There are a lots of birds of prey where I live in North Yorkshire. We have a kestrel around at the moment. The other day I saw her take a sparrow off my guttering. She does hover but also seams to hunt along the hedge like a sparrow hawk. First time in my life I've seen a kestrel pick a sparrow off like that. I was painting the window bellow when heard the commotion.

That sounds like an amazing encounter and not something I have witnessed myself; very Sparrowhawk-y! x

@@FeathersandFurFalconryCentre I've checked and checked, looking at the dark patches on top of the wing I'm pretty sure it's Kestrel. Quite pointy at the wing tip. I do see it hovering opposite the house. Not seen sparrow hawk for a while. We have Buzzards regularly. Barn owl, tawny owl and those noisy little little owls 😁. Occasionally a red kite.

@@seanwilson471 Wow you sound very lucky to have all that bird life around you! Yes, Kestrels are the only bird of prey that truly hovers and they have nice pointy, aerodynamic wings. Maybe it is having an identity crisis!

@@FeathersandFurFalconryCentre very privileged. Owls are my favourite. Unfortunately they keep building more houses, they are getting closer and more lights. ☹️

8:40 Pretty sure that was a Merlin in the background. (Aircraft engine that is..not the bird).

Hi, i saw you having lots of owls, i'm a beginner, and i'm learning with an experienced falconeer helping me. I wanted to ask in your opinion what's a nice owl to get as first bird of prey to train. I'm getting some experience with harris hawks (the falconeer's ones) but i'm kinda into owls.
