I grow Nam Doc Mai in my South FLorida backyard. The sample in your video appears to be passed its prime level of maturity. At that stage, they lack any acidity and are pure sugar. If you have the opportunity to harvest them a bit earlier, when they start turning color, they are delicious. Keitt and Tommy Atkins are also grown in South Florida (I believe they originated here). The Tommy Atkins is a very "run of the mill" commercial variety with a long shelf life and trees are very productive. Aside from that, they are not very good. Keitt is good, a very late producing tree, very productive and the fruit is normally really big, often up to 5 lbs and even heavier.

Thanks Jorge. Yes that is correct, Keitt and Tommy Atkins have their origins in Florida, like many other mango varieties. Nam Doc Mai seems to be available throughout the year, so it’s easy to get a larger sample size and try it at different stages of ripeness, although other factors may also affect the taste, like region, climate, soil, fertilizers, or maturity of the fruit at picking.

The small Mangoes win taste test after taste test. But I have had large ones from Sinaloa that were perfect in flavor.

hi,we grow all three(plus 14-15 other varieties) here on our small farm "finca Memè" on la gomera canary islands.most commercial ones usually not the best tasting as they were chosen for shelf life or size.that tommy atkin looks like it was frozen or kept in cold a long time.drop by if ever in the neighbourhood and try some tree ripened mangoes, saludos.

Hi there, yes the most common commercial varieties have to grow on trees that consistently produce large quantities of fruit, and that these remain sellable for a long time. Thanks for the invite to your farm, I’d love to see it! If i am around I’ll let you know.

That Tommy is bad, in all senses of the word, what youmbought is bad, and Tommy is a mango that hardly deserves the name, it is such a boring mango.
