This is a really great documentary. Lately I've been obsessed with Timothy Treadwell and his tragic story. While Bittner seems to be a little more grounded in reality than Tim (and takes more common sense precautions like having bear spray and an electric fence), I still worry the same thing could happen to him. I hope I am wrong.
@bees5461

Bittner is far more knowledgeable about bear behavior than Timothy. He recognized the subtle signs of discomfort from that male bear and he even mentions that even the usual distance isn't enough when a bear is showing signs that it is not comfortable with your presence. If Bittner suffers the same fate as Timothy it will more likely be because of a sudden unexpected encounter. If you notice he is generally staying in areas where you can see any bear coming way before it arrives. Unlike Timothy, Bittner accepts the fact that some bears need and want space and he doesn't force himself on them. I rarely comment in these kind of videos, I am retired from a long career with Alaska Dept of Fish & Game. I am a biologist specializing in mammal behavior and have 45 years of field experience studying and monitoring bears as well as the other wildlife that inhabit the Katmai peninsula, which was my area of responsibility. I was drawn to respond to your comment largely because of how perceptive you obviously are in your comparison of Treadwell vs Bittner. You are correct in your assessment, there are night and day differences in Treadwell and Bittner's approach. They may seem to be doing the same thing to a casual observer, but there is nothing careless about Bittner's approach to being around these bears. And most important is his willingness to recognize they are wild, and willingness to recognize a bear that needs a heck of a lot of room. Timothy wanted the bears to adhere to his idea of what they are and his relationship to them. Bittner respects them for what they are, and he is keenly perceptive of their sometimes subtle signs of comfort or agitation and understands why you want to keep a large distance between yourself and any bear that seems the least bit nervous. Take care and enjoy bear watching, even if it's from the safety and comfort of your home. They are beautiful and fascinating animals. Best regards.

This is Katmai National Park and they are not obeying NPS rules, which makes me wonder how legitimate the so-called biologist really is. Katmai is also home to to world-famous Brooks Falls, where thousands of tourists watch bears fish the salmon run every summer. The main reason that these coastal brown bears aren't generally aggressive towards people is because they are laser focused on the salmon, which provide abundant food. Therefore this is not applicable to interior grizzlies, or bears elsewhere such as Russia. That said, this is Tim Treadwell redeaux-naming the bears, thinking they have accepted him as part of their community, etc. Foolishness.

He seems like a very nice person BUT I have a HUGE issue with someone putting themselves so close in proximity to these Apex predators, and a biologist no less !! Its clear that he has a true obsession with seeing how close he can get to these respectable predators. But as science and history dictates, people placing anthramorphic traits onto animals set themselves up for disaster . These are animals, not humans - not friends - not family. Many people in Alaska find this kind of activity to be reckless, and ultimately a huge risk to the bears. If an accident or mauling would occur , it is almost certain death sentence for that bear. Spending 6 weeks in Katmai to film is pretty amazing though- I am very glad it went well for the most part. Hopefully this footage will not have to be referenced to in retrospect ala Timothy Treadwill.

We must’ve been watching a completely different video. This guy is nothing like treadwell and out of all people on earth to be qualified to be this close to document bears a biologist would be #1 on that list. He was particularly careful around the bears and knew in what circumstances he could get close and in what circumstances it was best to back off and leave the area.
@CastleMc
@CastleMc 2 ай бұрын
@@Wibtlol Huh? He is exactly like Treadwell-naming the bears, believing they accept and care about him, saying his goal is to prove they aren't dangerous, etc. etc. And we have no idea if he is a legit biologist, just someone with an undergrad degree, or even merely self-proclaimed. His behavior is unprofessional. Treadwell was also careful around bears and at least he knew better than to cook and eat salmon in his tent-that is reckless!! It is a cardinal rule in bear country to never cook or eat within a few hundred yards of your camp, and most people eat dry food that only needs water or heat-not grilled meat, which they can smell for a mile.

