Osana Najimi literally means Childhood Friend. Its a running theme with character names, theres a character called Inaka - means countryside/ Rural Tadanos name is a play on words, "tada no hito" meaning just some guy."

8:07 Najimi doesn't seem to have any preference for what people call them, tending to say they are male or female for their own amusement or whatever is convenient but never using terms like gender fluid and such. Being a compulsive liar and almost nothing being known about them outside of school and friends means that everyone who knows them well tends to give up trying to get any serious answer. Thus, Najimi is Najimi. They presumably do have a gender identity, but whatever it is seems to be something they keep secret, perhaps for no reason other than to mess with people. Though I like the out there fan idea I heard once that they aren't even human but a personification of childhood friendship given physical form. ^_^

I'm not saying Najimi identifies as a "they", just that when its unclear it is a useful term as you'll be accurate regardless (since "they" can refer to any sentient thing). To be clear, the manga uses all sorts of terminology for Najimi. Casual friends tend to call them he or she depending on how they see Najimi, while closer friends will readily note they aren't sure what they are. Not sure how accurate it is, but I've seen fan translations where they'll switch from calling Najimi a he or a she in the same conversation.

Najimi is hilarious and at times TOO invasive into the relationship lol. But a welcome friend for Komi and perfect for her to branch out and meet others. This show is so great and it's one that really makes you root for Tadano AKA Chadano lol.

One of the thing that brought me to this serie is that everyone looks different. It doesn't have that typical anime character design with everyone feel forcefully look pretty and basically have the same face to each other. In Komi Can't Communicate everyone have different face, hair, height and body shape. Not all of them looks pretty.
