I love how from a story/lore perspective, Sulyvahn could easily be considered the main villain of this game (especially if he really is the scholar who convinced Prince Lothric to abandon his duty, as some theories believe), yet he dies like halfway through the game. And at the time you fight him, you don't even realize that he's responsible for so much shit. I love these games' roundabout and ambiguous storytelling. It's so unusual and refreshing, even if it is often confusing as hell

Then there's the additional theory stuff with the Profaned Flame and Yhorm (if you believe that) and the fact he was originally going to be the final boss and not fought where he was.

@@WalkerOfTheWastes He conquers one kingdom (Irithyll), deposed and murders the sick king of said kingdom with the help of another person, and the first half of the game is you killing two of his men, farron’s undead legion, carving your way through lothric, carving your way through the cathedral of the deep who is technically not under pontiff, it’s an ally of him, then carving your way through the Carthus catacombs and the demon ruins. In total most of the « first half » of the game is spent not fighting Pontiff’s forces, or even Pontiff and his allies/subordinates which we can suppose Aldrich is. We’ve got no clue what the exact relation between Lothric and Irithyll is, but even if they are alive it’d still only be lothric+cathedral of the deep+Irithyll (including Anor Londo and the dungeon), leaving crucifixion road, farron keep, Carthus catacombs, the demon ruins, and the profaned capital as levels who don’t belong to him. I don’t believe the additional theory stuff with the profaned flame and Yhorm, but that may just be because I don’t know what it is, but the game is explicit on the fact that Pontiff didn’t create the profaned flame anyway, so if the theory is that he created it then no I don’t believe that. As for him having originally the role of final boss... I mean yes, and ? That’s not the case in the final game, in the final game Pontiff only opposés you in two instances at best, the instance of you trying to kill Aldrich and the instance of you trying to kill prince lothric. That still doesn’t make him the main villain of DS3, not unless you could also prove that he was the guy that convinced Lothric to not link the fire, at a minimum, and even then I’m not sure I would agree.

Most bosses you face, you are either the instigator and kill them because they're in your way or get ambushed by them and kill them in self defense. Usually these bosses aren't really doing anything, they're neutral and minding their own business. Pontiff Sulyvahn isn't like that, he spread his influence across the entirety of Ithryll and you feel his influence in two separate boss fights as well as with every outrider knight. Sulyvahn is one of the few characters with is own agenda and who actively does stuff actively to achieve his goals. The only characters with close influence through their actions, passive or active are probably Kaathe, Wolnir, Manus and the Witch of Izalith and the only person with greater influence is Gwyn himself imo.

My favorite part about these boss fights is that they don't know the other's moveset. They give no regard to blocking or dodging. All their energy goes straight into destroying the enemy. Balls to the wall attacks. The player has to have amazing skill and knowledge of them to realistically beat them, while these monsters hack, slash, and crush anything in their path. Haha, the Nameless King delivers some much deserved justice to his brother's killer. What makes Sulyvahn difficult for us players is that poise is non-existent in DS3. As such, getting caught in Sulyvahn's combos can halt our attacks and be deadly. Not only that, but his quick movements and the clone's presence adds extra pressure and can make it difficult to read Sulyvahn's movements (I know my eyes water when fighting him). As a boss, the Nameless King has much higher poise and can read Sulyvahn's movements easily, so even if he has less health than Sulyvahn, he can tank the hits and his attacks miss less frequently while Sulvyahn's AI has him dashing about the place, missing some important hits. Finally, the clone mechanic leaves Sulvyahn open for several seconds, makes him more passive, and the clone cannot last long enough to do meaningful damage. Ultimately, this makes the Nameless King an ideal fighter against Sulyvahn, since he negates most of Sulyvahn's advantages and makes use of his own strengths, while Sulyvahn is hindered by his own AI.

In Lore, the Pontiff underestimates his opponent, thinking he could be easy just like Gwyndolin. He didn't know his brother was a pissed God of War who return to deliver divine justice towards him and Aldrich.

Sulyvahn doesn't want to kill the gods. He is a pontiff, which means his power derives from the god he speaks in the name of. His plan was to have Gwyndolin imprisoned in the cathedral forever, and to rule "on his name". But then Aldritch came back to Irithyll with his new faith of the deep, killed the pontiff knights (that's why they and their weapons are eaten by the deep's bugs), and vored Gwyndolin.

Anhri says Aldritch's home is Irithyll, which is ruled by Sulyvahn, and you need a doll to pass through the barrier. "the Pontiff Sulyvahn gave this doll to valued subjects, so that they might use it to cross the barrier when they return home." He sent Aldritch to the cathedral and gave him a doll in case he needed him to return. It's what the description says, not that he put it in Aldritch's coffin. "And we already know Pontiff is working with the heretical Deacons" The pontiff knights were devoured by deep insects, Dorhys is locked up and watched over by a knight, and the guy leading Aldritch's covenant is dead, hidden away and guarded by 2 Sulyvahn beasts, which have killed someone carrying deep dregs, meaning someone from the covenant. Also, the courtyard right after Pontiff is filled with dead giants and corpses with embers, implying the fire-throwing deacons have killed them. Finally, Sulyvahn is a Pontiff, meaning he derives his authority from the god he supposedly talks in the name of. If the god is devoured, Sulyvahn loses his authority. Devouring Gwyndolin goes against Sulyvahn's interests, and explains why his knights were killed and why he is retaliating. The deacons are no longer working for the pontiff. They have taken over Irithyll, and Sulyvahn was trying to reclaim it when you arrived. If we put all the pieces together we get: Irithyll was a city founded (or refounded) by Gwyndolin and populated by nobles with some amount of blood from the gods (Irithyllian preset face). Sulyvahn comes in, becomes acquainted with Gwyndolin, and eventually declares himself pontiff right after Gwyndolin mysteriously falls ill, meaning he rules in the name of the god. He eventually sends Aldritch, a subordinate cleric, to the Cathedral of the Deep for his cannibalism, as stated by Hawkwood, with the intention of having him eventually return, since he is given a doll to pass through the barrier. As far as we know, Aldritch arriving at the Cathedral is what corrupts the Deep (no other event is mentioned), and he is eventually forced to link the fire, since we know he didn't do it out of heroism. Before being awoken by the bell, he foresees an Age of deep waters. Then Aldritch, his evangelists, and his deacons march into Irithyll using their bug miracles to decimate Sulyvahn's forces, as stated by the pontiff knights weapons' descriptions. Their obvious purpose was to get to Gwyndolin, who the original Japanese description of Sulyvahn specifies was imprisoned in the Anor Londo cathedral and then, later, devoured by Aldritch, which implies he wasn't imprisoned for the purpose of being fed to Aldricth.