Well, here I go again, commenting on Treadwell in yet another video. You are very perceptive, huge difference between Bittner and Treadwell. I am a biologist, spend my 45 year career with Alaska Fish & Game, and yes, met Treadwell a few times. Treadwell tried to force bears into behavior and relationship according to what he wanted. Bittner observes them from whatever distance the individual bears are comfortable with. He doesn't approach them, but sometimes they are so comfortable with his presence that they get close to him. This is entirely different than Treadwell's behavior as Treadwell forced himself into the bear's space. Bittner clearly recognized the male bear was showing signs of nervousness and Bittner put more space between himself and the bear, respecting that bears are wild animals and can't be forced into some kind of personal relationship. And he's not foolish enough to camp in their territory without bear spray, or electric fence. I doubt that Bittner will have the same end as Treadwell. He seemed to really take seriously the mistake he made of not having the electric fence turned on prior to getting into his tent. Leaving it off when you are sitting out in the campsite where you can see any approaching bear and then turn it on before the bear arrives at your camp is fine. But shouldn't go into your tent without making sure the electric fence is hot. But recognizing that he was lucky the sow didn't arrive at the camp along with her young probably means it's the last time he made that mistake. And I seriously doubt Bittner will ever camp at the Maze, he clearly understand it's dangerous just to visit that area, much less camp there.
@CastleMc
@CastleMc 2 ай бұрын
@@bees5461 If you watch the unedited videotapes by and of Treadwell, it is clear that he learned to watch and respond to bear behavior also. He certainly didn't just approach every bear and was cautious about bears he didn't know. He knew and said they could kill him. If your description were accurate he wouldn't have survived for 12 years. I also see many similarities between Treadwell and Bittner, who claims bears aren't necessarily dangerous and can co-exist with people, names them, and believes that they acknowledge and accept him. He also isn't following the NPS rules and regulations regarding wildlife. He is no model of behavior around bears.
@bees5461
@bees5461 2 ай бұрын
@@CastleMc I have to respectfully disagree with much of what you are saying here. First, there is a world of difference between David Bittner and Treadwell. Bittner is a fisheries biologist and conducts surveys and studies in Katmai during his time off with his job as a Fish and Game biologist in Switzerland. He is around the bears quite a bit since the salmon that are his primary interest are the bear's primary food source in Katmai. Bittner has never camped anywhere in bear country without an electric fence. Also, if you see any of his campsites, they are all out in the open where he has a 360 degree view of the surrounding area. He can see any bear approaching his campsite way before that bear ever gets close. He also leaves the area entirely when a bear starts displaying any behavior that indicates the bear is uncomfortable with his presence or is otherwise exhibiting nervous behavior. Bittner is a well educated biologist who not only knows what the rules and suggestions for how to behave in bear country, but he follows those rules and regulations and even follows suggested practice for camping and being around bears in general. I have seen video of Bittner where sometimes a bear is coming within a closer distance than what is recommended, but in every one of those cases Bittner is watching the bear closely as the bear is approaching, and will get up and leave if the bear is exhibiting any signs of possible danger. There is no remote similarity between these two men. As to whether Bittner is a "model" of how to behave around bears I would say he is not necessarily a model for someone who is not actively studying in bear country due to some of the times he is getting closer to bears than normally recommended. There is a difference between allowing an obviously docile bear to get closer than recommended and forcing yourself on the bears. I haven't ever seen any video of Bittner forcing himself on the bears, and seen plenty of him removing himself from their presence at the slightest show of discomfort. There seems to be a real respect for allowing the bears to have whatever space they need. I would be very surprised if Bittner ever suffered the same fate as Treadwell, but you never know, a person who is very careful can make a mistake, and that is all it would take. Bittner's camping style is certainly appropriate for anyone who wants to camp in that area. The one and only behavior I see with Bittner that I would not suggest is allowing bears to walk as closely as he allows them. Again, they are coming close to him, not the other way around. I would still recommend for most people if a bear is coming near you, you should back away to the recommended distance if the bear is not showing aggression. If the bear is showing any signs of aggression or nervousness then I recommend leaving the area entirely. But again, Bittner is a scientist actively conducting research and from what I have seen he is acutely attuned to the subtle and not so subtle signs the bears are displaying. As for why Treadwell was able to survive as long as he did, his behavior became more and more careless as time went by. He was not trying to pet bears from the moment he first went to Katmai. It was over time that instead of truly understanding how to read bear behavior, he seemed to convince himself the bears were his friend. It's not enough to say "I understand the bears are dangerous" if you are behaving as if they are your friend. Saying and doing are different things. If Timothy was a friend of yours, I am very sorry for your loss. I have mentioned several times here that I very much liked Timothy when I met him, I do think he meant well and I have no doubt he meant well when it came to the bears. I am not a psychologist or psychiatrist and I can't explain why he went down the path he went. But I am sorry he did. I don't say any of these things for the purpose of criticizing him, I only hope to be able to educate people about what went wrong and how to stay safe in bear country. As you pointed out yourself, it is possible to do that. And Timothy managed to do it for several months a year for 13 years. When Bittner says he believes man and bears can coexist it doesn't mean as best friends. We can coexist by giving them the space they require and by not trying to impose or expect human behavior from them.

I thought the same until i saw the camera guy eating fish in his tent...no food in tent, definitely not their fave cuisine. Clowns. Huge percentage of bear attack deaths are due to clowns eating and having food in their tents blows my mind a biologist allowed that dude to do that. Then the poor bears will get hunted and killed if it causes death or injury.

@@roberts663 This biologist uses electrical fencing around his campsite every single time he sets up a camp. His tent is NOT outside the perimeter of his electrical fence, it's inside. The grizzly gave Treadwell the same treatment that this guy is receiving right now for a while but there's always a chance there is one grizzly out there that you cannot most likely it's going to be a old male that can't maybe can't hunt anymore maybe something's wrong with them but there's always a possibility that it's going to be one out there!
