulty setting behind its unique amiibo, and people were a little pissed off by that. Guess they chose to play it safe.

It's about 10 hours if you play normally, but the game was made to be replayed and speedran. It even gives you a clear time after the credits.
