Today, Craig and Celeste taste a Florida grown Tommy Atkins mango we picked up down on Pine Island/Bokeelia Island.
We will be tasting both mangos grown at our own farm on the west coast of Florida and from other Florida farms (mainly on the east coast). Mangos taste different when grown in different conditions and when picked at different times/ripened differently. Our opinions of a particular mango are just that - opinions on one specific mango, off of a specific tree, growing in a a specific location. We are not evaluating a variety in general and by no means intend to offend anyone by our less than stellar review of what might be your favorite mango.
Sulcata Grove is our 2 acre, backyard food forest. We grow over 60 varieties of bananas along with many fruit trees. Our videos are family friendly.

Yes finally a tommy! I've had tommy atkins with very little fibre. I agree a nicely ripened tommy isn't bad- just has a bad reputation. I've never had so much fibre as you describe... that's odd. Anyway poor tommy atkins🙁

I never buy it at the regular conglomerate store, it has very little flesh, mostly seed and taste is a one. It is not as big as the one you have there, usually 1/2 to 3/4 of that size. Tommy Atkins is essentially for the people who will eat 1 or 2 mangos a year which is the general public so its color or aesthetics and availability make it easy to sell. I usually buy the manilla mango(small yellow) mangoes, mostly available only for a couple of weeks in June. It has even smaller flesh but it is a lot smoother. We usually go to the Asian markets here in Phoenix, they'll have the Kent which usually is the best (not much selection) around here. If we go to California, you won't find much choices there either except possibly at some Asian specialty fruit stores.

Are you sure you got a ripe one? "Kinda Bland" isn't a fair Taste. Maybe you should try the "Tommy Atkins Mango grown in Guatemala. I am not a "Mango Expert" but The Tommy Atkins Mango I've tried from Guatemala, are the best tasting mangos, I've ever eaten. (Perhaps, the one you picked wasn't ripe yet.

2022 July. The Tommy Mangos from the grocery store this year have been TERRIBLE. Even at Walmart in Largo FL two humongous cases (over 500 lbs) are not touched. Terrible

The main problem with TA, is that, it is not a very flavorful mango to begin with, so imagine, picking that mango mature green, then cooking it for thermal treatment requirements, packing it in a refrigerated truck, for export. you lose most the little flavor it had to start with. that is what many people get to try as their first mango. I have purchased a few from stores in the US just to take a "gamble" and after one bite I have tossed them in the garbage. I have had TA ripened on the tree, and they are just mediocre at best. given the dozens of top tier superior varieties available, why would anyone want to plant this in their backyard? if you like fiber, I'd rather have a Haden, or Madam Francis, at least they have flavor and taste great. Another problem with TA, is that the consumer takes a look at its beautiful colors and thinks its ripe. so it's no surprise to me that some people say they hate mango, when all they have tried was a cooked, under ripe, fibrous Tommy Atkins. Anyway, commercially Keitt is replacing Tommy on farms now. it is productive, and ripens well picked mature green, only problem with Kiett, is they are not a pretty as Tommy, but have the advantage of being late season, which means that by inducing flowering, a farmer can make them any season they want. early, mid, or late !

Why on earth would you ship this to Canada unless you are into bitter this is a extremely disappointing experience. I was worried it had to much pesticides. I will eat the rest of the box but in the future I will be conscious of the type of mangos I purchase. I love mangoes just not this variety. Namaste
